The octatrack is a beast to wrap your head around. The digitakt is closer to a rytm imo. Basically a digitakt on steroids with analog drums.
Cool! Enjoy dipping into the elektron world. Love it.
If i may sprinkle some gas evilness... sequencing power on the circuit and toriaz is overkill with the octatrack on board. I would sell and that put those dollars towards other gear that concentrate on sounds rather than sequencing.
Double post*
Nah we’re good. I researched my workflow needs before adding it to the arsenal. Happy...for now
I have a minilogue as well...just need another midi cable to bring it into the fold.
Interesting certainly for live use, what's the memory - loading time like in use, what's it like to get the sample data across to it.
While it’s amazing for live sets, you can build entire tracks with it. The only limitation it seems is how you put things together based on ones understanding of the constraints given to them.
At the end of the day it’s just another tool in the toolbox of magical music making boxes.
@echopera: Thanks for your well written and informative responses here. I’m the US and for some reasons can’t play your videos. I’ll check my wi fi and try later
I’m scratching my hardware itch w the new Korg Cross 2 . Plenty of knobs and such a d a killer interface for iPad.
Finally got the OT routing to work with my iPad via AUM so I can drive the great soft synths and hardware all from the OT.
There’s just something about hardware knobs and sequencing which just feels right.
Love me some knobs
Here’s a second test drive sequencing iOS and hardware from the OT. I used AUM as the bridge...it’s a long noodling piece...
That looks a fun setup!
that set up does look tasty... they seem so quiet about the elektron rytm mk2 that I'm getting paranoid that they might be not wanting people to know the goodies inside it
so they can not interfere with the sales of the others.?
Love that moment at 0:56 where he realises he wanted to add something else. Haha.
Cuckoo is just so Watchable!
All the info about the rytm mk2 is on the elektron site.
Cool stuff!

I need a Tums.
I'm mostly on board with the overbridge split (good software needn't be a free add-on) but feeling like remote editors should be a part of the free package. Free comes with a visualizer but not and editor. Presumably the same thing with edit controls disabled (but I've not seen it). 8 channel streaming, stand-alone interface options, etc... fair enough.
hmm
Yes it is.....if you don't use the onboard sequencer then Circuit is essentially a sound module with 2 x Synth and 4 x Sampler (limited to one sample per sampler unless you send CC) so that can get a little fiddly.
Dude. I totally get you. I’ve been on the hunt for a DAWless hub for a long time. Almost went for the Social Entropy Engine, which I think would make a great tactile counterpoint for the iPad, but the Octatrack won. It’s a beautiful thing, and not nearly as befuddling as I’d anticipated, there’s just a lot of it. Mine got here on Monday
For those who’ve been wondering what covers similar territory on iOS, I’m no expert by any means but Egoist might be the closest, at least in terms of building tracks, although it’s kind of a Fisher Price version (I say this with love, it’s an excellent app). The Octatrack’s an impressive thing, and very versatile - it’s a groovebox, sampler, sequencer, fx rig, loop machine... A lot of people seem to not get on with it, so I guess it depends a lot on how your brain works, but for me it ‘feels right’ and that’s a great feeling.
I think people don’t bond with the OT because there’s no one way to use it. A lot of people buy one based on hype and don’t really have a specific need in mind yet, then get lost trying to figure out what they could use it for with so many options available. It’s not hard, it’s just not a one trick pony either.
Yeah. It can be overwhelming if you don’t have “intent” of usage in mind.
As I indicated above I was really looking for a multi channel hardware based sequencer...and while the Squarp Pyramid and Social Entropy Engine seem stellar on paper, I couldn’t justify the $600+ price tag when things like Digitakt are out there (Sampler+Sequencer).
After comparing the DT and OT I decided to save a little longer because I knew I would want a Song mode plus time stretching capabilities.
So far I am over the moon with the OT. Now that I have it running fluidly with my great iOS and hardware synths I can let my “intent” run wild.
i think it's hard to answer the original question in general. Some people like the Octatrack philosophy, others get infuriated by its operation.
I can have fun and creative sample slicing with SugarBytes Egoist (and BlocsWave to some extent), track composition including samples with Modstep or Stroke Machine or BM2/3, and hands-on live sample tweaking with Samplr, and all supporting Midi Sync.
For my taste, these apps are more enjoyable to use than the Octatrack.
I don't know any app that combines everything like the Octatrack does, but for the price of an Octatrack I can easily buy three iPads plus a nice hardware controller plus the USB3 power adapter
I don’t think it’s hard to answer the original question. There is nothing like Octatrack on iOS.
Sure, you can get similar features by combining different apps with extremely different and unique workflows... but it won’t be the same.
iPads are extremely fun and amazing for making music on.
Octatracksare as well.
As creators we just need to find the tools which fit our workflow needs.
Fwiw, I think BM3 gives us the most flexibility and power when composing, mangling, sampling, and doing what you want.
what the hell is up with this workflow though.... this is from an old post, is the octatracks' work flow still like this?
"Sometimes I make entire songs in the OT.
Start some drum groove on track 5-8.
Than I sample the A4 connected to the IN CD. Then guitar chords on IN AB.
Track 1-4 are flex machines.
When I have the loops I save them, change the 2-4 tracks to static and reload to static slots.
When I have a structure I add all the 84Mbyte to the track 1.
Start the playback and record IN AB - guitar impro, fills on a long track.
Save that as well and assign to an static slot.
Then change the input of the flex TR 1 to internal recording, and record the full song.
After that I copy the final wave to the pc and voila.
All this could be much simpler if the OT would have more RAM."
Oddly enough though, most of the OT music that people create sound very similar. Go figure.
Not that I mind that. I like the glitchy stuff
Same goes with Digitakt.
Yeah, I often get criticized for not glitching my stuff up more with the OT, but I think it's been done to death. It's fun to do, but a little goes a long way.
i think that once you learn a new workflow and it resonates with you the end result is not THAT different. i find similarities in what i do in an op-1 or in gadget or in elektron gear. i gravitate toward certain sounds, certain bass lines, ear candy etc... while i'm learning something i might try something completely out of my comfort zone, but will revert. the exception is when i record a song with structure, that i might lay down a full song ep or guitar rhythm scratch track and vocal and work on top of that...but if it's loop based, it's gonna sound like me no matter what's looping it.
@Tarekith thanks for all the tutorials, i must have watched the transition trick a dozen times when i had the octatrack. when i can get the mk2 (i hope before december) i'm probably hitting it a couple more times to remember.
Welll said, I find the same thing about the sound of the music I make being not that dependant on the gear.
Glad you liked the videos!
Modstep has some similar functionality. Can sequence hardware, control cc modulation, sample internally, not much of a sample mangler. I wish Alesis would revamp their iPad IO devices to have multiple outs (& iOS to support it). Would make for a killer device.
