MidiGuitar + MidiBand or similar?

Does anyone who plays guitar test the MidiGuitar app with some midi beats like MidiBand?

Comments

  • I have Midiband but not midiguitar. Midiband is great for triggering midibeats in realtime like different variations, fills, and stuff! I found it so awesome with sending its midi output to Groovebox, to build countless loops from free web midi styles!

So the idea would be to use MidiGuitar as a midi controller for MidiBand, using the sound of a guitar to perform familiar music rhythms without the need for monotonous backing tracks. Does it work well?

  • it would be too good for us guitar players ;)

  • another option would be to shoot with a foot midi controller the chords previously configured with NaviChord sending to MidiBand to generate the rhythm. I do not have MidiBand to test, but NaviChord works great this way, leaving the hands free to improvise on the beat.

  • I really couldn’t begin to know how you would use that with Midiband. But i think i get your idea. You want to control different sounds in the Midiband app that are playing back while the drumbeat plays. But i don’t think you can do that since the midi style has already canned midi clips playing.

What I do, is use Navichord to send the chord data to Midiband so changes the chords in realtime as Navichord drives Midiband. But, It’s still work in progress as some midi styles need tweaking. I can’t wait for Xequencer to get midi file input so i can edit the midi files on the iphone. Haven’t used Cubasis for midi editing on iPad but will try soon.

In Midiband i mute all the midi channels and only enable the ones that I want to hear, like Bass, Drums and perhaps backing guitar. Usually all those are on track 10, 11 and 14 on all midi styles. Then Navichord sends chord data into midiband. I change variations or fills with Navichord’s onscreen keyboard. Usually the melody i will do after all the midi is recorded into Cubasis. If you google Yamaha Midi styles on the net you’ll find tons of free available ones. Some need tweaking but some work great right off the bat.

  • The idea is to play the guitar live with MidiBand accompaniment in real time controlled by midi foot controller. Maybe I would convert the midi files into sty and do the trigger through MidiGuitar (string sound) or NaviChord (foot pedal).

  • Midiband into either Roland SC or Bs16i works perfectly on those midi style .sty files that are configured properly. Midiband converts those to .mib though, which is okay since you can then tweak them internally in Midiband. I still do not really understand the concept of changing the presets but once you do, you can edit the internal presets for each style and rename the Midiband style and save it by emailing it to yourself.

  • Sound Canvas vs Bismark bs16i? Stability vs Quality

  • Created a short video to show Midiband sending midi directly into Cubasis and playing its internal soft instruments like drums, and Bass, didn’t get the other sounds going since ran out of time. But it gives you an idea of how fast you can build a song with creating backing tracks so quickly inside Cubasis via Midiband. Let me know if you’d like a copy of the Midistyle to load up in Midiband.

Oh, since there’s a bug in IOS 11 screen recording I couldn’t switch to Midiband since it would stop the audio recording. But I created a midi track inside Cubasis actually channel 4 on the video and this is a controller channel to send Midiband the signals via midi to chance rhythm variations from 1-4 or do fills or endings.

You can also see how Cubasis was recording the midi realtime as Midiband created it. I mean this Midiband app has tons of potential.

Wow very nice. Taking the practice should be very fast indeed. I'm studying if it makes up for the fight because I've been kind of lazy lately. Maybe cutting backing tracks is less stressful. Thinking. ;)

  • What I really like about this kind of app is that you record only the midi output all at once into your DAW. Then after the fact, you can go and change Synths and even use AUv3 synths, add your leads or even acoustic instruments. You can also do midi edits and stuff.

There are practically hundreds of styles in practally every genre so it’s a never ending source of loops, midi or audio.

I prefer midi as it doesn’t fill up your iPad.

You might look at voxkit for this.

  • What is the difference between MidiBand and MidiXpress? They are from the same developer and the second one seems more complete, though free. I am sure?

The difference between the two is described in the app store description of xpress.

  • Has anyone been able to trigger the start / stop in Midiband via midi control?

Instead of starting the accompaniment right away with the Play button, you can Arm the MidiBand app using the small red light button at the bottom. When the app is armed, its screen color changes to red; the accompaniment starts the moment a first three-note chord is played on the keyboard.

  • That’s what I get for not reading the manual :D
No wonder it Auto started when Navichord sent it chords but it’s not always the case. Are you setting up a specific split point in settings?

I just bought the app. I am still learning to send sty and midis files by email rsrs

  • There’s a lot of great sites with free Yamaha style files. If you find any you wanna share it need let us know. :)

  • I need someone to teach me how to configure navichord with midiband :/

  • Forgot to ask are you using external midi keyboard or via another IOS controller app?
Me, I’m using both but on the go, I use Navichord since it has pads plus an onscreen keyboard which can send midi via a completely different selectable midi channel. I set it at channel 2 so you can press notes to trigger the section changes.

Navichord and MidiBand are not talking. Any tips for setting the two?
