that wouldn't make much sense as (unless step speed is total slo-mo) there's just not enough time available for any reasonable movement ;)

That's also what was initially confusing me as well. When I think of recorded automation, I'm thinking of turning the automation recording of Logic Pro, or Auria Pro, or Borderlands, etc. moving my parameters around, and having those fluid changes recorded and played back. This is really different. Maybe it should be another term other than "recording automation", but I can also see how that's also correct.

In any case, all I had to do was make all of the samples the same so that I could clearly see/hear what was going on. Initially, I was trying to keep in uncomplicated by only having one sample to observe the "automation", and as you can imagine, with only one sample it's very hard to see/hear what's actually going on.

At the end of the day though, this is one freakin' fun, useful, and productive app. So glad I took a chance on it. :)

  • Global clear or init?
How to reset an individual step?

  • It seems that global clear doesn't clear the individual fx settings but only the samples .
Therefore loading an Init file is a better way to return to a neutral state.
Apart from muting or recording over a step, I haven't found a way to reset an individual step.
Please correct me if wrong, I've only had a short time with this app.

  • Global FX reset would be handy, preserving the samples.

Lots of immediate gratification fun tho.

When you are holding an automation record knob, Werkbench sets each step to whatever level the automation knob is at when the sequencer plays that step. The 'automation' is across a sequence. Try copying a sound to all the steps (or just fill up the sequence with different sounds) now run the loop and play with the automation record. You'll hear that each step gets changed and see that the knob on each step updates its position.

Ok, I did what you suggested and filled all the steps with the same sound. That clarified it perfectly for me. Thanks! I was expecting there to be automation on just one step that I'd selected or something, but now a see/hear how it works.

And, by the way... that issue with transport controls in AudioBus 2 not working on a 10.5 iPad, were fixed with your WB3 update. All good. Great app!

I haven't got the automation thing yet, confused.com

This is good feedback. I need to find the proper way to explain it because the mechanic is quite simple really.

    Here is a verbose overview:

Basically if you are in any one of the 10 step editing modes (Level, pan, attack, decay, high pass, low pass, pitch, crunch, echo, reverb) all of the steps become knobs that will edit the value of that parameter for that step in particular.

The randomize and automation record really just affect the positions of those knobs. You could adjust each knob manually or tap the random button to scatter them all a bit.

So with the automation record mode (accessed by pressing the record button between the randomize buttons), you get two little blue knobs where the randomization buttons were. If you are touching one or both them and the sequencer is running, as each step gets triggered it pulls the value from the automation record knob that you're pressing rather than its own dedicated knob. It then overwrites the value of its own knob to the new value that came from the automation record knob.

The effect is that you can 'play' each parameter and leave behind a trail of values that will be there once you let go of the parameter record knob. If you keep holding it, it will over write the values on the next pass.

    Does that help?

Thanks for the explanation, I'll have a run through later, thanks to @skiphunt too.

There is a big fun element with this app, so I reckon I'll record a few jam things into AUM tonight.

  • I reckon the filters really help with the sound quality. I prefer to use found sound with an app like this and the thin sound quality of the raw sounds gets to me after a while. With the filter control I can work around it!

Another way to allow for more syncopation would be to allow for the two step sequencers to be offset by 1/2 step. The funkiness that would ensue!

+1 on the 1/2 step. I think he's been working on a nudge feature but hasn't been happy with the results., Maybe instead of a full range knob in fancy controls, it could snap between half/third/quarter stops? Or just a 1/2 toggle. KISS.

  • Sorry I wasn't clear :)

Is there a global clear button? If so, where?
    ;)

I think even just a KISS solution like a 1/2 toggle would have a huge impact. I'll take whatever I can get to loosen up the 16 step sequencer (the swing doesn't seem to have much swing).

To clear everything? At the bottom to the left and right of the main link between the two sequencers.

  • This is great- all these instructions- I could not understand the first one- and gave up on it- I thought it was just me. I will check it out again. All apps should come with a clear manual.

You have to click it twice, btw, and it doesn't clear automation. Good idea to make an init file.

Well bust my britches. They must be the buttons with the word clear written on them! :) :| :#

    Thanks @lukesleepwalker

In your defense, those clear buttons are quite small!

  • How is it that I never heard of this app!? Wow it looks like a blast.

  • I want the promised iphone/ universal version (that never came)

  • Very psyched to hear work is moving forward on this mad bastard. Very good.

  • I’ve got a newfound love for this — a happy accident machine when you use on the fly parameter recording feature for your entire chained sequence.

Maybe I’m confused by the terminology meaning - but doesn’t it already have a parameter locks? can change level, attack, decay, reverb, echo, High/low filter, pitch, and crunch on a per step basis.

you are correct, forgive me I was on autopilot lol

  • I still want the original graphics back :)

  • A Poly 2 style AU revision would make it very useful :)

    Sentimental fool :)

  • This app is tremendous fun. I recorded some vocal stuff, sent it off to audioshare, opened it up in Egoist and was messing around in no time. Great flow that! This may be my answer to easily get live percussion and vocal loops in some of my silly music.

I have no suggestions at this point for the new version but really look forward to seeing how it develops.

True, But as I sit in my cabin on the Nautilus

Is so much more in keeping than it looks now.

Ps all my samples are secreted in my cryptex
