iPad Air 2 Screen Seperation

My iPad Air 2 screen has separated from its case at the camera end by bowing in the middle. None of my other iPads-- 1, 2, 3, or mini 2 had this issue. I suspect it's due to the iPad Air 2 being so thin and frequently running hot. I'm posting this just in case others have or will experience a similar problem.

Not charging the iPad Air 2 while you're using it reduces the heat it generates.

  • I have a similar issue with my old iPhone 5 but my Air 2 shows no signs of this yet...

  • Seems iPhone 8 has similar problems

My old iPhone 5 did that a couple years ago. It was the battery expanding/bloating. I believe the end result of that it eventual explosion. ;) Or, just continually splitting open. It happens to lithium batteries near end of life.

I've got an SE now, but the iPhone 5 issue... I just took it to an Apple Store and they replaced it with a refurb. It was waaaay out of warranty too. I've also heard that if it hasn't done too much damage yet, they can sometimes just replace the battery and reseal the screen... they might even do that for you at Batteries Plus if you live near one. I'd try the Apple Store first. Who knows? You might get a fresh one with a brand new battery. :)

My current iPhone 5 is the 2nd 'free replacement' and they won't exchange it for 5S or SE so I'll just keep it until it stops working... And then it's time to get a new one :)

That's why I had my iPhone 5 so long. First they replaced it for the recalled home button for free, then they replaced it again for the battery bulging for free... I figured I'd just keep using it until it died. Would still be using it had I not smashed it to bits when I smashed my car hood down on it. Not only did all the glass break into small pieces, but it bent the whole frame into a V shape. lol ;)

  • Likely a swollen battery

  • In looking at the aluminum shell of the iPad Air 2, it is warped like a bowl with the screen sitting on top. I suspect over heating is the cause of this along with the thin design. I'll let it sit for a week under some moderate weight on a flat surface for a week to see if the warping can be reduced any.

I purchased the latest iPad Pro 12.5 yesterday and will put it through it's paces to see if it's worth keeping or if I'll decide to return it. I'll take the iPad Air 2 in to the Apple Store a week from now along with my iPad Pro 12.5. If I'm not satisfied with the answers they give me, I'll return the new one and find something else to do with my time and discretionary funds.

Now that's what I call service.
Wish they would have done something similar for me. My 3 1/2 year old iPad Air(1) 64GB would not react to touching the screen anymore. The screen had no visible physical damage, not even scratches. They offered me a replacement by a refurbished model for slightly more than €300. Man, that's a joke. iPad model 2017 with the double speed compared to the Air is 399 for the 32 GB model.

It hasn't always gone this smooth for me. I think in this case, at the time there was a lot of bad press about phone batteries exploding, etc. I bet that Apple made a decision (at least back then) that it'd be easier to just swap out any potentially exploding phone battery with no questions asked, instead of potentially having to deal with an injury or wrongful death lawsuit.

The potential harm of a touch screen not performing anymore, and the phone actually exploding... are not the same legal risks I reckon. ;)

I ended up getting a brand new replacement iPad Air 2 for the cost of AppleCare and a 90 day warranty from the Apple store which is a satisfactory resolution for me. I was told the source of the problem was a swollen battery as @Samu and others have suggested.

Unfortunately, the new iPad had iOS 10.1.1 installed on it so my backups for my old iPad Air 2 will not work unless I upgrade the iOS to iOS 11.0.3. This will provide me with another opportunity to give feedback about how Apple has failed to update the Alchemy app for iOS 11 after they purchased the app as part of Camel Audio.

Well, that sounds reasonable to me. You did get close to 3 years of use out of it? And now you've got a fresh one (refurb?) for $99? Not too shabby.

In all honesty... although I can tell my iPad Pro is more powerful, I don't believe I'm really using any more power than the Air2 provided.. and I doubt I was ever even topping the Air2 out either.

Yes it was a reasonable solution although I'm still pursuing the option of seeing if they have an iPad Air 2 with iOS 10.3.3 so I'm not forced to upgrade to iOS 11. The 12.9 iPad Pro (which was less capable for audio when I tested it) came with iOS 10.3.3 so maybe I'll get lucky.

  • After hearing from the Apple Store that they have no iOS 10.3.3 iPad Air 2 devices, it looks like I'll be stuck on iOS 11 or have no access to my backup information or have to upgrade to iOS 11. I let the phone support people know that Apple's failure to update the Alchemy app was very disappointing, hypocritical, and that it couldn't be replaced by other apps nor does GarageBand nor Logic have the sounds found in the Alchemy app which I've been using for the last seven years. Hopefully Apple will bite the bullet and update Alchemy to run on iOS 11 and perhaps even restore it to the AppStore.

  • Scary! I’m sure, when my iPad dies, I’ll bury her in the garden.
