Recommendations for Audio Units Synths

I'm in the market to add to my collection of audio units synths.
At the moment I have iSEM, Kaspar, Model 15, Phasemaker, Viking Synth, Beathawk, and FM Essential.

The ones I'm thinking about are
Zeeon
Addictive Pro (Addictive Synth is one of my favorites)
Poison

If you were going to buy one AU synth, which one would it be from this list? Or would it be one that's not on this list?

Thanks!

Comments

  • Zeeon, Mood, and everything from BramBos! would be my recommendation.

  • Any of the newer iceWorks synths are worth conidering, too. It depends what you like, but I would have a tough time choosing between Zeeon and Poison-202.

  • I’d want Zeeon. But you say Addictive Synth is a favourite, so maybe Addictive Pro’s a better choice for you? Ripplemaker’s pretty fantastic, and worth a nod.

Also Wolfgang Palm’s synths are excellent, and mood.

  • Not a true synth but Neo-Soul Keys Studio is my favourite AU. Love Zeeon and Addictive Pro also.

  • ZEEON ALL DAY

  • All great synths but if it’s gotta be one it’s gonna be Zeeon.

  • I’m still not sure about this AU stuff, what it is, how to use it, why to do so, whether I am in fact using it or not, etc. However, people say that iVCS3 is one of those.

  • Try Lorentz.. it’s cheap but powerful

Likely the best synth for trance sounds on iOS

Also korg mono poly, synthscaper, layr

Zeon is not the ultimate lol, it’s just new and another will dominate soon lol

We have too many good synths , Wolfgang palms are good too

In Sweden we say it’s a smörgåsbord of super nice synths to play with...
I would go for the crunchy Poison 202...

  • Zeeon is special. It's on the Olympic finalist stand for Virtual Analog along side Model 15 and iSEM. It's my favorite of your three contenders.

That said, you already have two of the VA finalists (along with the sleeping monster Viking) so my vote is for Addictive Pro.

  • I simply would not have any of those 3 synths in my AU collection. But here’s my take on each:

Zeeon - simply wonderfully sounding synth and probably the best all rounder of the 3. If you could only have one, this is probably the sensible option.

Poison - while I would not put this in the same all round bracket as Zeeon, it can make a Hugh swath of sounds with some work. It really does remind me of some quite modern Roland synths. IMO, it’s strength is really in layering sounds. If you think of the app as a ‘partial’ of those Roland synths of the digital era it all makes sense. Use AU instances to make sound layers that ‘fit’ and it’s one hell of a synth! Just remember that this takes some work and that some may feel a disconnect between each part of the sound working as individual parts in AU.

Addictive Pro - OK this is my bias right here. I love this synth. I can spend hours making lush sounds and just playing about with it! Problem is, the sounds I make with it just don’t ‘fit’ that well with others in songs I find. That’s not to say it can’t make great sounds, or even that it can’t make sounds that fit in some music, I just don’t find myself that I go to it that often beyond just the pure pleasure of sound design. I do find it far more out and out fun to program than the other 2 but not for working in tracks. This one takes work and is fun if you enjoy that.

Zeeon. And it's not just new or some obsession. The modulation matrix in it allows you to reroute the audio signal in really unique and crazy ways that aren't possible in other synths. People just look at the knobs and dont understand there's more to it

  • You can't go wrong with any of the Wolfgang Palm apps. WaveMapper and Infinite are personal favourites!

Addictive Pro is on my to buy list, the 4 part arpeggiator is a great feature in Reslice and it's got the same one.

  • Zeeon is honestly a must have. I use it for nearly all of my synth needs. I also have Phosphor 2, Kaspar and now model 15

  • Zeeon. It compliments Model 15 beautifuly. Mood is my third.

  • Of your list: Zeeon. Most used AUs here: Neo and iSymphonic.

  • Model 15.

    Zeeon.

    Mood.

    You're welcome.

  • The consensus seems to be Zeeon so I'm going with that. One thing I find on this forum is that people go gaga over the latest thing and then they sometimes tire of it and move on. But people have had time to explore Zeeon and it's clear most everybody still holds a very high opinion of it.

It was first on my list anyway, but I wanted to hear what people have to say. What I like about it is that it's relatively simple to program. I can totally get how to do it from my prior experience. But then...there's the modulation matrix, which takes it to a whole other level. If you really explore that, the options are infinite.

I've been doing a lot of music on my PC, so I am totally covered with things like electric pianos and acoustic instruments. When I work on the iPad, I tend to keep it simple. Mostly Gadget and fun stuff like Groovebox and Blocs Wave.

But I'm intrigued by the new Garageband update, and I'm going to explore that. That's why I want to add to my collection of Audio Units synths.

I know I'll get Addictive Pro someday. But I agree with @Fruitbat1919 I will probably spend more time programming it than using it for music. But that's okay.

Thanks so much everybody for your advice and particularly @Love3quency for alerting me to Lorentz, a really exciting synth I wasn't aware of at all.

Still one of the best I reckon but as AU you can only load it as noise or VCO generator I think.

Glad to be of help, Lorentz is really a tough synth for all kinds of harder styles of dance music ( and it’s cheap too )!

Lot's of great suggestions here. Whichever apps you decide to buy, also pickup Roli Noise app for free. It has great free stock sounds and if you want to add there are also more as IAPs. Just stay way from the IAPs that use the SWAM engine as they won't work in AU mode. NOISE by ROLI Ltd.

You can also use iVCS3's Envelope, VCF, Spring Reverb and VCA as AU Effects. The Spring Reverb does more than spring; FDN, Parametric, IR, Hybrid 1, Hybrid 2, FTConvolution and Forwards/Backwards FTConv IR Scanning Mode.

I didn't know any of that. Thank you.

Right. Thanks for clarifying. I was looking at it as a synth in the instrument slot.

  • This is my AU instrument collection so far, minus Viking Synth and Zeeon which arent in view . I have some AU effects as well. I use BM3 as my main Daw, but I also use Auria Pro, Cubasis, Garagband and once in a while Mod Step as my AU host and AUM. Im using Zeeon a lot more than Addictive pro. They both rock but Addictive Pro is a lot more processor hungry on my Air2. Poison is really nice too. I tend to use that over Addictive Pro too because its less CPU hungry. I cant wait to get an Ipad Pro, I hesitate because Ive heard a lot of people having latency and audio distortion, but I hear the new 11.1 fixed those issues?

Your setup is impressive. I remember when the only AU synth was iSEM.

  • Three words, Addictive!

  • Ah, Plectrum, the crown jewel.

  • edited November 2017

Plectrum isn't all that bad - I found the free effect Fiddlicator and those two apps were made for each other. I've gotten some very usable clavinet-like sounds of out of it.

It's limited, sure, but it's free so who cares?
