I actually just used it in a really useful way for me, I have just finished a demo for the Elementals pack for Roli NOISE, and I set it all up in Modstep.

I recorded the audio the way I normally do, in the little Tascam, then synced it to the video, but the level was really low, so I stuck in Audacity and normalised it as per normal, but there was a lot of hiss, more than I was happy with anyway, so I dropped the normalised file back into Dropbox then imported that into Cubasis, then applied Brusfri to a very small and quiet section were the noise was pretty much just on its own.

The results are very good as you will hear later when I post the video

This video has its own link but I'll stick it here as a reference to Brusfri

So I can definitely see a need for noise control in vocals or instruments especially if you make more polished electronic music. However I also tend to make more lofi music that benefits from background noise. Not sure if this would benefit me but I'm super glad theres noise removal tools for ios now. I think other ferrite studio there were no noise removal options (at least for iPhone only users)

  • I can see how this is a useful app for most users, but take unwanted noise out of my tracks and there'd be nothing left...

the app learns the noisy section and you tune the envelope and 3 simple filters.
Klevgrand have always been sparse with control elements - few but essential :+1:
You have to fine tune the preset anyway - and it takes more time to try 3 or 4 than to dial while listening to the material ;)

The benefit of presets is if you're using gear that produces the same kind of noise. For example, a tape reel or some old spring reverb. If you have a lot of those tracks there's a point in being able to just fire up a preset for it. There's also a point if one is recording a lot of tracks in the same room with the same mic (16 tracks of backup vocals).

We'll discuss adding user presets (as @RockySmalls pointed out), but the downside is that I suspect many users might misunderstand the point of it, and try to use them when it won't work and just assume the app doesn't work properly.

Hi Johan, great that you all are considering it, sometimes on ios I get the feeling that the 'work-a-day' users get chastised a lttle in favour of the 'dabblers' .. but then again I wouldn't be the one inundated with questions from the bewildered. Probably (and this is just my opinion) there isn't a call for BrusFri to have much in the way of inbuilt 'standard' presets at all BUT the ability for the user to save Noise Profiles as presets would greatly speed up those multi-take instances or "theres that damn high impedance noise all over everything again!" scenarios.
whatever you guys decide, it's a fine Au and i haven't even started with any attempts to abuse it creatively yet :)

An album full of the sound of silence. Should sell well among the muesli knitters. :)

I’m loving the quality and simplicity of this app. It filled an empty slot very nicely.

yes, I get your point - but still consider it a minor issue, as performance still varies is live takes. And for postprocessing it's likely (or possible) that all takes with specific gear are treated one after the other with the same settings.
But I'd second 'user presets', in fact I misunderstood the original complaint (assumed it was about nothing delivered with the app, not that saving doesn't exist at all.

  • This app can NOT silence when your wife busts into your session to ask you about the water bill, ruining your whole groove, but really she just wants you to get off that damn iPad and spend some time with her. Use the Netflix app instead.

  • Lol!! Well said!

Had cause to use this again tonight on an old reading of a poem/story of mine by a friend. He'd done a great job on it but the file was hissy and noisy and just not usable. Entirely my fault. It took two seconds and no particular skill to get it cleaned up for prime time.

I'm guessing most everyone and their wife has this already, but just in case....you should. Great part of the tool kit.

Absolutely, and it's still unique among iOS plugins.
It does work with TwistedWave, but IAA support would be useful because AudioShare only supports IAA.

  • FYI theres a free desktop audio editor called OceanAudio that has a good noise canceller among the fx.

It's called ocenaudio and it's available for Win and Mac here: http://www.ocenaudio.com/
Use V2 for faster launch, V3 for the most current version.
It's really a great editor and brings some of the instantaneous feeling back that Adobe has killed with the later versions of Audition.

  • Just bought this after years of thinking, "nah, don't really need it". But it's on sale so I gave it a go. Man, am I glad I did. This thing is like sprinkling magic fairy dust on a crap sample, rendering it magically usable. I just recorded me saying a phrase and then used Brusfri to reduce all the background noise. It worked perfectly and I can now see me using this at least some of the time I make noise. Still not sold on Klevgrand's new one, Ting, but I'm open to persuasion ;)

Entirely possible it's not your Ting.

Haha. Yes, I may not like that Ting. I find Klevgrand apps hit and miss, and they never get updated, either, so WYSIWYG, which means I’m always careful now. I bought Knorr when it came out and to this day I cannot comprehend how anyone said, ‘yep, that will do - put it in the store.’ It’s terrible. But Brusfi is fantastic.

  • Haha, yeah, Knorr is one of my regrets too. Yes, Klevgrand are really hit and miss

  • Does anybody know, why Brusfri (and the other KLEVGRAND AUv3) is not in the select-list of the recorder of AudioShare? It would be nice to use it especially here.

  • Is it really better than doing some precision Fabfilter EQing? Presumably that's all it's doing in the background. Or is this app doing anything else?

  • I found it out. AudioShare seems to use only IAA.

  • It’s amazing. Discovered it on iOS but purchased it as an AU for Mac and use it all the time professionally to clean up dialogue from shoots in Final Cut Pro.

    It just works.

For Audioshare, I use Voloco. It has a free noise reducer that does the job (almost but not as good as Brusfri) well.

  • @Matt_Fletcher_2000 I did the same - bought the Mac version because that’s where I do this kind of stuff (and also for FCP work).

It is an amazing piece of software.
