"In Fathoms" Groovebox, Ableton, OB-6

“In Fathoms” started life as a sketch on my iPad using the Groovebox app by Ampify. It was originally supposed to be a straight up simple techno banger, but after I exported it into Ableton Live for arranging, it took some unexpected twists and turns.

As I started layering sounds from my Dave Smith OB-6 over the previous loops, the track began to both chill out some and gain more energy at the same time. The busy parts of the song were now this psychedelic chilled out jam, while the sparser sections of the arrangement still had that raw techno bruteness to them. I liked that play in energies a lot, and the way the song leads you to places you maybe didn’t expect at first.

Groovebox provided all the drums, basslines, and rhythmic background synths, while the OB-6 handled all the melodies, drones, fills and builds. Arranged, mixed, and mastered in Ableton Live using DMG’s Limitless.
