How come old refurbished ipads cost more or the same as the 2017 ipad?

...and with less storage space too!
https://www.apple.com/shop/browse/home/specialdeals/ipad

For the 2017 ipad, I cannot decide on what to spend the extra $100 on...the extra 96GB or the Apple Care. I hadn't realized coverage dropped from 3 years down to 2 years. Plus you're still subject to a $49 service fee.

  • I have had five devices since 2011 and never bought or needed apple care. I only insure the big things, people, homes, vehicles etc.

The 2017 iPad is a budget model with some corners cut to get the price down. The main thing is the display, which is inferior to the iPad Air 1/2.

Just the air 2 perhaps? I have the air 1 and it does not have the anti glare screen of the air 2 either . Not a deal breaker by any means for me.

You’re right. I thought the Air was laminated too, but it wasn’t.

I use the air1 and air2, barely notice any difference in the screens.

  • Because they're vintage, man! The tone!!!

Not AppleCare but SquareTrade story - an idiot pulls out in front of me, I jam the breaks, water bottle flys out of the console straight into the bag carrying my iPad, instant screen death. Had a brand new one 4 days later. The 99+49 thing was way better then another 800...

Ack, drinking and driving! Dangerous. Yah I may regret it one day but I have saved $750 thus far, so enough to justify just buying a new one if I need too.

My recent experience of Apple Care, for a faulty two month old iPad Pro was unsatisfactory. Just get the extra storage, if you feel like gambling.
