GridInstrument + Launchpad = Bliss

Didn't catch any mention on this forum, so I had to post.

If you have a Launchpad (that's compatible with iOS) you gotta get this app!

It adds the Ableton Push-style note modes to the Launchpad that you can MIDI out to any app. AB3 also.

I've used mappings like J74, Nativekontrol, and Launchpad95 on the desktop and finally someone has brought Launchpad note modes to iOS. I begged and begged Novation for years to add this to their apps.

If this had been around 2 years ago I probably wouldn't have spent $150 on a Korg Nanokey Studio.

Wireless and velocity-sensitivity are cool, but the Launchpad Mini is simpler, more ruggedly built, and travels a lot better.

  • It’s good to see the updates are coming thick and fast, I wonder how far they can take it. I’m thinking DAW control next if midi learn opens up on iOS inside DAWs.

  • The launchpad pro's note modes have always worked with iOS. But this is still nice :)

    Wow this sounds great!

Edit: this is pretty great. But I don't see a way to select a single midi channel which is crucial.

Yeah...the LP Pro is the top-tier device and basically a standalone midi keyboard. However I prefer the clicky button feel of the other launchpads, plus the LP Pro can't run bus-powered on iOS which decreases it's portability. The LP Mini is just the perfect travel size.

I have an original launchpad also, so when Novation added native note-mode to the LP Pro I was very temped to upgrade. Eventually I settled on a Ableton Push 1 for much less and bought the Nativekontrol scripts that enables me to use the Push with other DAWs besides Ableton.

Grid-based keyboards are a big shortcut tool in my workflow. I do a lot of remixes and it's so easy these days to use software to determine the musical key of an acapella, bring up the scale on a grid instrument, and then try different progressions and basslines. What used to take an hour now takes like 10 seconds.

  • so is it possible to change channel with the software? i really like grid base controllers too. it's a pity that most done have the velocity range of keyboards tho.

I don't see a option to select midi channel in the app. Someone should ask to developer to add it. For me it doesn't seem like that big of a deal since in most hosts you can usually filter midi input per device, but I guess if you're running multiple midi devices it could get complicated.

maybe a cheaper option for to get a 64. cheers for the info.

Picked this up over the holidays. Gridinstrument now has either a fixed or random (minimum/maximum) Velocity setting as well as a Midi Channel setting.

The launchpad mini's top buttons 1 and 2 shift the octave. Button 8 turns the grid into a key and scale selector as well being able to switch the grid view between Diatonic 4th, Chromatic or Drum Rack.

If one of those button's could change the grid into a midi channel selector instead of having to flip to the settings menu, it'd be darn near perfect.
