MIDI Quest for iOS Lands
Atari, then Amiga, then DOS, then Mac, then Windows... and finally, iOS. SOS reviewed v4 on Windows 3.1 in 1995!
https://itunes.apple.com/app/id1271850367
Supported instruments list is impressive as hell. http://www.squest.com/Products/MidiQuest_iPad/Instruments.html Alas, each looks to be a separate IAP. From spot checking them there on the site, prices seem to range all over the place, depending on the instrument. Alpha Juno 1 is $29, Wavestation SR is $79 and the Kurzweil K2000 is $129!
Maybe there's a reasonable 'all' IAP, I'm not sure as I haven't actually downloaded it yet. The desktop 'All' version is $250 for ~700 instruments. MIDI Quest essentials has fewer generators and is slightly lesser in other ways but includes all instruments for $150 (comparison).
Looks like they all work in some sort of Demo mode until purchased so hopefully one can at least get a decent test. Wonder if the prices will come down normal(ish) app store levels eventually.

Grabbed it. Not ready for prime time. I can get it to bring up the midi output monitor (but only if it's in portrait mode) and that's about it. Open brings up an empty 'studio' screen, which makes sense since I haven't saved anything. Hitting the plus sign to add an instrument just hangs. Will keep my eye on it.
Edit: it wasn't hanging. It just took 4-5 minutes to bring up the big-ass-list. Tapped 'Add' for the WavestationSR and now it looks like it's hanging again.
... and loaded after 2-3 minutes. Would be awful if this is the regular experience. Hopefully it's all just being cached. Bad enough as is.
Don't mind my live blog here...
Mmmk. Well, can't load the WavestationSR editor on my Air 1. Error comes up saying this instrument requires an iPad with a minimum of 2GB of RAM. Perhaps more popular instruments are 'optimized for iPad'?
App also requires 9.3 so apparently it's not the kind of thing you could run on an old iPad to manage your hardware. Shame.
Ok, let's try another synth. This time, hitting Add (+) offers two options: Add Instrument and Install Instrument. Add brings up the Wavestation (that I can't use) instantly. Install==another 3 minute wait.
Tapped the Akai MB76—a very 7x6 simple MIDI line mixer. Nothing like the sysex complexity of something like the WS. Still took ~3 minutes to install. Sigh. This one at least worked. Tapped the $ on the toolbar to see how much it cost but nothing came up.
On to the Roland Alpha Juno 1. The 'Install' list seemed to come up a little quicker this time. Maybe two minutes. Install took more like three minutes again though (also a fairly simple synthesizer). This one also worked fine on the Air 1.
You can zoom in on the controls pretty easily. Adjusting can be a little finicky but not nearly as bad as I expected. Graphical envelope editing.
Demo warning finally came up: you can adjust up to 8 parameters in demo mode. Warning said "Purchase this instrument in the Studio mode." Which I can't find.
I assume it's the big dollar sign in the toolbar but it doesn't do anything.
Looks like it supports Bluetooth MIDI.
Quick Tips button in the top menu is specific the MIDI/sysex quirks of the instrument you're editing. Very cool. This is where the "30 years doing this" is a benefit.
MIDI port/channel per instrument. Good.
No sign of an 'All' IAP just yet.
250 page manual is up. http://soundquest.org/Downloads/MidiQuesti12/IOSManual.pdf Yes, the $ is how you purchase. Maybe I should have waited 10 minutes? ;p
Will check in with it again next week and see if these are just launch/network bugs.

No use for this app but watching this space nonetheless.
Nice it has a template for yamaha cs6x. Gotta check it out later, midi designer has a template for it, but the app resets when you switch apps, which makes it unuseable..
@ToMess If this ever gets around to working, it will be quite different MD. Indeed, MD may always have a better layout for programming it remotely since it's so configurable and makes the most of the iPad screen whereas the editors in MQ appear to be ported from mouselandia. That said, MQ comes with a full bi-directional librarian (rename, tag, move patches...) and various 'patch morphers' to morph between to (or more) sets of presets. And the ability to copy and paste sections of a patch (grab the envelopes from one patch, paste it into another...). And, well, loads of stuff. 30 year old app. Sadly, at the moment, it's just feeling old!
maybe when it gets to IOS prices I might consider....
Are you certain you can't get the monitor up in landscape mode. The vast majority of Midi Quest's testing was done in landscape mode and the monitor is used daily here.
How would you like to see MQ make better use of the screen? You can bring sidebar views in and out so the entire screen can be used if you want, the editors can be scaled and scrolled if you want to concentrate on a particular part of the editor. MidiQuesti has access to the Patch Zone which currently has about 180,000 unique patches (availability of patches varies hugely from no patches for some instrument to 28,000 unique patches for Yamaha 6-op synths).
One other note, when listing or installing instruments, Midi Quest is doing this live with the server. The main factor in how long this takes will be the speed of your internet connection. At our location on the west coast, communicating with the servers on the east coast, all of the instruments are listed in under 10 seconds. Obviously, I don't know where you are located but if you are in North America, you should be able to get a list much faster than you are.
I couldn't but sounds like enough things have been fixed that I'll give it a shot again.
I have a high speed internet connection in Portland Oregon. It was nothing like 10 seconds for me.
Slovakia, Central Europe.. list opened after probably 2-3 seconds, Wavestation SR loading time not more than 10 sec..
but then i tried Korg Karma and even after 2 minutes still not loaded
My connection is 300 MBit down, 2-3 ms ping (very stable connection - optic fibre, top quality wifi router) so i don’t think problem it’s on my side (10 minutes ago i downloaded 1.4 GB movie and it tooks less than 2 minutes
)
The Karma is one of the larger files but it is only 1.5MB. I just tried it and it took under 2 seconds. Midi Quest will put some progress information in the monitor view, particularly if there is a failure so you might want to try opening it, trying again, and see if there are any warning messages.
that's good idea
but wondering .. why 1.5 MB definition file needs 2GB of memory to run ? Guys you should definitely look at code optimalization, it is unacceptable that "just" midi editor needs 2 GB of memory to run control surface which just basically sends and received (relative) little amount data ..
there are complete DAW's capable of audio multitrack playback which don't needs devices with 2 GB of memory ...
With the current version of MidiQuesti, there is only one editor which requires more than 1GB of memory to run and that is the Kronos. The main consumer of memory has got nothing to do with the definition file or the code or SysEx storage, it is the memory allocated by the system for video display.
If you have an editor telling you that there is a 2MB memory requirement, that editor is out of date. Re-install the editor and it would probably be smart to restart Midi Quest. That will address it.
and purely for historical accuracy, the order actually was: Amiga, DOS, Atari, Mac, Windows, and iPad
Blimey!...... Released on Atari & Amiga?.......... Will someone make an Amiga Octa MED SoundsStudio tracker for iOS? ........ With Unlimited tracker Channels so that you can use AU Units midi sequence(& Audio if poss?)...... Also reocords Automation........ Please!....... Anyone?......... @brambos?(add this way of sequencing)......... Had this on my Amiga & PC.......
