8 bit hits
Hits that charted, proper music and all that, made with predominantly a sampler that was basically 8 bits. Let’s go!
(Not recent 8-bit covers, not game music, not 8-bit arcade chips, none of that — proper actual records that people went out and bought).
(Yep, we should allow 12-bit samplers too. We draw the line before we get to CD quality though!) but mainly let’s hear it for the ensoniqs, the emulators, the fairlights, the greengates, the dmxes, etc.

Okay, maybe 12 bits - Alison Clarkson put all her early stuff together herself in her bedroom on an Akai S900 or earlier.
Paul Hardcastle - 19

A crapton of the pre-1986 Hip Hop canon was made with 8/12 bit samplers. LM1, LinnDrum and the DMX, SP-1200...
Man, I've loved this since the first time I heard it back in early 80's. Not sure if it 8-bit, but I think it must be because of when it came out.

Wee Papa Girl Rappers - Wee Rule

I just have to say something about your lead off song, E=MC2. Not only have I loved that song since it came out, but my daughter has loved that song her whole life. Strong reaction as a baby and still gets a big lift if I randomly play it when she is around.
It is definitely an important work - a lot must have gone into it at the time. I consider it one of those pieces that gets a bulked-up pressure of statement put into it all at once, from many previous years of scribbling and assortmenting. The follow-up only has a few months or so to get made, by contrast, although, the follow up (Medicine Show) is also very good indeed.
Mel & Kim - Respectable
