what usb audio interface are you using?

seems my Behringer UM2 is a hit-and-miss solution (Audio Codec not supported popping up regularly).

  • a behringer uca-202 and/or a focusrite 8i6. both work wetll

    Steinberg UR-242 - https://steinberg.net/en/products/audio_interfaces/ur_series/models/ur242.html

Works on PC, MAC and IOS. It has 4 inputs which was what attracted me in the first place.

Comes with Cubase AI for PC and Cubasis LE for IOS.

  • is the any difference sound wise on sub £$200 soundcards? i've got a scarlett 6i6 which i've only used briefly and i can't recall noticing any difference. i know recording externals sounds pretty good with the scarlett

  • Akai EIE non Pro. Never let me down, errrr apart from now power socket being playing up at times. That’s my fault though, these things aren’t made for throwing around.

  • UCA-202 good enough for my needs.

how do you connect it to the iPad? i wonder if my passive usb hub is the culprit. but when it works it works ok...
edit: hama 4 port non powered into usb3 cck with iRig Keys 25 and Behringer UM2 connected.

  • Yamaha AG-06 mixer, very flexible little device, low latency, USB battery will power it and surprisingly good built in effects!

I bought it used for a bargain price, these seem to be underrated and zero problems so far using it with iOS and in windows.

depends on your source and monitor system.
For general purpose I use the iCA4+ (iConnectivity), but for quality microphone recording I prefer the Audient ID22, on which I also rely for final mix decisions.
(the ID22 beats the iCA in all analog domains, but think of it as the icing on the cake, the iCA4+ is very usable and has a great functionality)

On sub $300 condensor mics you'd hardly notice any difference anyway - but with dynamic/ribbon microphones it matters a lot.
Similiar for monitors: a pair of small Neumanns (or similiar) and quality cans by AKG, Beyer, Sennheiser, etc is required to reveal an audible difference.

  • i always use headphones (for the neighbours sake) i've got a descent pair of sennheiser- maybe a little on the darkside. i've had Audio Technica, akg, grado too- real treble trumpets for me!
i don't use my soundcard because i'm not using external gear at the moment. i was just surprised i couldn't tell any immediate difference between the scarlett 6i6 and ipad dac. maybe with a longer period of listening i would, or maybe there's no really notable difference at that price range.

I have tried two of these and both have a high pitched beep beep like a reversing noise going on at low level. Have you experienced this ( more obvious in headphones) ?

  • did some further testing. even with the UM2 connected diretcly (via the genuine usb3 cck) i get this Audio Codec issues. seems like the super cheap Behringer is really super cheap... :s

  • behringer umc404hd.Works flawless with very low latency and all ins and outs.

  • does a soundcard even effect latency on an ipad? i got the impression that that it's different to pc's.

  • Anyone tried ROLAND Rubix44?

  • Roland Duo Capture Ex

  • Just got a presonus iTwo
It’s not bad for the price but the knobs suck big time compared to say a Roland, very stiff and sticky.

Simple to use, no CCK and comes with presonus studio1 are the pluses

  • UCA 222 no problems at all.

  • Steinberg UR28M and UR44 both working nicely with IOS, though I use them mostly for my desktop and MS Surface.
Same goes for Novation Audiohub and Behringer UCA222, which i use solely for IOS.

Never had a problem with the knobs on mine. It has the detented gain knobs, but I like those, makes it easier to match both sides.

It not needing a CCK saves you $30. It has the old time midi plugs, which is great, and switches for making the line inputs into guitar inputs.

I use an ica4+ now, because I've lost my mind, but the presonus was good, and inexpensive.

This is good to hear. I've had my eye on this for awhile.

I've been using a UCA-222 for portability or Allen & Heath Zed10FX for flexibility. The 404HD, with MIDI and 4 in/out seems an ideal and affordable alternative.

did also try the older lightning to usb cck and always end up with a "Not supported" or "Device draws too much power" error.

but you do need the Behringer power supply, don't you?

Tascam US-2X2 interface, needs CCK, well under $200, sounds excellent & built to last.

Tascam released another 2 in-2 out interface with iOS recording in mind about 6 months ago. It's called the iXR and it's basically the US-2X2 but with the addition of a direct to device connection, so no CCK is needed. It has traditional MIDI in & out which most interfaces today forego assuming everyone uses USB or wireless MIDI. The old school I/O allows classic synths & older controllers to be used with it. Build qualkity is good and it's well under $200 as well.

  • Scarlett 6i6 first generation. No problems.

I looked tascam us 4x4 which looks great but I need a way to connect several usb midi controllers to it. Do you have any usb midi controllers hooked up to yours? If so do they power ok? Using a usb?

I use one too on my ipad. Got it for 100€ used, i can highly recommend one, especially if you find one used. I also have steinberg ur22 mkii for my iphone, its also a good value for the money.

I'd like to use the UMC404HD with a USB hub powered by a USB battery pack. From what I've read this should work fine but if you need phantom power for condenser mics it may not be. Don't know, I don't have one... yet.
