Thank your gods for electricity!

26 hours without electricity, but now it is back! Thanks a lot, Irma.
I swear, if I were a young maiden, I would have given myself to the power company workers out of sheer gratitude.
The past day's deprivations have me wondering about what kind of twisted individuals go to Colonial Williamsburg as some idea of a fun vacation spot. "Oh look, a butter churn!" To each his own, but it's not for me, man.

  • I hear ya! Power flickering all day long here on the coast of South Carolina yesterday. I Kept my thermoses full of ht coffee and my devices charged just in case, but we never lost it for more than a few minutes. Welcome back to the 21st C.

Athens, GA here. I spent a large portion of yesterday evening sitting in my car reading by the dome light, and charging my devices and vaping gear with the cigarette lighter. Glad you made it through safe and sound.

  • Naples resident here. Fled last minute to Orlando.

According to FPL (electric co), Naples will have electric back by the 22nd. It is the 12th.

The entire electric and water infrastructure in Naples is really badly damaged. Most will not have water or power this week.

Having lived through 10 days without electricity for an ice storm and 9 without for Sandy in NJ, I know that it is a better idea to stay away. I also know this is FAR worse, and disease will spread if the water infrastructure is as bad as they say it is.

I fled at the last second with my wife and kids. Each of us picked one thing to save and put in the car. I picked my iPad, but can't find the inspiration to do anything with it musically. I hope I hear (since I live near a major road and gas stations) that the electric comes back on soon, and maybe we return to something resembling normal.

  • Ouch, sorry to hear it, guys! Glad everyone is safe, though...

Glad that you and yours made it out okay. I have run into several FLA residents who have come up here ahead of the damage. Stay safe.

Brother I'm happy you're safe. My aunt has a condominium in Naples and she's all upset at the damage, but she was in Iowa during landfall and everyone's trying to tell her "To hell with it, you're safe, you're alive". But I get it, it's very frustrating with natural disasters because you can't do anything but get out of the way...

    Sincerely, all the best man.

  • I came on here to make a flippant observation about how ridiculously panicked I get when there is a brief power cut here in London, so this has been a sobering thread to read. It puts my 1st world worries into perspective, my heart goes out to all those affected, especially those in the path. I'm not particularly religious but God bless and protect you all <3

Thank you all for the kind thoughts. I'm glad I watched the eye of the storm pass over my house on TV. When the Cat 1 finally got to our hotel in Orlando, it was quite a night with all the tornado warnings and howling outside, but bunkering down in a bathroom with your scared kids for 24 hours during a Cat 4 is something I realized I never wanted to experience at the last second, so we threw crap in our car and got the hell out.

I realized this as I was out sandbagging the doors. I saw a couple kids the same age as mine ARRIVING to ride out the storm with grandma in their pajamas, and it hit me that I am not going to see them alive again. When I came back in the house I said "ok, change of plan" and was out in an hour. I hope they are ok. I think the mental damage Sandy and the 'ice storm with no name' did made me think "this will make those pale in comparison if I stay." People, pack a "Go" bag from now on. You never know. I'm gonna hook mine up more than ever after this.

    Edit: To add on...

Waterproof backpack, first aid supplies, a week of regular medicines, wet gear, flashlights, crank radio wth chargers, batteries, a solar charger, a bit of food and a lifestraw + water. Cleaning up supplies: soap, toweI. Added some camping gear.... you may realize how important a can opener is when all you have is cans. Or a spoon.

Always a good towel. Hitchhiker's Guide taught me that.

  • I hope you are all well. We lived for a few days without power during Sandy but other than the power module on our furnace blowing when the power came back on, no damage. I have friends who are still severely affected by the damage from Sandy (human damage afterwards by scamming contractors may be even worse), so I knew we were very lucky.

Glad you are safe and I hope that life returns to some normalcy soon.

  • @FlightManual My Mom has been talking with my Aunt (has a condo in Naples, see above post) so I don't know anything really about the hit & the aftermath. But if I can ask, is there anyway to find out if your house/area is okay or do you just ride out the power outrage & water treatment phase in Orlando for a few weeks and THEN go down to survey the situation?

I mean you mentioned that one family riding it out, with kids (!)...I hope their good. I just feel for everyone down there, it just brings it to the forefront when a fellow musician brethren is going through it, especially on the forum many of us frequent daily.

There are OT threads, but then there are threads that should appeal to our collective humanity... which should by proxy influence our music through the positive vibes. @FlightManual is proof that all of our first world problems are bullshit. All the best to you & the family.
