You can still disable wifi and bluetooth permanently in the settings. I read the new way, with only disconnecting from current connections through the control center, is working as intended though i haven't looked into why they want it like that

You're wrong about flightmode not disabling wifi though

  • I honestly doubt that

Most people i know have bluetooth, wifi, location services, siri etc. turned on all the time. Apple didn't need to mess with the control center in order to get data. Anyone who is concerned about privacy will figure out how to disable it in the settings

    https://www.theverge.com/2017/9/20/16340460/apple-ios-11-control-center-wi-fi-bluetooth-tricking-users

Instead, Apple leaves both running in the background to keep certain things intact, like the file-transferring feature AirDrop and productivity feature Handoff, geolocation services, and communication with a paired Apple Watch

    seems more plausible

  • As an Apple Watch user, this new way is slightly more convenient. I can quickly disconnect from multiple BT MIDI devices without losing connection to my watch.

Not a game changer, but not sinister either.

  • Apple things...

When AirDrop came out, when you turned on that feature, it will enable bluetooth automatically (obviously), but when you turned it off, you needed disable bluetooth manually.

It's quite a head scratcher and an unnecessary annoyance to all non-watch users. I hope they add a setting to make it behave the way it used to. And that line about automatically reconnecting at 5 AM must be a joke, right? Right??

Just to clarify it is still possible to disable WiFi & Bluetooth from control center. It’s true you can’t dissable them with their respective icons like before. Doing that now will just disconnect you from connected devices or networks. However, you can definitely still turn them off from control center by just enabling airplane mode, which will intern disabled the antennas as if you went into settings. It’s different but still possible. Try it for yourself!

Also once in airplane mode you can re-enable either attena by clicking its icon

Not ideal for a phone, which I (unfortunately) need to keep cellular up.

But jeeze, it's just like two more taps to do it in settings. Deal with it people! B)

(Still, smells sinister. But I'm over it now. At least until we discover the microphone and camera are undead as well)

  • And the Apple Pencil

  • If Apple wants your data they could just put the code in a microblob in the hardware. Then you couldn't disable it and you'd have to use a packet sniffer to even know about it

Let's be real here, using a smartphone is going to compromise your privacy. Do you visit any websites with those Facebook share/like buttons? Then they can track you. Doesn't matter if you click them. The phone company can track you as can your ISP and then there is the final boss of the internet, Google. Even if you're making an effort not to use any of their products and services, chances are your data is going through them one way or another

Given the choice i'd much rather put my faith in Apple than Google because Apple's primary business isn't selling user data to advertisers but if you want to avoid all the tracking, switch to a dumbphone

I'm an American and I feel it's my patriotic duty to make it as easy as possible for the NSA to spy on me. It's a more efficient use of my tax dollars as well.

Now, if I had enough of a life to have anything worth hiding I'd be all set.
