Ton drum machine : iOS elektron parameter locks UPDATE now with IAP sample import

The only drum machine I’m aware of with electron like parameter locks. Not as extensive sound design as elastic drums as sample based but the parameter locks are a cool and under untilised feature on iOS

  • what can be p.locked in the app?

  • Adsr tuning saturation Filter and fx sends

  • nvmd got it

  • Damn - it’s free. Got. I still have my Machinedrum and miss the infinite tweaks on iOS. This is actually pretty nice.

    And it’s free.

That big blank space in the top-middle would be enough space for a sample editor.
Hopefully a sampler/sample import IAP is coming.

Agreed. Hopefully the developer is on here. Loads of potential

  • Did you check Mercury? Sample import from AS and P-Locks.
Mercury Drum Sequencer by Marcus Spangenberg

Each track can have 2 samples etc...takes a little time to figure it out but great DM

  • Kool. Not keen on the ui but interesting

I’m actually not seeing the parameter locks on Ton. How do you select a step?

  • edited October 2017

Press and hold the step. The p lock parameters are highlighted. Change them then repeat for following steps

  • Oh. Press and HOLD while you adjust the parameters. I thought it was just a long press. That's interesting. And requires two hands. But it definitely opens things up.

  • Other p-locking drum apps: Patterning, Elastic Drums and MV808.

    I didn’t know that MV808 had p-locking. Thanks!

  • I really like this one. The interface, minimal design, sound, function. Baffling why it's still free.

    And DM1.

  • Are they P locking in the sense that you can do step by step automation? (as opposed to real time automation). It's this that Elektron has and I am not aware that Patterning DM1or ED can do (But Ton can)

  • Never having actually used any Elektron gear, I might not understand the finer points of parameter-locking, and maybe I am misusing the term? But in patterning and elastic drums, you can change all sorts of parameters in each step. In Elastic drum you can also do it live, and in patterning, you can also draw in the automation. And I just remembered that TriqTraq also has crazy Step-by-step automation capabilities.

As I understand it , the parameter locks enable more precise parameter changes by locking it to a particular step. Whereas the automation with others tends to be "live" and not as easy to be pinpoint accurate. If that makes any sense. The results are more controlled in PLOCK

HOWEVER - you are correct - TRIQTRAQ does it! I've used it loads and did not realize until now that is Step Edit mode you can lock parameters for Filter Delay Send, Level and decay - so not as many parameters as Ton but does do it!

  • Ok, then we are using the same definition. You can do that in patterning and ED and Triqtraq.

  • And Patterning does having just had another play, although its not easy to see all the parameters at one which is part of the sound shaping fun. I think I need to shut up now.... still Elastic Drums doesn't .... which is a shame

  • Can you tell me how in ED? Tried and failed

  • While you can achieve same results with both p-locks and automation the difference is the workflow. With automation you select the parameter and change it across steps, with p-locks you select a step and change one or more parameters for that step.
Same thing from different angles and usually very different results.

  • ED has a kind of hidden-panel step sequencer if you long-press on AUTOM. You can get a really granular in there.

    well noticed, mr. holmes.

Got it! Actually that's brilliant. Although Ton still is the one with the most simple per step multiple plocks

    Quite

  • And how could I forget SeekBeats! P-lock nirvana!

A main difference between elektron parameter locks and automation is that you can change the sound (patch or sample) per step. So your kick drum track can have a snare on steps 7 and 12 for example. You can also change the actual fx parameters, like delay tempo, etc. Even change from a low pass filter on all notes to a high pass on one note. Basically holding down one step you can completely change everything about that moment in time.

Dude, ever since you joined the Digitakt cult you've been trying to extract my $649 with brutal efficiency. First the woozy and ecstatic videos of your Digitakt sessions, and now this astonishing fact! And then you just posted a video of using the thing to sequence iOS apps?

All right. I'm selling my old Rickenbacker bass.
