Took WerkBench to the Machines in Music exhibition this weekend in NYC!
The Machines in Music modular synth exhibition took place in NYC this past weekend.
It was a unique opportunity to not only play with all this gear (much of which I’d only seen on the internet) about but also meet some of the people behind these companies!
I decided to make a project out of it using my sampling app WerkBench.
It took a bit of practice to get my field-sampling workflow down and I could hardly hear what I was doing but it was still a great experience. The battery powered wearable rig was as follows:
-iPad Mini 2 running WerkBench
-14000 mAh USB Battery
-Audio interface for the iPad
-Field recorder tracking everything
-DSLR Camera
-Headphones (not nearly loud enough in the cacophony… do y’all have recommendations for a battery powered headphone amp?)
-Backpack full of batteries, cables, water, pen and paper, etc.
In order of appearance:
Koma Elektronik - Field Kit FX (which is 6x funded with 26 days left on their kickstarter!)
Zetaohm - FLUXUS ONE
LANDSCAPE - STEREO FIELD
DreadBox - ABYSS
Moog Audio - DFAM(Don’t GAS too hard, just patch up your pitch envelopes!)
Critter & Guitari - Organelle
Roland - D-05
Roland - SH-01a
Verbos - Bark Filter Processor & more
BASTL - BITRANGER & SOFTPOP
The vibes were great and there may be a hardware WerkBench stirring somewhere in the bowels of potentia. Stay tuned!

Cool
I've got a little battery-powered headphone amp that came free with some headphones. Inexpensive ($27), efficient, I think it's got 3 or 4 built-in eq settings. Sounds decent. Like it enough that I might get their $60 model. The free one I got is basically the same as this one:

Ah thanks!
Great post! Thanks for the links, too.
Damn, what a cool adventure that sounds like.
It was a total cyborg safari. Friendly people too!
Jealous of the event and the location. Thanks for reporting back
You'll look an idiot, but when I'm working in the shop I wear buds with earmuff style protectors over them. Much cheaper than noise cancelling headphones, and you reduce the noise rather than add to it, avoiding ear damage.
Enjoyed the vid, too, btw. Wish you had more time to work your magic with the song, but enjoyed nonetheless. Must remember to do some sampling the next time I go to an event like that.
Wicked! Thanks for sharing that reminder of just how powerful the mighty WerkBench indeed is. That looked like a blast for you. Congrats on your awesome piece you did there.
Guess what app I'm off to enjoy!
Good idea! Not too worried about looking like an idiot: with the right attitude we can make this the new cool thing!
Hey Karl, I'm not a sampling kind of guy. But if you and Justin Walter keep putting out videos, you're going to force me to buy Werkbench.
