When did GarageBand get so good?
I’m in and out of GarageBand all the time, but it seems that recently it got amazing. The per-track plugins are great, especially as you can use AU and IAA apps in there. And drummer is hands-down amazing for a lone guitarist like me.
But when did it get the ability to re-amp recorded guitar tracks? Maybe I just missed that up until now?
GB really has become an amazing place to make music.

Yes it’s quietly great.
It is quite good, just about the only 'thing' i miss in it is the ability to edit the recorded controllers (pitch-bend, mod-wheel and the automation of the built-in instruments) and well AUv3 automation. I do believe we'll see an update to Garageband soon to accommodate AUv3's with different view-seize as demonstrated at WWDC'17.
There is a dude on YouTube that does simply amazing stuff with GB.

My personal favourite is running iRig Mic HD thru the 'effects', it's loads of fun
It's also very easy to drop any audio to the 'sampler', just drag any audio segment to the track with the sampler.
I do like that quantisation and swing are 'non destructive' so it's easy to try different variations on different tracks.
I'm looking forward to the next GB update for sure!
If there is a need to make custom AppleLoops that can be stretched and pitched in GarageBand, BM3 can be used for that
Nice tips, Samu! I’ll try the sample out later.
I really like GB and use it quite often. I'd like to see individual track export ( especially MIDI ) but I'm afraid that will never happen.
The percussion drummer recently added to Logic Pro...is so nice. I hope this comes to GarageBand on iOS. Also perhaps they will leverage iOS 11 drag and drop to showcase getting files in and out of GB
Wow, thanks for posting, I never realized it had insert effects. Don't see how to reamp though unless you're talking about dragging an audio clip to an amp track, in which case that's not new. But if there's something else im missing please tell!
GB is a wonderful app, that keeps getting better. I would hope a future improvement is to open it up more, so that we can easier use it alongside other great apps.

Or, Logic Pro X comes to IOS.
Reamping is easy. Record into the amp “module,” and then just go back and select another amp on playback. It looks like it records a DI, and losslessly applies the amp sim. You can even swap the effects after the fact.
I only found out by accident, while trying to do something else.
Both of these would be fantastic.
Samu I have some really cool Session Guitar loops That I wanna use in GB but how do I do what mentioned with BM3? For some reason I just can't get them to sync up with the correct set tempo.
It takes some work in BM3 at the moment, adding a load of slice-points to the sample (the more points, the more accurate the stretch is in Garageband will be). After that you can save the sample as 'Apple Loop' and send it to Garageband using 'Open In...'. (Transient detection is not that important for Apple Loops, but the more slice-points the better the results will be (64 slices or so).
I don't recall the name of the other iOS app that creates AppleLoops
Yes, GagrageBand has had re-amping for years, maybe since the beginning. Those amps sound good, too.
I like the piano and organs too.
I’ve recently recorded a couple of acoustic tracks in Music Memos, added the drums and bass, exported to GarageBand for piano and organ, then moved those tracks over to Auria.
Great stuff.
I have always liked GarageBand
Ah, reamping that way, yes, that's always been true, it records the dry signal and then processes the amp live.
But you can also take the touch instruments or any other type of track, then choose "merge" and select that track, it will bounce it to an audio file, then create another track with an amp and move that audio file to the amp track, you've now re-amped any other kind of track too.
If you want to save the original track, choose duplicate and then copy the file to the new track, because merge gets rid of the original track.
Had a wicked session in GarageBand tonight as a result of this thread. Cheers guys! Alchemy sounds unreal too. I never used this synth before - wow! I understand the hype!
If only Apple opened up the walled garden just a little bit... I'd take Link even.
I can’t figure out how to get just into piano roll midi editor without recording a phrase and then going to edit it. What am I missing?
I think that's it, you have to record something before you can get a track and get into edit. But once you have something recorded, you can edit all you want, just have to copy and paste to increase the length without recording.
A bit of a bummer. So far, the closest thing I’ve seen to something like cubasis on the iPhone (and normal DAW piano roll) is n-track, which does have its problems. Any other suggestions?
Lots of great things in GB - but i just cant stand the way ( and WAIT ) one has to switch between track (DAW) mode and instrument mode. A shame - specially now theres a kind of pattern mode in it
I love GB I know it backwards and front. However it often doesn't keep my audio unit settings at all. And if I have an effect activated a lot of the time it won't work at all after I reload it. It has some crazy CPU/memory problem things that I can't explain but it won't play some of my wav files on a song and will destroy it. I'm on the smaller first pro model too.
It's in need of a little update I think. I wish apple loved it more.
If you swipe with two fingers down from the timeline area, you can get to the MIDI editor. Then just tap once to edit. I’ve uploaded a quick video to illustrate:
It's always been good! ---Probably the best app . The music I've created over the past few years using GarageBand as my go-to DAW ,using outboard keydoards , midi controllers ,guitars etc the onboard sounds as well as Alchemy, the Au fx slot and of course our hosts S&M's wonderful Audiobus, and their other apps. A plethora of fantastic apps ins and outs ,effects ,how can you go wrong. There's a lot more under the hood just open it a little.---With regard to mastering there are some IMHO apps that do a splendid job. Having said all that l assume that you want to make some music so what you lay down you have to be happy with because it's very easy to turn your self into the NHILIST SPASM BAND yes a real art piece, their purpose was to empty a venue wherever they played. And you must check out SAMU' link I think it says it all for now ,can you imagine the updates that probably going to show up?
I’m my experience AU instruments are solid, but AU effects are less reliable. I expect improvements in this area hopefully in the next update.
There’s also a built in limiter in the (hidden) master bus. This is revealed when importing the *.band file into Logic Pro.
It seems Memos wants the playing to be done to a click and the tuning to be A=440 for the Drums and Bass to be in time/tune. I've had no luck using those features playing click-less and A=432.
The devs are aware of some of the shortcomings in AU effects i.e.AudioVerb by ViriSyn the presets don't appear just the control panel ,they assure me it wii be addressed in their next upgrade.
Thanks, considerate stuff. That's helpful.
I’m learning some great tricks in this thread. I’ll throw in another that may be obvious, but wasn’t to me. When you have an audio take you like, just drag the audio to a new track, and you can re-record on the now-empty audio-recorder (or guitar amp) track. This beats having to load up a track with an IAA Input over and over.
