the most simple audio connection...? (hardware mixer)
i'm want to connect my iphone with my hardware mixer as an external effect device for stuff like the AUFX Dub etc...i'm thinking to buy something very cheap like the behringer UCA 222 for this purpose but of course it doesn't power the ipad and i don't want to buy another charging lightning adapter for now.Then i got an idea: when my apple in ears are plugged in i have stereo headphones (aka output) and a mono microphone (le input) that you can use both at once.Is there a cable/adapter that would deliver the same conenctions or do i overlook something?
Comments
To use that jack with stereo out/mono in, I believe most people use the cables marketed towards guitar players. iRig, etc.
ah,i see.Yes that would do the trick i guess.I can't find any info if the signal coming out of the headphone output is stereo but i assume yes.Otherwise many effects would not make much sense.I'll keep that in mind,thanks.
i'm curious about latency though.I can use the lowest setting (64 samples) in AUM with my regular interface.Hope it would be the same with this one.
I have an "IRig" guitar adapter. I put it in quotes because when I bought it on Amazon (for ten dollars a few months ago) it was advertised under another brand, but the cable they sent me says IRig on it. There is no latency because there is nothing digital going on in the cable itself. It's the cheapest solution, but there can be feedback under certain conditions so take care with your ears. I've never had any significant problem with feedback, but it's something to watch out for.
It's all boxed away at the moment so I can't check, but after a lot of trial and error I think I used a stereo 3.5mm jack plug (connected to the headphone socket) which split to two quarter inch sockets, for my iPad. I then plugged guitar leads into each of these, and connected them to separate channels on my mixer. I could then use the mixer pan controls to get the full stereo effect.
Haven't tried routing fx through, but my mixer has a usb connection so might be possible.
the original iRig adapter is quite noisy and sensitive to crosstalk
there's an improved version iRig-2 around 30 bucks with added volume control
it's only 1channel input with instrument impedance (hi-z), might not be optimal with your source (hard to tell, depends on the item)
mechanical connection isn't the most reliable (obvious), and cabling will be a mess
(as with any cheap solution, like the UCA mentioned, powered hubs etc)
imho fx quality under IOS is excellent and there are versatile routing apps like AUM, turning the iDevice into a sophisticated fx unit - worth investing in a proper multichannel interface.
(of course if there's no budget, then it's like that... and the iRig-2 would be my choice)
@MonzoPro
but you are talking only about a normal stereo connection to your mixer,right?I'm looking for something that connects stereo to the mixer and at the same time at least mono audio in for the phone.
@Telefunky
the Ik website says guitars etc "or any other instrument"...but of course,thia could (and most probably would) mean any instrumetn wirh instrument and not line level.
You are right of course,a good interface is not that expensive but in almost all cases i would need a second of the expensive but powered lightning/USB adapter as well.I was just looking for a quick and dirty solution for now,if it will be too expensive at the end i'll probably prefer to buy another 19" hardware processor.That was the initial plan.But you are also right that the fx quality on ios is awesome and to have something i hardware on the same level you need to spend much more then 100-150 bucks..
yes, the TC Electronic FireWorx comes to mind, probably in the $500 range.
Roland go:mixer maybe.
If you can find a used Peavey Ampkit Link, grab it. Does what you want and uses a bit of active electronics to help with the headroom/crosstalk issues inherent with using that jack. I still use mine for exactly this purpose.
No matter what you get, if you're using the headphone jack route, you want to try to turn the headphone level down as low as possible. Boost at your mixer. This is where the crosstalk problems come in, particularly if your effects are pumping out loud stuff like high gain amps.
