Yamaha FM Essentials and MX49

edited November 2017 in General App Discussion

My local music store is now selling the Yamaha MX49 and I believe that if a I go into the store with my iPad I can unlock the FM Essentials app by plugging it into the MX49. However, what steps to I go to do this. Will I need a camera connection kit? Please advise.

  • You'll need the CCK and a standard USB A->B cable.

  • To unlock just hook the cables and launch the app and you're done.

Without sounding paranoid when I do this will personal info about my iPad be transferred permanently into the MX49?

The FMEssentials app just checks if an MX V2 is connected using a SysEX handshake and unlocks it.
No personal info is transferred anywhere.

    Cool. Thanks for the advice.

  • You’ll also need to remember to take your CCK with you when you leave.

Does this unlock then work on other iDevices I own or do I need to do this per device? I.e. My iPad Pro and iPad 5th gen (and potentially future iPads I may acquire). Thanks for any insight on this...

Last I heard it’s a per device unlock.

Thanks! I went to the store and did this today.
...and didn' t leave my CCK behind when I left.

  • So how was the mx49?

  • Regarding the MX49/61/88 they are quite neat. They can be used as 'audio/midi-interfaces' on iOS.
Unfortunately the AUX-In is just a bypass and can not be 'recorded' via USB which would be cool for 'sampling' :)

If I was just getting started and din't have a keyboard I'd seriously consider getting one!

Thanks for the advice to my original post. I think I've lost my CCK so I will have to look for it before I go down to my local music store.

Only problem is they only have one in stock (ex demo) so there is a chance it could be sold by the time I get down there to unlock FM Essentials. If I do manage to then I will obviously remember not to leave my CCK behind when I leave.

  • Don't forget to get consent

Obviously, I'm hardly going to walk into my local music store and switch on the MX49 and connect my iPad without asking first.

  • Looks like these snths are discontinued. Wonder if there will be an alternate way to unlock after they all sell out of the stores.

  • As far as I know it's the 'old' MX49 line that is discontinued and replaced with the V2 line that is needed for the unlock.(MX49V2 & 61V2 and the BX88).

    Thanks, good to know.

Nah, I'm just going to Harvey Weinstein it.

  • The V2 line has the fat better Keybed. There’s also a stellar new 88 version.

I just asked if I could try out the synth and then proceeded to have my way with it. ^_^

When I unlock the FM Essentials app on the MX49 will it still be unlocked if (for any reason) I remove the FM Essentials app and reinstall it again?

Nope, you'd have to go to the store and activate it again.

This is partly why I have sent a request to Yamaha to add IAP for unlock but FM Essentials is considered as a 'promo app' so it's highly unlikely it will get an IAP option. I have also suggested that an app such as Cubasis could be used to unlock FM Essentials since Steinberg is owned by Yamaha...

I managed to find my CCK and went to my local music store and fortunately they still had the MX49 so I connected all my iPads and unlocked the app on each iPad. Playing the DX100 bank brought back memories.

I had the same 'flashback' with the TX81z patches.
Wish they had included all 3 factory banks from it though, but hey it's free and the effects are quite nice too :)

The AUv3 is 'crippled by design' as all instances share the same patch.
(I mostly use it to create samples anyway so no biggie).
