iOS 11 and Files app, looking to the future....

I am sitting here hoping and praying some day I will be able to hook my Octatrack up to my iPad via USB and CCK and load samples into it in this way. Currently i just directly sample audio in and while it does work, id love to be able to manage my samples and tweak them in BM3 , then load straight into OT.

huh, external hardware supporting 'Files'... nice idea!

  • Or maybe some creative coder who manages to bake in standard mass-storage support into a Files.app extension?

Don't know if this is do-able but if I'm not mistaken Files.app has an option for plug-in extensions that was very briefly mentioned at WWDC'17...

I'm still hoping Sandisk will update their iXpand-app with Files.app support so can directly access my iXpand drive using the Files.app...

  • I’m hoping that the move to APFS (Apple File System) paves the way towards removable storage in iOS 12

Makes sense that eventually there would be an uber OS to rule all of Apple products.

  • I hope too. But isn't storage space upgrades where Apple makes crazy profits?

  • All Apple needs to do is let Files app support standard USB mass storage over the USB lightning adapter. Not likely I suppose.

That would cut into their exhorbitantly overpriced higher storage device sales. Let’s be real about why they don’t support micro sd cards or direct access to usb storage. It ain’t to protect us from viruses.

  • I think it could be more about not having to ‘eject’ the disk before unplugging like on a Mac (risk of data loss)

  • Snaps. Im gonna try hooking my OT up to my Kingston Mobilelite tommorow

You can use Wi-Fi drives in the Files app now. Or if you have a router with a USB port that takes an external drive and puts it on the network, that works too. I wrote it up.

    Works inside GarageBand 2.3 too.

    Thank you!

  • This is one of the reasons I keep the Readle Documents app installed as it supports many network protocols.
I can easily pull files from my NAS when needed using the standard Files.app/Document Picker under iOS11.

  • GoodReader is another good app for this kind of stuff
