Okay, I'm finally purchasing. Which version is better? 12.9 A9X or 10.5 A10X ?

Hello, I'm finally going to purchase one, right now both are the same price on the used market, around 500$. Is the A10X a significant stronger then A9X?

I want to draw as well, so the 12.9 big screen is nice, but the 10.5 is still pretty big, but it also has apples new A10X chip. Has anybody tried benching their projects with a A9X and A10x? I heard A10X is like 90% stronger then A9X cause they added more processor cores or sumtn?

  • A10X at least 30% faster for single core usage and better for multicore apparently

I need to replace my 9.7 Pro which has gone bad in a big way (spontaneous reboots, weird graphic glitches, refusal to restart after hard reset, etc) so I’m considering the 10.5 even though a new model is due next year.

You’ve nudged me to check the used market actually, I was only considering new.

    10.5 a11x
Atleast that is what I'm waiting for.

  • 10.5 has still this crackle bug, although it should be solved with the next update if I unstand it correctly. If you're going for a 10.5 I would wait for 11.1 update and see if the cracle bug is really solved.
The 10.5 has btw also a better screen and comes standard with 64GB instead of the 12.9 32GB

  • I’d personally go with a10x even if I had to sacrifice a little screen space , but it all depends on what means more to you — more screen space, or quite a bit faster cpu/gpu and more future proof.

I have the 12.9 A10x , which can be fairly uncomfortable to hold for extended periods of time when its in a third party case that weighs nearly as much as the unit itself.. I usually just use it sitting on my lap so the weight isn’t that big of a hindrance to me. , but I prefer my 9.7 ipad for when I’m holding it up, reading a book for long period of time.

The a9x won’t be able to process quite as many simultaneous instruments & effects as a10x, if you’re one of the edge cases who likes to push ipad music creation to its limits w/ very large number of tracks. Its not going to make that big of a difference for the average use-case, though — and you can always get around limitations by freezing tracks/etc.

  • Get the 10.5. Everyone complains about the crackling, but honestly I’ve left sequencing running all day and it sometimes shows up. I think it’s app specific. Whenever it does happen I just unplug headphone cable and plug it back in and all is good.

Apple is aware of issue and fix should be here soon from sounds of it.

The 10.5 hits that sweet sport of size and perf imho.

  • 10.5 is the bees knees BUT for drawing with pencil it feels a bit cramped. I’ll probably gor for the 12.9 next time. If,drawing isn’t main focus 10.5 is awesome.
The tech issues have been a pain in the ass but seems to be sorted now with the impending official update.

  • The 10.5 has about 80% more CPU power than the iPad Pros 1st generation.
Look at the benchmark single core and multi core.

But finally, it is your personal use case, that triggers the descision. Screen size or more power...

  • I've had both. Definitely go for the 10X because it's noticeably faster. The 12.9 is better for complicated synths that have a high density of controls. Also better for art with the Apple Pencil, which is fantastic.

  • 10.5 A10X - no crackling here.

  • 10.5 here, no crackling either.

  • 10.5 as well, no crackling or latency.

  • I have the 12.9 mark 1.

I have never regretted buying it. I love the size. It’s perfect.
It’s also still very powerful

But I wouldn’t consider 12.9 for games. To Big to hold.

  • Another great thing about 12.9” is if you use sheet music it’s nearly A4 so written sheet music fits perfectly and is as easy to read as printed to A4.

The latency for me was solved by using 48k audio rate, no biggie IMO since the back-and-forth projects I do usually start in 48k. Have not had any crackling or other issues since owning a 10.5. I was leery given all the complaints, but by god I wanted it and I’m happy I went for it. Major upgrade from Air 2.

I vote the new 10.5 by far. The 12.9 just feels unwieldy.
