How do you get sound out of interface since iPad takes up USB slot?

All interfaces I've seen have only one USB, except for iConnect which I have no interest in. So how do you send audio to the interface via USB? Every interface I've seen needs that USB to send audio to the computer DAW.

I've only been using the headphone out on the iPad for audio so far.

  • Not exactly sure of your question. Are you trying to record audio from your iPad into your computer and are wondering if there are alternate ways to just using the headphone port?

Yep. I read somewhere that the sound quality is better via iPad's USB/lightning than the headphone out. If it's not a big difference, I'll stick with the 3.5mm out.

  • UCA202- has optical digital out and RCA stereo out.

  • I don't have any Windows boxes to test with but iOS11 is supposed to have a feature that turns it to a class compliant audio&midi device (Mind In&Out and Audio Out).

This works perfectly on the macOS using the standard USB->Lightning cable and the iPad is being charged while in use...

    Wah? On windows? Sereallously?

So, USB out from iPad to UCA202 and then RCA out from UCA202 to my interface input?

  • Okay, I see how an interface like Focusrite iSolo does it: it has a "device link" that connects to iPad's USB/lightning. And the interface has a separate USB that goes to the computer.

How is this mode enabled, I may give it a go with windows.

  • I think you just need the CCK, Camera Connection Kit. Lightning plug on one end, USB on the other.

I don't have any windows box to try with but It's 'supposed to behave' like a Plug'n'Play device, maybe it needs iTunes 12.7 or something to be installed on the desktop?!

Other options are MusicIO and StuidoMux, ModSTEP has a built-in StudioMux support too..

Cheers, I'll have a tryout later.

  • Yes be interested to see if you can get audio and midi out direct to a PC via lighting as thought it was just a Mac.

There’s no IDAM for PC. You can use Studiomux tho via Lightning-to-USB.

Still unsure the original Q - but reads like - Audiohub 2x4 w/ USB 3 Camera Adapter.

    Swiss army iOS connection kit: CCK 3 + Audiohub 2x4 + Line2USB

I think you are confusing two different things when you posted about itrack solo. Your other part was correct, if you used that behringer connected to your iPad via the cck (camera connection, gives you usb out via the lightning connector), you would then send an analog or digital (I guess two of those behringer could connect via optical cables) line to another interface that is connected to your computer via a USB port on your computer. Only the iconnect interfaces connect to both.

If you have a Mac, you can plug your charging cable from your lightning port intuitive a USB port on computer and midi will now be both directions and audio out from iPad to mac.

On both mac abd windows, the app studiomux will allow you to stream audio back and forth from computer and ios device. You buy the app on ios and there is a free companion app on your computer.

    I hope that helps.
