String Ensemble IAP in Beathawk or iSymphonic?
What is better quality of strings? I know that iSymphonic has a lot of different strings, and lots of expensive IAPs, but maybe Beathawk pack would be similar in quality?
Comments
Isymphonic. Many like beathawk iaps, but personally i didnt like the ones i got at all, and they definitely are not on same level as isymphonic. With isymphonic i recommend getting at least two or more iap packs, as what comes with the app isnt very much
ismyphonic has been crashing with just two instances of AU loaded in AUM. Better sounds than beathawk, but very unstable for me. Beathawk has never ever crashed on me.
Thanks !
Strange, because I use i Symphonic all the time on my 12.9 mark 1, and no problems like that...
However, I use to restart my baby and clean the memory before sessions.
iSymphonic is the champion if you ask me... the sounds are good and the selection is huge
In my ears it also beats Miroslav 1 and 2
Cheers
Colossus piano was very unstable for me, so I didn’t take the chance on isymphonic
ISymphonic orchestra sounds are better than Beathawk, but Beathawk has some great ethnic sound packs, and the choir pack is awesome.

I bought a few BeatHawk expansions, wasnt mad at the sounds but I didnt get the String Ensemble because I started using BeatMaker3 , so I went with Isymphonic because its an audio unit and turns out it sound great to me. I havent bought and IAP's yet but I probably will get a couple, but the sounds that come with it sound great. Now the Audio unit aint much to look at, just a menu to select sounds. The stand alone has a much better GUI. I do use BeatHawk as an AU in BM3 sometimes but Ive had some experiences where I load a BM3 song that I used BH as an AU and sounds didnt load.
4 instances inside AUM , easily handled . Maybe you have an old version?
iOS 10.3.3 Air2
On iPad Pro 10.5 11 beta. I wrote crudebyte about iSymphonic crashing. They said it’s because apple has a 370 mb limit per AU instance, and to complain to apple. So it definitely depends on which sounds you are using.
While I appreciate their desire for quality sounds, there’s just no reason the samples need to be that big. Of course they will crash.
Yes, I saw this kind of explanation on Layr's website: https://www.livingmemorysoftware.com/contact.html - they limited the appp to IAA & Audiobus because of that. Of course if it is the same problem.
For strings, if you're really into strings, you kind of need a bunch of things. It gets expensive. iSymphonic is good, you need a selection of IAPs. Beathawk is good. Thumbjam has some good sounds. Sampletank has some great IAPs for strings as well. The reason for needing variety is the different kinds of strokes; you need samples for pizzicato as well as legato, and all the other variations of plucks and bowing. You need a sample with one string, and samples with lots of strings. And of course, they all sound different between the packs, and you might like the cello in one IAP in iSymphonic, and the violin in a different pack in Sampletank.
What we really truly need is the ability to key switch somewhere in iOS, so you can flip between samples mid piece. Not there yet.
Strings are difficult, especially if you're featuring them. It's hard to get them to sound completely natural. Electronic sounds are way easier - with acoustic instruments people have expectations, and the range of expressiveness of a real player on a stringed instrument is very difficult to replicate.
You are right 4 instances and playing like crazy on the build in keyboard result in iSymphonic crash.
3 instances where fine .
Heifetz is the greatest natural sounding string “machine” of all times.
But he’s dead.
Isymphony is also 16 part multi timbrel, so just use 1 instance and use multiple midi channels
Can you place a different preset for each midi channel?
absolutely - I have various strings on midi channel 7, various choirs on midi channel 4, various, brass on midi channel 5 etc (all selected by programme changes on my Midi Designer IPad midi controller
