MIDI control as an output
Not sure when this happened but it's out.
https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/midi-control/id418777577?mt=8
I picked it up but anyone have anything to say about this app?
Comments
Hey I picked it up, however I noticed the following
1 need to be in input where you could play more than one synth and record in MultiTrack Daw
2. When you use as a output app and record from input there is glitches in sound
3. Virtual Midi needed to see notes played
I think this app has some promise with some update and fine tuning
Nice. Thank You for the response. 1. Can't you just use it without pluging it into audiobus to record into MT DAW? 2. I didn't try to record into MIDI control, probably never will, I used the method I described in (1), 3. i don't see how virtual midi would help.
I spoke with the developer today about some added features and such. When they implement the things we discussed. It will open some doors on ios that to my knowledge have been closed. Should be great!
Virtual Midi is always good especially when you connect a midi controlled keyboard via the camera kit.
Yeah but why would you do that with MIDI control when the whole point is that it has two keyboards to control two apps? Can you set up your midi controller to split between the two? I haven't tried anything like that yet. Would be pretty awesome if that is possible.
Also I see your point about it being in the input.. Kind of need the record button and play buttons. I'll mention it to the devs. Thanks @JuniorPops :-)
Update: The devs confirmed that they will be adding it as an input as soon as possible.
Hi -- we'll be updating to allow MC to be in an input slot as well; should happen soon. We're also adding support for MIDI file playback -- the idea is to be able to load in a MIDI file, select a particular track and Audiobus-ready synth, and be able to push a button, and then have the MIDI performance for the track rendered. Logic on the Mac does track "freezing" this way, to keep the CPU demand low.
When there are many synths cranking away at the same time, it's possible to overwhelm the CPU in an iDevice, resulting in glitches. The data movement required for Audiobus only makes it trickier. By rendering a single track at a time, there's a lot less load on the CPU, and then you get a recording that's clean, which you can then import to another app for mixing.
To split an external keyboard across multiple apps you need MIDIBridge. I split my keys for live performances and apply separate velocity curves to each app and alter routings on the fly.
In a way MIDIBridge is like Audiobus for MIDI. If you're doing anything remotely sophisticated MIDI-wise, then the 'Bridge is your friend!
Hey Thanks @Snoopy , I've seen MIDIBridge come up a few times on the App Store, I always wondered exactly what I could do with it.
@ryan MidiBridge does an awful lot. It makes inter-device network midi sessions a snap. It can fake virtual midi for apps with midi but not virtual midi. It can filter midi signals and I believe change them in real time. I initially bought it because it makes my midi mobilizer 1 work with core midi but have found a lot of uses for it over time.
@syrupcore I bought it already! Get off my case!! ;-) lol Just kidding. Thanks man. I had no idea I could do so much with it, Midi mapping is HUGE, was one of the major things missing for me taht i always use on computer.
Now when @SecretBaseDesign gets the midi file player going I'll be all set. :-)
Shhhhhhh.... That's a secret. ;-)
And yeah, MidiBridge is pretty darned slick; definitely recommended for anyone doing serious MIDI hacking.
@SecretBaseDesign but... but... but... you said it here first! I gave nothing away lol ;-)
Hi everybody! you know where I can find a good video tutorial showing how to split keys in MidiBridge? I also need desperately to communicate midi clock from my computer to my IPad apps ... Any help would be appreciated!
@SecretBaseDesign: are you planning on providing the synth part? GM I Presume? Whch one - the (pretty good) SoundFont Bismark uses? And, how about non-GM composition - if you do the synth, how are you thinking of handling patch assignments?
Unrelated: MidiBridge- what you said!
@syrupcore: yes, real time mapping is a strength. As to faking it for deficient controllers, MB will also take an Akai SynthStation25 plugged in using the 30 pin connector - which then uses Akais' custom protocol - and make it show up as a Virtual MIDI source for Apps that do not implement Akais' API.
@dwarman -- the plan is to make it easy to map a MIDI track and channel from a MIDI file to different virtual MIDI apps (and channels). If a track has MIDI drums, you'd send it to something like BS-16i. The code is pretty much working now, but I'm trying to clean it up so that it's easy to use. We've got quite a few things going on right now, so I'm behind where I wanted to be with the releases.
Patch assignments are a royal pain. Very few apps support changing patches over MIDI; the real challenge is that modern synths can have almost unlimited numbers of patches, and there's no common way to handle this. The JACK API could probably be hacked to handle it, but I really like what we have with CoreMIDI and Virtual MIDI much better. There's a chance that something might get added to Audiobus to handle patches (it's doable, but would require some work...).
