Latest Camera Connection Kit

So I picked up a cassette-to-USB walkman thing on a whim.

It has a USB mini port. So I'll need a CCK to get the signal into the iPad (Air 2).

What is the best product for this? The latest lightning to USB camera adapter in the Apple Store doesn't specifically say it transfers audio, but surely that'll work, right? But do I really need to spend $45 on this?

  • It's worth every penny but too expensive :s

  • Actually found some cheap ones on eBay for $15.

You'll have to find out if the cassette player is "Class Compliant". If it is then the CCK should be able to receive the audio. As for whether other less expensive CCK options exist, I will only say the the only supported and guaranteed one is from Apple. I've not tried anything else.

but, if you're going to get a CCK, better to get the one that you can also charge your ipad at the same time with: https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MK0W2AM/A/lightning-to-usb-3-camera-adapter. Even more of a ripoff but a better alternative by far.

  • Agree. Get the original and from a trusted seller. Even if used as long as its Apple original item. I got the cck3 and it has built in light ning Port highly recommended it.

  • Hmm. I would assume that if it is built to send audio via USB into a desktop computer it is class compliant?

    Nope. Not a safe assumption.

I think Amazon has them for less than $25, but just now I read the reviews, and they're a bit...mixed. But still, I was ready to just run an 1/8" mini cable into the computer and go from there, so how bad could it be? I'll let you know if I discover whether it's class-compliant.
Once I learn exactly what class-compliant means.

  • Thank you!
Should have thought of BH Photo Video. (Which? If you're visiting New York? A must visit. In addition to the pretty good prices, it's just a crazy store that could be in no other city.)

  • I would only get an Apple CCK. The knock offs have been known to stop working after major iOS updates.

I have a buddy with one of those and he says the big knock is the players wow & flutter, saying it comes and goes. But on the cheap it's a good painless way to get analog cassettes into the digital domain.

Another option is to take a four-track cassette PortaStudio and play the tape running at the Phillips standard speed of 1⅞ips, not the 'hi-speed' option of 3¾. Route the output of the 4 track into your interface and record. If you're fortunate enough to have a good cassette deck, use the same process with it.

I still regret boxing up my Pioneer 3 head cassette deck years back and now I can't find the damn thing. Great machine, I looked on ebay and it looks like good 3 heads of all the good name brands aren't cheap. To me that route is for archival stuff, the ION unit will work fine for getting sounds off cassette for sampling, etc. Just make sure to get the ION brand unit, on Amazon there's like 15 different knock offs of varying degrees of quality & price. Check the reviews, usually someone alerts to the fact that a off shoot brand is a turd or not.

I once bought the original Apple lighting to usb CCK but as Apple loader cables this one had also a short life. Somehow some Apple cables are just too fragile.
On Ebay you can get alternatives as low as $1.12 (incl. shipping costs). This cheap alternatives are always updated as the they tend to stop working after iOS updates. But you can check buyers questions to see iOS compatibilty. In my eyes the price difference is just too big and if they stop working after an iOS update just buy some new ones. The price difference is just too big.
