Workflow ideas. Help with transition to iOS.

Hello all. I have now with my health issue going to have to leave the desktop arena and work solely on my iPad Pro 2017 model.
I’m a bit lost to say the understatement. I had about 400$in gift card money in the App Store so I went crazy. I am so used to working with Fl Studio or Reaper, that I’m a bit lost when it come to iOS. Can any of you kind souls offer some tips on workflows?

I see lots of cool things done in AUM or Audiobus, but never how your incorporating that into a song. I’m mostly into edm/industrial/ambient stuff.

Here is list of what I have. Not trying to show off or anything just looking for some tips.
Thanks!
Chaz

  • Where's Bebot?

  • Well you definitely have all the tools to make the next hit! Just keep focus on ending a project without being distracted by the other apps. This is number one reason why nothing gets done in IOS by me, too many distractions :s

  • How can anyone make music with just 11 synths? Back to the app store, pronto.

  • I haven't found an iOS DAW that fits my workflow (although I'm yet to try Beatmaker).

I've had the most success using AUM as a live jamming environment, and then taking the recordings from there into a linear DAW for chopping, arranging and mixing.

I make mostly techno/ambient music and I've found that the 'live' approach is producing the best music I've made in years.

Personally I would say just live in Beatmaker3 as your primary host... because after seven years in iOS and all the daws later this is what it has boiled down to for me. I grew up on Front 242, DVOA, Psychic TV, Ministry, FSOL, the ORB, eyenstruzennewbottun, Amon Tobin, plaid, orbital, Legendary Pink Dots, cEvin key, Download, Aphex Twin, FLA etc etc.

I just feed BM3 sounds that i like from any source out there, vts, the youtubez, archive.org, garbage dump sfx. As for FX i use Eos2 for reverb, Fac Chorus and then the usual manglers like Turnado, Effectrix etc. Zeeon and Mood are the only awesome sounding AU synths I have found. I won't bother with IAA synths much anymore with the exception of maybe TC11 and Synthscaper. A very simple no sweat setup now has emerged.

Don't throw away that desktop! Just use it for dumping sounds to BM3. Oh did I mention BM3?

I spend most of my music time on the couch. Having an iphone or second cheap ipad (other apps youtube etc) to sample into BM3 is awesome. A nice goose neck stand clamped to a table is awesome. https://www.amazon.ca/Tryone-Gooseneck-Nintendo-Samsung-Overall/dp/B01HJ6RGJK/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_147_bs_t_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=8CTFDZ1DRVXCSA45YT50

But yah... BM3, BM3, BM3, it is the king, particularly for what it sounds like you want to make. I have been using it since it's release and it gets better and better with amazing updates. So awesome. At some point I may use Auria pro for mastering or just export to desktop for that. But easily 80% can be done painlessly for me in BM3. Ahhh BM3... prrrr prrrr... prrrr... and prrr...

  • Well if your use to Reaper, Cubasis and Auria Pro are not that much different. You load your instruments as either AU or IAA and start recording audio and midi tracks. You can then mix your tracks and add effects . Aum is basically the mixer section of a DAW but it allow you to have multiple instruments running and is great for jamming and recording the jam. Not so great for arranging and tweaking the recorded output unless your route it to a DAW. You may also want to add some all-inclusive type apps like Caustic and your already have Gadget. You can do complete electronic productions in these apps.

And of course you can also use AudioBus to load and record most of your AudioBus enabled music apps.
Go on youtube and search for Haq Attaq he has numerous videos on ios apps and workflows.

  • If you want to get going quickly, probably best to just do a couple f tunes from start to finish in either Garageband or Gadget.

Then you can spend a little time with Auria, BM3, and Cubasis and see which fits your workflow preferences the best. they're all good, but pretty different from each other. Personally I like to use BM3 as a sampler, and Auria as my DAW but there are as many workflows as there are musicians here, and everyone has their own preferences.

Either way, you can definitely complete songs using iOS alone, many of us do this on a regular basis, but getting started in Gadget or Garageband is probably the simplest introduction IMO.

  • And groovebox, blocswave and launchpad (or garageband live loops) as new workflow possibilities to discover!

I am going the easy way. Just GarageBand, plus AU Plugins Noise and Poison 202.
Super easy workflow, but of course more limited compared to what can be done with all the other apps.
Tons of other apps are installed, I just play with them for fun, not for recording a song.

  • Beatmaker 3 for creating. I’d try using apps in AUv3 mode. Check out the scenes view in BM3 and look into automation as well since you’re in EDM

You made some good choices on what you picked up. Tip one would be to stop buying more apps ;) What you have should keep you busy for a long time! Check out thesoundtestroom and Jacob Haq on you tube, you can learn a lot in a short amount of time from their videos.

I would start with gadget as it should be very easy to pick up since you're already familiar with using a DAW. You can easily create finished songs without having to dive into audiobus/IAA/au and how to connect separate apps and recall them etc. There is a fairly comprehensive video on YouTube that explains gadget from top to bottom.

It's worth investing in the official Apple camera connection kit and a cheap controller, the Korg nano series can be found for almost nothing second hand.

Welcome to the world of iOS music making!

  • I could totally help you out, but you're gonna have to send me your iPad and pin number to login to it. >:)

  • Seriously though, you have already found this forum so you are in good shape. Try to read as many of the posts as you can because there is always some good bits of knowledge hidden in unsuspecting threads. Also try to ask more specific questions when you get stumped. The members here are active and generous.

You have probably been watching Youtube's tutorials and demos already, but it is the primary place I go for information. Also try to read all of the manuals for the apps that have them.

My main hurdle when I was new to iOS was trying to figure out how to work without a normal file system. Once I got used to that, the problem was trying to figure out the different ways apps can connect together. And keep your desktop handy because you will probably need iTunes or some equivalent to access your files at some point.

This is excellent advice. Gadget is a blast and will keep you well occupied. But the you'll want to move on from the closed system.

I'd recommend setting up AUM with StepPolyArp playing a loop, find a nice loop in Patterning, and then extemporize on another synth. I'll hunt down a basic AUM setup, but essentially you can record all your stems. (Note! Name your project right away in AUM, and then the stems will be automatically foldered and named in the AUM folder, as well as in AudioShare, which is probably the only indespensible app you own.)

Finally, do not watch any Fabfilter demos for Auria Pro. There lies the way to poverty.

While I love the rest of Sugarbytes apps, getting a refund on Thesys might before the time window closes might be another tip! The controls are so tiny that it's almost impossible to use many of the features, maybe it's better on the 12.9 inch screens?

Having a bit of spare Apple money from a refund is never a bad thing for when that shiny new thing arrives that's impossible to resist :)

Another good idea for later is picking up an old iPhone 4s (assuming you don't have an iPhone already) for cheap to have audiobus remote on there. If you can find one with a broken microphone or headphone jack the price will be very low! That will add a lot of usability to an iOS music setup

Switching foreground apps remotely via Bluetooth , handy if your midi controller is not near your iPad. Many apps have remote triggers so you can control parameters of background apps from the phone while using your other hand to tweak whatever is onscreen on the second device.

It can be fun to let someone use the iPad and mess with their head by switching patches and apps from across the room :)

I did advise you to stop buying apps, then I realised you don't have ElasticDrums :) Now is a great time to pick it up since the sample import feature is on sale. If you're missing FL Studio this will ease your pain a lot and it's regularly getting new and better features!

It took me a good ten minutes to find the in app shop on there, was well worth it for me. The developer has lots of short videos on YouTube that show what the app can do.

OK so I will try BM3.

KMFDM sucks, it’s made by machines cuz they don’t make mistakes. ;)

    Awesome.
