Pharell Williams joins Roli (+ soundpack)
We’re happy to reveal that he’s Chief Creative Officer at ROLI — helping us co-design the next generation of music creation devices. The Seaboard and BLOCKS are just the beginning of our long-term mission to create digitally connected, beautifully designed instruments that open up music creation to everyone. Pharrell will be by our side as we enter the next stage.

Like Ashton Kutcher was Chief Creative Officer at that tablet brand I forgot the name of?
If it means more sound packs for Noise AU then yeah it’s coolio.
Lol, Noise and Syntronik got deleted after residing on my iPad for about 10 minutes...
Regarding Mr. Kutcher, He was briefly a 'front face' for Nikon in the US and sales plummeted like mad...
3 dum sound kits, 3 melodic sounds from the tune Happy.
And it's for free.
Get what you pay for.
And sometimes less.
I love the app itself.
But I refuse to buy the absurdly priced "artist"packs.
$7........nope
Developers work way to hard for $5 apps. I ain't giving Aoki or some other no name electronic "artist" who fits some social profile my money my hard earned money for some samples they did near nothing to "Create"
yes in pissy mood this second.
Anyway, I worked on a single project with P Williams at his Miami studio in the design district years back. It was prior to one WMC and for a Mercedes promo or something like that. It was a cool experience.
Mhhh.....sounds they go further into consumer land.
Roli drifts away for me.....like Apple
It’s not even the extra dollars that bother me, it’s the usage limitations on almost all artist packs. I buy a lot of Novation sound packs, but won’t touch those I am barred from using commercially....even though I’ve paid for it. When I buy other samples, I’m licensed to use them.
Are the Noise artist packs commercially restricted?
I don’t know. If not, then that would be a pleasant surprise.

A 10 sentence explanation would be better.
Especially for non native speakers.
But I assume it means that the content may be used and songs with it published
>
Yes.
On the store page it is unclear whether the Pharell pack can be used commercially, or not. Or even if compositions that include its sounds can be made public. Does anyone know what the rules are?
Novation artist packs all have a clear limitation, meaning you can play with them but not use them in your own projects commercially without agreement.
Most of us, of course, won’t be signing deals. But the thought of samples that cannot be used in that way even after purchase turns me off.
Seems he also promotes a denim clothes by a brand called G-Star. Which means gangsta, weird and agressive brandname because it means gangsta and Pharell's music isn't really of that type.
Getting OT but G-Star is urban fashion (quite fashionable actually, though pricey) that is hardly aggressive gang-related wear. The "G" stands for "Gap" but they had to change it due to another company with that name.
Thank you.
The Pharell pack is for free if you have a Seaboard...as I have since yesterday !! (I’m happyyyyyy)
Congrats for the Seaboard. Did you order directly from ROLI?
Mine hasn't arrived yet, but the Pharrell sound pack was free for me, too.
the Pharrell sound pack was free for me, too.
But are you legally fre to use this in your own compositions, without paying copyright?
No, I find it directly in a general electronic dealer. Apparently, you can find the Roli everywhere (at least here in Switzerland) and they have a lot of stocks...which is good...or not
>
If you were to recreate the original happy song and publish, well of course not.
I see no problem using the "common sounds", though.
If it's very important for you to know, you'd have to ask ROLI support,
It’s not important at all.
I have hundreds of samples from companies who do make it clear what is permissible. If I have to actually mail Roli to find this out, then I simply won’t bother with any artist related packs.
Well, you can read the terms of use first,
https://roli.com/legal/noise/terms-of-service#yourcontent
Quote from the ROLI software license agreement
"v. create musical works using the Software and ROLI Hardware, and perform and distribute such musical works, as applicable."
>
Good-oh, thanks for clearing that up.
You probably got it right, though if I do a search in the Urban Dictionary I find also tha G-Star stands for Gangsta
https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=G-Star
But if you do a search on a more reliable source (Wikipedia), you'll find that they're a Dutch company and not very "gangsta" at all.
Don't know if Wikipedia is a reliable source, although I did a search and you're right the Dutch Company, it looks like a sort of brand like the Italian clothng company Diesel
Dutch gangsta? It's all marketing anyway :-)
And another free sound pack is out. Called Lemon by N.E.R.D.
Hope they are gonna make all this available for Equator
