has to meet:
1) bus powered with lowest possible current drain

I always thought the Alesis core 1 looked great, probably one of the lowest priced items to meet your requirements.

  • just a hint regarding power consumption:
your powerbank provides 5V according to USB standard.
Most audio componentes work at a much higher voltage up to 15V, which means that an upstepping conversion is required.
Since parts have to be cheap and such gear is supposed to be powered by either USB lines or a dedicated PSU in most cases, the conversion/regulation may not be very efficient.
It's a general problem with mobile gear that wasn't designed for 'mobile use' in the first place.

  • Just get a bigger power Bank?

It kinda fails 1). It's not bus powered on iOS and using a battery bank it can drain pretty fast. But yeah. I second the Audiohub.

I would also vote for the Core 1. I've bought it for less than 50€ and it came with a coupon-code for Cubase-Elements about 50% reduced. It is made mostly out of aluminium and feels very solid. The preamp seems ok for the price. It has one input, no phantom power but a switch for line/guitar. Apart of this only input and headphone-gain. The headphone out os the only output - so not ideal for expensive symmetrical monitor-connection. But it works rock solid and I'm using it every day since a year or so.

Another good gear would be the Sonic Port VX - I gave it to my father as a birthday present. He's a musician and very satisfied with it. I think the power drain should be less as the with an usb-interface, cause it can be connected directly to the lightning-port. Beyond this it should work as a normal usb-interface, connected to a mac or such. The great thing about this device is: it has 2 symetrical outs, 1 headphone out - adjustable, one mono and a stereo mic integrated - with surprisingly good quality - but the really great thing about it is, that it can power your i-device while connected to you phone/ipad with an additional micro-usb input. Great device.

edit: of course it has an input for guitar-cable and on top of that an aux-in for line level signals - but not simultaneously usable - one or the other. But i think it is possible to record a connected guitar and mono mic onto a stereo track. One side mic, the other guitar/bass - not 100% sure about this.

  • I know IK's not the best 'feeling' product, but this new product seems to pack a lot in.
I think overall the market is definately lacking in dedicatied ios devices/controlers.
    Good luck

i was excited about this but the price seems a little too much for a software bundle i don't care at all about...
so i try to build this with bits and pieces i already have (ckk lightning usb3, usb hub, keyboard and powerbank).

how do you manage to stay clear from breaking the usb connector every time you change the headphone volume?
this design flaw made me stay away from it as i fear to break the usb connector while changing volume...

That's a neat suggestion I had not seen before. However, I'm not sure what appreciable advantage that would have over my Behringer UCA202 - it has all of the above with the exception of the instrument cable input, which I remedy with a 1/4" TS to RCA adapter. Works great guitar signal out of a Tech21 direct box or my cab sim box (Digitech CabDryVR). 16-bit, though, if you care.

  • that's correct, it needs something in front of it (DI or pedal) as an impedance converter.
(unless your guitar has an active circuit onboard)

The headphone-output regulator is above the headphone-output. So it is easy to stay away from the usb-connector, while adjusting it, which is under the input-volume regulator. The input volume stays with my device mostly at maximum, I'm touching it not often, cause my passive pickup delivers very little signal.

The headphone out feels quit sturdy and touching it can easily avoided with a little care.

It's a very compact device - due to this regulators, in's and out's are a little cramped together - but all is well till today. I doubt there are many good alternatives in this price-range, but don't know if there is something even better and cheaper.

I can absolutely recommend this device for what it does, feels and the look is also nice. I think power consumption should be also quit low. I can connect it to my cck3 without a powered hub.

  • yes, they use a codec (PCM 2902) that signals 100mA as requirement over USB.
(some other codecs request 500 mA)

Cheap as chips, just works and Mr Haq uses one ... good enough for me!

  • Yeah I wanna get another one to send audio from iPad to iPhone while doing a video. Right now my line6 sonic port Vox works great but it uses up the lightning port.

  • edited September 2017

If you can overlook the lack of the volume knob line 6 sonic port is veeery good and super portable. I have the original version and have it fixed to my Impaktor trigger. Close to no power draw.

    There's also Zoom u24.

NB I had an interference buzz coming out of uca 222 at times.

    and no instrument in...

  • the UCA is a simple implementation of the manufacturer's reference design for the PCM 2902 codec. The headphone out is it's weak point, can't drive low impedances well.
(there are mods online, in case you're technically interested)
