Sceen recording in IOS11

Ok, so while its off to a great start , there's a few things Id love to see in the future, I found out that some audio apps produced sound and some didnt when I did a screen recording. I made a 15 minute video testing a LOT of them, but the audio fell so far out of sync with the video it became hard to tell which ones where producing audio after a few minutes. Ill try them out again and make shorter videos but theres definitely an issue with some and there should be a list ( hint ) as to which ones work well and which ones dont. Ill work on one but feel free if anyone ran across one that didnt produce sound. I also plugged in the Iphone apple headset to see if I could hear myself speak in the screen recording, nope. I also plugged in an Apogee mic , ran it thru Audioshare and got no sound. Ill try it again thru some Daws and see what happens.

Now what Id like to see in a future update , is to see where we touch on the screen, which would be extra helpful for making tutorials etc. Lumafusion has an option to "show touches", that would be great if screen recording could have an option to show touches, but I dont see any option for screen recording in the system settings.

Anyway Id love to hear feedback and experiences with the screen recording feature in IOS11. What works and what doesnt work for you guys?

  • I've been trying screen recording— it's a lot of fun. Unfortunately for me audio didn't work with Elastic Drums when I was testing with Elastic Drums + synthQ together. I haven't tried Elastic Drums by itself however.

Here's one video I recorded this morning (with just synthQ):

  • I haven't yet updated to 11, so haven't seen or read much about the new features. I did notice in another video that it says "recording (time)" with a blue line at the top of the screen when recording. Yours doesn't have that. Did you edit it, or is there a setting to remove that indicator? Imagine this feature will be huge for those making device tutorials, etc.

  • From what I have tried so far it appears that it only records the audio from the app that is on screen while recording.

For example, I bring up AUM and load a multi channel setup of synths I am layering out to a single mix bus. Then I switch to TC-Data to perform. When TC-Data is the focus during screen record, no audio is recorded  .
If I screen record that same multi in AUM with AUM on screen using its keyboard I get sound in the recording.

I really hope in the future that this screen recorder will allow you to select an audio source besides the microphone or the app currently on screen.

Annoying indeed, I guess it's beyond hope that Apple have made low level bits of this part of the SDK so others can produce something a little more sophisticated?

A step in right direction though, sounds OK for producing simple single app demos (voiceover or whatever would need to be recorded seperately though).

Well, nice show.. where have you been hiding this gem (SynthQ).. well it’s going to be mines tonight... Did I read correct.... Midi-out too?

  • ok, so I just figured out something with screen recording and Beatmaker 3, If you start screen recording before you launch Beatmaker 3, you wont get any sound in the video, if you launch Beatmaker 3 before you start screen recording, you get sound in the video.
I started screen recording before I launched Korgs IMono/Poly and still got sound in the video, then I launched other Korg synths without stopping and restarting screen recording, the more apps I launched, the more the sound went out of sync, but they all produced sound, ( Odyssei, IM1, IWavemachine and Module ), the older Korg apps, IMS-20 and IPolysix, did not record sound in the video, but, when I launched IMS20 and Ipolysix before I started screen recording, I got sound.
I was able to start screen recording before I launched Gadget and got sound.

Auria Pro, again, when I started screen recording before I launched it, I got no sound, ( you see where this is going, lol) but when I launched Auria pro before I started screen recording, I got sound.
So, apparently, for some apps, they NEED to be launched before starting screen recording to get sound in the video.

So many of the apps I tried earlier and got no sound, Ill have to test again and see whats what. Stay tuned :)

  • Just discovered something else with Beatmaker 3 and screen recording, audio units have to be loaded in before starting screen recording too, or they wont produce sound in the video.

  • Time for these guys to get working on VIDEOBUS to sort this out.

    @Sebastian ! I'm kidding ... sort of ...

Another half-baked addition. Why can’t Apple be bothered to test something as obvious as this?

No. That is a BRILLIANT idea. Now that Apple have made screen recording possible, an on the ball developer may be able to do the job properly.

I would buy VideoBus instantly, if it could do the kind of thing being talked about in this, and the IOS 11 thread. So, guys, is there any chance?

  • I was thinking a 'screen recording' channel to send to in AUM is needed! @j_liljedahl

  • Was hoping to use screen recording to easily make demos of presets / preset banks I am working on without having to rely on a computer. Was a shame to realize the recorded audio was in mono. SO close, yet so far away.

Makes me wonder is there are brainstorming meetings over new features, where a dozen high ranking acolytes in full hooded regalia, are seated cross-legged on the floor of Tim Cook’s office, at his feet in a circle.

Cook: “What the masses want, is a mono screen recorder, that almost does the job, but not quite. What used to be called Shovelware. Does anyone disagree?

    Acolytes: “No, oh wise one.”

The assembled all raise their iPhone X’s to photograph the great man for later private adoration.

maybe just record the audio in AudioShare and then merge the two together in a video editor?

There's an option to record mic audio, but the balance between the mic and the app audio is not great (the app audio tends to drown out the mic if playing at the same time you are speaking).

I haven't been hiding it ;) I just haven't spent a lot of time promoting it as I could have. But yes, MIDI-out is there, thanks for your support if you ended up getting it!

FYI: Just tested screen recording with Elastic Drums on its own and it did end up producing sound this time. Overall its a really good feature for making quick screen recordings on the fly. If you want something a bit more serious I would suggest recording using QuickTime while connected via thunderbolt on OS X.
