Ruismaker and AUM
Hi all!
After the release of the eucledian sequencer Ruismaker I pretty much use it everytime I need a drum sequence. When I load Ruismaker in AUM I want it to be started and stopped by AUM but I haven't managed to do that. I also have future drummer and patterning and they both can be started and stopped by AUM. I have tried all combination of settings for link and midi in for Ruismaker but it still won't work. I'm pretty sure I must do something wrong. Thank you.

I can't answer your question, because I can't get it to work either! Maybe @brambos can come by and shine a little light.
I've got another question that impacts my workflow: If I send a PC message to standalone ReSlice, the app responds to the message and loads the sample and arp that are saved in the preset. However, if I load ReSlice as an AU in AUM and send the same PC message, it doesn't work. @j_liljedahl Is this a limitation of AU's in general or AUM more specifically?
It is not just Brambos apps, I can't get Aum to start/stop Quantum either. I am not sure how to configure the setup to do it. I believe Link does not do this, but IAA has transport controls to do it, but it is different from midi sync. I don't really know though.
Any help on this topic is greatly appreciated!
Since link and midi clock cannot be together try disavbling AL
Works fine here, by sending midi clock to Ruismaker from AUM. AL not enabled.
As stated, make sure Link is disabled
thank you it kind of worked, after disabling AL and activating midi clock send, but not exactly the way I expected. Ruismaker starts after pressing the rewind button. So first I have to press the start button and the the rewind button in AUM.
The problem is that other instruments would start after pressing the start button but the brambos apps starts after pressing rewind.
My mistake. If I press rewind before play it will all start at the same time. I have no problem with pressing rewind before play. Thanks
It should also work without the rewind, though. I guess it is because my apps align with the current beatphase (i.e. just like Ableton Link) and only start playing on the first beat of a measure. The rewind makes sure you always start on the first beat.
AUM sends standard host sync to all hosted AU plugins and IAA nodes. It's up to the developer of these to implement support for it
I recommend trying to avoid MIDI clock unless really needed.. IAA/AU host sync is the most complete and accurate method, Ableton Link is awesome and great for jamming between devices on the same network (and when start/stop is not needed), MIDI clock is good when needing to sync external hardware.
There's nothing in the code that prevents program change messages to reach AU's. I just checked and logged the MIDI messages, and indeed all is delivered to the AU as expected, including program change messages.
Ah, yes, I can see now that I have one AU that implements PC messages correctly: Poison-202. Every other AU I have neglects this, probably because the assumption is that the AU state is saved in the host preset? That would work, I guess, if the host itself responded to PC messages to change presets/sessions.
Sure, AU state is saved in the host project. (At least that's what's expected). MIDI program change might still be usable though, for example to switch presets in one or more effect plugins from a MIDI controller while playing live, etc..
Ok. I think I have it sorted now. It is crazy, AUM is doing all 3 at once it seems. I have a setup working with Sector, Quantum driving DXi, and iKaossilator. I can hit play/stop and Sector works great with IAA host sync. I can get Quantum to play/stop if I enable MIDI clock after tweaking the settings in Quantum to respond. Then I can still enable Link in AUM and iKaossilator starts at the beginning of the measure when I hit play in that app. And once Link is going, AUM starts the MIDI and IAA synced apps at the start of the measure as well when I play/stop in AUM. Pretty amazing, I must say.
What’s the secret to getting Quantum to respond to play/stop in AUM? I’ve been trying to get that to work also, no luck.
Honestly, I tried to remember and had no luck either. I just use Audiobus and Link to start apps synchronously now.
Thanks. Heard there was an interface redesign coming.. maybe this will get sorted out too.. AUv3 would be nice.
@_mwallace Here ya go. I was dorking around trying to control AUM with the Midifire Clock module, and I sort of remembered how to do the Quantum to AUM thing. Poked around a bit, and got it working again.
How to control AUM’s transport from Quantum
In Quantum, go into Devices.

In Devices, on the Midi Output page, enable Quantum at the bottom. Also enable Send Midi Clock.

Still in Quantum, go into Options. Make Quantum the Master, and enable the other 2 settings that are circled in the screenshot. Then open the System Settings by hitting the grey gear near the upper right.

In System Settings for Quantum, enable the setting for AUM Transport that I circled.

Now in AUM Midi Matrix, connect Quantum output to Midi Control input.

In the Midi Control Settings in AUM, set Receive MMC to yes. Select the control for Toggle Play, and in the bottom area set the Channel to 1. AUM transport is now controlled by Quantum transport.

The cool thing is both apps can still use Link. In Quantum, the individual sequencer racks have to be set to sync to Link. Otherwise they start playing in the pre-roll section. In Setup, you can enable each rack to sync to Link by setting them to Phase. This will start them on beat 1, not in the pre-roll section.

Awesome, thanks so much!! Followed your steps and it’s now working great! I was very close, only a couple settings off. Haha. And I was trying to trigger Quantum by hitting play in AUM.. didn’t think to try it the other way around.
