Cliff edge - iPad Air 2 to pro upgrade with ios11 around the corner
So I'm thinking of getting the new iPad Pro 10.5 that currently ships with iOS 10 which largely seems ok for music making.
The question is whether IOS 11 will be up to scratch upon release? If not wouldn't it be wiser to buy a 10.2 now rather than getting it after iOS 11 has come out and finding that previous app configurations in AB2, 3 or AUM are no longer working without a problem.
It looks to me like selling one of my air 2's and getting a new pro 10.2 now might be the best move. I normally don't update iOS until at least 4 months after release.
What says you?

I'd expect this generation of iPad Pro to always ship with iOS10, that is how it has been in the past I think. Not much time pressure then ...
If you are buying direct from Apple, yes good plan. In the coming weeks their stock will be replaced with devices that ship with iOS 11. I would guess within two weeks to be safe.
Personally I'm updating my main device to iOS 11 on day 1. I tested iOS 11 enough on an old mini retina to see there is no catastrophic problems with audio in iOS 11. Audiobus 3 works fine.
The one hesitation I have with the new iPad Pro is the variable video frame rate. If I were in your shoes, I would spend some time researching that. I heard it may present some issues with a music session (which needs to stay rock solid on the frame rate you select).
How about Audiobus 2?
Yeah I am sort of in a wierd spot of wanting/needing to upgrade for size alone
Running Air1(14gig) and Air2(56) and iPhone7plus or whatever the fuck it is called that has (12_ something)
The apps have gotten so large and keep growing along with my own stuff I am on the same precipice of pre purchase self negotiating and information consumption.
I also have the internal dialogue regarding the headphone jack that I really need.
I would like to get an older 10.5-inch iPad Pro with the headphone jack and 100+ gigs storage. The processing is all the same to me on these devices really. I can't tell a diff between Air1 and 2 on ANYTHING. In fact the Air 1 sometimes seems better to me.
So the other dilemma is I have a shot out PC and would like a MAC.
So do I keep current ios devices and get a MAC to supplement music making or GET IPAD PRO with Headphone jack and a new PC?
I cant help you because I can't help myself.
I feel like it may just be easier to use Ableton more since I find that the ios device DAWs merely emulate it or other DAWs.
I would just then have iPads for more controllers and individual instruments.
Air 1 for (non MIDI centric apps) Samplr and other touch ro portrait apps
Air 2 for synths and drums
iPhone (make music on the toilet and at red lights or use a mic)
I don't fuckin know.
I just made the jump from Air 2 to Pro 10.5. Have kept the Air 2. Couldn't be happier. Mine are always hooked up to an ICA4+ interface, haven't had any trouble with latency. I'm also on iOS11 beta, no problems on recent betas - it's a massive upgrade over iOS10 for iPad. Not tested everything though, and it's a massive quality of life upgrade over Air 2 with iOS10. Jump in!
Do you guys think iOS11 will render an air2 unusable or considerably slower? I'm very reticent with upgrading, because I suspect apple includes statements in their code like "if device age > 2 years then wait 10.000 ms"...
@supadom Buy.
@supadom Buy it now so you're sure you get ios 10
@pedro Almost no matter the use case, i recommend waiting with OS upgrades and check for user feedback. Surely someone else will upgrade their Air 2 so you wont have to risk it
Ha did i ever mention I'm completely washed out money wise? Got myself into a massive house refurb and I've been at it for the last 6 months. Fortunately a neighbour asked me to build a porch for him. That's where my pro 10. 2 is!
The barter economy at its best. I'm all in favour....
My Air 1 is showing its age and Best Buy had a good sale so I jumped on a 10.5 pro with iOS 10.x. ( I don't receive it till this afternoon.) I figure I will update to iOS 11 once the dust settles.
Ah, I've been calling it 10.2 but it actually is 10.5. All the better but from now on for me it is nothing but a lil bastard.
The temptation is there for me with a small work bonus. Does the 10.5 have the same problems the 12.9 does? Or is it pretty stable?
Good thread. I have also been thinking of upgrading my iPad Air 1 to the new Pro 10.5. Going with a 512gb one, that runs right at a grand.
I have a 2014 macbook pro and have thought about getting the full Ableton suite since I just recently got Komplete 11. I use Logic Pro X but find a better workflow in Ableton, especially with my iConnect and iPad and Ableton Link. Everything just syncs and plays nicely.
so my predicament is going iPad Pro 10.5 or getting a push 2 with ableton standard. My air 1 still has a lot of life in it.
Id love to see what happens speed wise , but I'm definitely going to wait and see what the verdict is before updating my Air2, my Ipad 2 is slow as molasses under 9.3.5
@pedro
I don't think Apple sabotage their older devices. They don't need to. Software written for more powerful machines will inevitably be harder to run on the less powerful ones.
They should stop the ability to update as soon as they see that an older device suffers but then there would be user backlash if they couldn't access whatever new features the new ios brings.
Lose - lose situation unless you own a reasonably new device which of course plays into manufacturer's hands.
