I have had Artrage on my iPad for a very long time, but have not used it much. How does it compare for drawing/painting, any opinions? I'm an old sketcher, wouldn't mind doing more of that. But I don't have the large iPad Pro with the pencil, just the smaller size.

Well, a couple of years ago there was a separate iPhone version to the iPad version. I had both, and functionality wise they were identical (which is now why there is only a Universal one). I did stuff like this on my phone with Artrage: https://www.flickr.com/photos/hellquist/8460653702/in/album-72157632615530969/ (no, I don't really do faces).

I share most of @tja apps.

Just added some technical drawing apps (CAD Touch, Cartomap, Arrette SCL, GraphPad Pro...).

For painting or vector drawing, you could add Inspire Pro, Inkpad, Paper (wich is free), Tayasui Sketches Pro, even I keep on my iPad Adobe Ideas.

ASKetch is an universal little gem, wich is free often (last time, today).

I draw quite a lot at times (it goes in batches), on my iPad Pro (with Pencil).

I resemble that. Too many hobbies, so I tend to go all in on one thing for a few months, then move to something else, something else, then back to art.

I mainly use Procreate (raster) or Concepts (vector). Medibang Paint is another surprisingly capable option that is extra nice on the 12.9” pro.

I enjoy art and design but a I prefer the old school method of art by using paint, charcoal, pencil and paper. The Apple Pencil onto the slippery gloss of the iPad screen doesn't have the same texture has paper but it is a lot better than what art and design was like on computers before which I didn't like.

For me I prefer doing art and design the old way and doing music production and video production using computers.

I've been enjoying Procreate for some time now, now pixikai and Photoshopping in affinity. Anyone else enjoy this other awesome habit to have on our machine? Any other cool recommendations along those lines? I've got my eye on this putty3d app that looks amazing

You gotta get iColorama. It's amazing.

Artrage is fine. Use what you got, man.

But I cannot find "pixikai" in the App Store.
    Mistake in spelling?

  • So for a guy with a new 10.5 + pencil who really just likes to doodle occasionally, which drawing/sketch app should I get? I’ve tried Paper but I don’t like it much. Price doesn’t matter, and I’m not intimidated by deep feature sets, as long as I can get the basics up and running fairly quickly.

To recap, amateur noodler looking for best drawing experience with Apple Pencil. What do I want?

    Procreate

Thanks for keeping it simple, bought no questions asked.

  • Procreate has such a clean simple interface, it doesn't get in the way of your creativity. But it has a lot of power under the hood. In my view it is the top drawing/painting app.

There are foils that can be used to get this paper feeling for the iPad!

Do you know where I can buy those foils?

  • Yeah Procreate was definitely the right choice. It is awesome. Hell, maybe one day I’ll get beyond abstract painting and drawing X-Men characters.

  • I have a lot of them, but I only use two now— Procreate for natural media and Adobe Draw for line work. Procreate just came out with version 4 and improved smudge effects and I don't think I'll be looking back anymore.

Animatic is a simple new animation app that's reasonable, but only for the simplest of squiggly animated things. Could be fun for music video fodder. I've yet to find an animation app for iPad that's worth spending "serious" time with.

I seem to remember they were topics about this in the Procreate forums, when I find something I will post here!

    Here, some name are mentioned:

    https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/screen-protectors-w-rough-surface-for-drawing-w-pencil.1962486/

Also, there is the solution to come:

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jansapper/paperlike-make-ipad-pro-feel-like-writing-on-paper

This sounds promising. I think I will purchase the iCarez HD Anti-Gare protector as the reviewer on the macrumours link said it was like drawing on paper which is what I am wanting when doing art and design on my iPad Pro 12.9.

Nothing against Linea, but I think that everything can as much easy be done in Procreate!
Just start with a layer where you sketch with the many virtual pencils or whatever and then add more layer to draw and paint and fill.... and so on.

I disagree. Most of it might be done with Procreate but with a lot of fiddling with brush settings. Linea has two etxremely well designed pencils out of the box and perfect interface for sketching, can' really compare it to Procreate -- which is great at its core disciplines, drawing and painting

  • I see Procreate had an update a couple of days ago, but it's not appearing in my update list.

Looking forward to the Store being fixed.
