Getting a good jazz drum sound

I have some real nice MIDI drum loops that I want to use. I got them to play in Cubasis and they sound okay with the stock Cubasis jazz kit, but I want a better sound. What's the best way to go about this for a cheapskate who lacks much technical skill (and patience) with engineering? I have Soft Drummer and Ton too. I've been wanting to buy Patterning next time it goes on sale.

If I got some drum samples is there a relatively simple way to get them into Cubasis and replace the stock kits in there?

Comments

  • I added some reverb and a parallel EQed-compressed track, and now that stock Cubasis jazz kit is sounding pretty good. Moral: Better to develop skills with the tools you have than to be constantly collecting new tools.

  • Drum Perfect Pro would be my choice (I don't have Cubasis).

    This.

Find a record that just sounds as you want yours to. Analyze its sonic qualities and how it differs from yours and viceversa. Do some research on how it was presumably recorded(how many mics/tracks/busses, which effects were probably used).

Try to find out if your samples are compatible sources. A tight kick won't ever be a loose one, no matter how you process it

Here are some examples of what can be done with DrumPerfect Pro ( using the Jazz session1 pack )

DPP can be loaded as IAA inside Cubasis or midi files can be imported easily in DPP. However the Jazz kit might need some remapping if external midi drum loops are used. DPP is a very advanced virtual drummer, therefore there will be a learning curve in order to program Jazz patterns. Better using the many patterns provided in the pack as a starting point.

  • Both our very own JRSIV and Sounds of Israel have some fantastic sounding jazz kits available in Patterning.

Very nice! Did I mention I'm a cheapskate? I will put this one on my list for when it goes on sale.

  • I'm a cheapskate too but I think DPP is good value. I hope development of this app continues.

    Wow Dude...this sounds sick!

Is this played in live, or programmed in, or an example of the machine's AI?

Seriously? That's incredible in and of itself.

Hard to argue with the sound of these DPP examples. Man, Oh Manischewitz! Until then, pointing yer MIDI at Soft Drummer is likely your best best.

  • One of the best things with DPP is putting all those little flams/ghost hits on a probability too, at least if you are going for the "real" drummer sound. You don't even need that many patterns if you plan the probability, even in chains (hit B only happens if hit A actually happened, which has a 17% chance of happening at all etc). When you start building up your patterns you often realise a repeated pattern rarely sounds repeated. :)

Little disheartening. I do not have that programming skill and have little interest in developing it. Fortunately I have found some good midi loops.

  • DPP already comes with some jazz patterns included.
