Octatrack + Audiobus 3 = Fun fun fun

Just picked up an iConnectivuty Mio to route Midi from Octatrack directly into iPad usb via CCK. Now I can constrain my notes to specific scales while sequencing things from the OT.

Goal is to have a hardware based sequencer setup so I can play back iOS/macOS soft and hardware synths all over USB from the Octatrack.

  • Nice. Vid please! :)

  • Very cool. I’m trying to figure out best way to do the opposite. Since my elektrons don’t do midi i am using xynthesizr to control my streichfett. Don’t want to involve any more complicated apps (like bm3 which i haven’t opened again). These setups like yours seem cool but i hate linking stuff and troubleshooting when i reopen them. Maybe once bram comes through with the new apps i can use those.

Hrmm. So far the most complicated thing was to pick the correct midi to usb interface. Now that we have scenes and state saving in AB3 I just have to setup the Scene once, and load it the next time I want to sequence.

    I have 2 scenes saved
    . iOS midi 8 - Mixolydian - Key: E
    . iOS midi 4 + 4 Hardware - Mixolydian - Key: E

So depending on what I want to do I load up the appropriate scene and noodle away.

Next I need to figure out how to get AB3 to listen to midi cc changes coming from the OT.

The same workflow will work for the Digitakt or any other hardware based sequencer fwiw...once you establish your AB3 scenes you are good to go.

This is just day 4 of having the setup so I will definitely learn more as I become more comfortable with the OT.

    Cheers

  • Cool. But i don’t have hardware sequencers, just cv. So maybe i should get ab3 finally. Or juwt bring midi loops into auria and do it all in there, which is where i record my jams into. Then i could even mix in stuff not coming from the elektrons. Gonna try this first. I’m trying not to buy any more apps. Gotten way too many i don’t use and can’t resell like my hardware of course. Just waiting on a fabfilter sale to get pro q and pro l.

  • Finally got around to getting some nice little notes out of the Octatrack and into AB3 to drive Zeeon, Mood, Ripplemaker and RuismakerFM.

Short but kind of fun. Need to play with the OT some more but so far loving the workflow:

  • Keeping with the theme of the thread. Here’s another track to add to the exploration of this hardware.

  • Echo, these are great. I don’t totally understand the process, but I approve of the result!

Hahah. Thanks. I’m just using the Octatrack to sequence the iOS synths I’m hosting in AUM via Midi.

  • Definitely gonna try this out. Just snagged a new OT mk1 for 850

FOr sure! Im already drooling w the possibilities. Methinks the OT will take the performing burden off of my iOS rig and let my apps shine as sound generators and FX.

    Most definitely

  • That's one lovely setup!

  • That's one lovely setup!

  • You can say that again

  • so,...u using ab3 or aum mostly to trigger synths with the ot? just sold a moog subphatty originally thinking of getting a minitaur and an fx pedal but am thinking i might get the to (mk1, about 500 cheaper than mk2).

Yeah...using the OT to sequence iOS and Physical synths...and using the 8 audio tracks on OT to add samples to the compositions...

Recent Model 15 update to AU has opened up a lot of sonic joy on the set up :)

  • Ive been meaning to try the same thing with an mpc1000. Maybe Ill try it tonight.

    Do it! Do it!

  • @echoopera

Can I ask why the Mio? Couldn't this be done via the USB out?

Just interested, don't know if that is one way or not?

The Octatrack only supports Midi In/Out...so I needed the Mio Midi to USB setup to connect my sequences from the OT to the CCK on the iPad...

You can also use the iConnectMIDI2+, but it's not as portable...and since I am taking the OT with me from time to time, I wanted a more direct connection solution.

Ah ok. I just figured you could use the USB on the OT with the CCK for midi in/out.

I wish. OT uses USB just for data transfer. No Midi over USB.

  • Bummer! Its a strange choice by Elektron.

I checked last night and the USB on the Digitakt does midi in/out.

Would have thought they'd add that to the MKII's.

Anyhoo, looks like the Mio is doing a good job and seems pretty affordable for the purpose.

  • Had a little time today to enjoy a little ambient exploration using Zeeon, Model 15 and iDensity via the Octatrack:

  • @echoopera Ok. So got the ot mk2 yesterday and have started some preliminary midi tests. Had the original ot for a few months about 2 years ago and had apretty good go at it but am relearning everything i had done and never used the midi sequencer. Few questions for you that are probably in the manual but....

    1. Does usb send midi out and if so do u need a powered hub? (i use a cck3 and it didn’t work but once i changed to regular midi i realized i had other stuff wrong, so trials were VERY unclinical.

    2. Velocity seems to be just off (0) or on (1-127). Haven’t delved into cc’s yet but seems weird that this is on the main midi page and it doesn’t respond well.

    3. Don’t see conditional triggers for midi, is this just audio?

    Congrats on the new toy.

No midi only works on the OT devices. I use a iConnectivity Mio to convert midi to USB.

You have to dial in the Velocity on the Notes View.

    1. Don’t see conditional triggers for midi, is this just audio?

It’s there. Just hold down the Step and press the < key.

  • @echoopera said:

Thanks. Awesome about the conditional trigs. Hmm not in front of the ot at the moment but it seems that i was pattern locking the velocity right there in midi notes and all the way down to 1 the volume was full blast. 0 was off.

  • Yeah. I think it depends on the synth. I can’t get velocity to map to every synth. I’m sure it’s a settings issue on the recipient synth side of things.

did you map velocity on the model 15? i have a bunch of stuff mapped and it works perfectly, but don't have velocity working (at this point maybe i should just be messaging you, but hey someone else might be dealing with this issue).
