The Vangelis Blade - My Tribute to Vangelis And Blade Runner, I remade the track

edited October 2017 in Creations

so I re-recorded the Vangelis and Blade Runner piece I posted the other day, this is much better and very close to the intended feel, still all the same principles, just a lot more organised and mixed better too, i hope you enjoy it.

If only they (Roy Batty and Vangellis) could see what you’ve seen with your eyes. :)

Lovely work, as always, Doug. Really looking forward to seeing the movie, too.

  • Thanks Doug, sounds great and a very nice way to extend my afterglow from seeing the new movie yesterday.

    or

In case you don´t like this, Doug, gimme a sign and it is removed!

I like to hear it

I did not normalize it or change it beside cutting out the song.

EDIT: Somehow, those links don´t look normal ... strange thing

No, it’s fine, I'm flattered, in fact if anyone want to add to it or edit it in any way here is the actual project zip file for Cubasis, it’s all waves anyway now, and all bassed around one note F

And here is a link to the full wave file in case anyone wants to just mess with or add to the track as is

I renamed it The Blade Traveller

  • Last night, my daughter and I went to see Bladerunner 2049. Earlier in the day, we watched the “Final Cut” of the original to both relive and provide a base upon which to set the sequel. We went to the 3D, Dolby Atmos performance, and I have to say that this sequel is profoundly disappointing, on so many levels.

Firstly, even the 3D experience cannot help jumpstart the 2D, or even 1D storyline, which is confused and so dreadfully plodding that it leaves you tired just trying to keep awake and suss out what is going on. Add to this the remarkably poor performances by the actors, trying valiantly to keep the movie afloat, and it’s yawn-city. Robin Wright’s performance was especially stilted and far below her usual standard. Some of the characters leave you pondering why they're even there. Even Harrison Ford’s Deckard, whom we have to wait for over 90-minutes to even see, is a non-masterful performance, thanks to the dreadful screenplay.

Visually, given the advances in CGI etc, I was expecting a tour-de-force, but instead of the crisp, lush cityscapes of the original, much of the movie takes place in drab, hazy, undefined sets and landscapes. For me, the city of LA was almost as an important character in the original as the actors. Pretty much all of that is nonexistent in this movie.

As with so many movies now, action is king, and certainly here, ultra-violence is featured to excess. Too many fight scenes, especially with psycho robo-bitch, and particular nastiness with the new arch-villain who seems to be more suited to a Marvel movie that this franchise. Oh, and throw in some T&A here and there, some Sex-with-Siri, and a 50-foot naked woman… WTF?

For me, one of the most woeful aspects was the soundtrack. Whereas the tone of the original movie was virtually made by Vangelis’ masterful score, performance and production, this dud seems as if it was cobbled together using sample libraries alone. Using a palette of thundering percussive hits, which are astoundingly loud in the mix, and throwing in some pad washes, with an occasional CS-80 brass sound, along with a astonishingly annoying chainsaw/bullroarer synth patch, again at ear-splitting volumes, doth not a soundtrack make. I will not compliment it by calling it a score, for there is no lyrical or melodic themes or motifs here at all. Simply a shitload of mediocrity, jacked up to ear-bleed levels.

Finally, when we get to the end, there is no satisfying conclusion! And this after over 2-1/2 hours, of which a good 45-minutes could have been cut with no effect to the “storyline” (other than staving off boredom). Go and see this if you must (as a huge fan of the original, I had to see it), but don’t expect it to exceed, match, or even come close to the original. I give it a 4 out of 10.

Yes, but did you like it ;)

  • Completely agree with sch. What made it worse for me was I watched it with a few other people and was ready to complain with them when we came out but they all enjoyed it :#
If only they had kept Jóhann Jóhannsson to complete the soundtrack :/

Actually, no, we both said “meh”. I won’t even bother to pick up the Blu-ray for this turkey.

I'll watch it when it comes to Netflix etc etc

  • Really, really like this piece, Doug :)

  • I actively dislike sci-fi movies and novels, but Blade Runner has always been one of my absolute favorite films. I like both cuts (the hard boiled narration) and the later director's cut. As is the case with the Taxi Driver score, I also own the score in multi-formats (vinyl, tape, CD)
From the reports I am receiving, I can safely say I won't be seeing this outing.

  • Great job Doug! Very true to the original.

My only complaint about the sequel is the soundtrack - while not bad by any stretch of the imagination, it felt a little uninspired. I don't know if anyone's followed the news surrounding the movie, but the composer originally hired to score the film was fired and replaced by Zimmer very late in post-production. Zimmer's work has undoubtably shifted the paradigm for scoring big-budget action/sci-fi films in the last decade, but that's therein lies the problem: every big budget action/sci-fi film sounds like it's been scored by Zimmer these days. So while Blade Runner 2049's soundtrack was really well done and serviced the film just fine, nothing about it was truly compelling IMO.

I'd be interested to hear what the original composer (Johann Johannsson, frequent collaborator of director Denis Villeneuve) had in mind for the score.
