  • I still think just put some ads in your videos and your income will increase immediately. Nobody likes them but it's the obvious thing to do in your situation. All the best, Doug!

  • Great idea! I wouldn’t mind watching them if it helps Sir Doug!

Also does it help you Doug if we watch the entire add before your videos play?
Will that pay you more and if also click on them?

Be careful with the ads though. If the YouTube algorithm detects a higher than average click through rate it could jeopardize the ability to monetize the channel.

Doug, you said the key in your video - Patreon is not a donation, it's a way of paying you for your WORK, which is excellent. Your work is very helpful in making informed choices.

    Yep.

  • It may be a good thing for both Doug and the guys from Sonic State when they would work together. Sonic State does have his residence in Bath, not that far away from Cornwall.

Sonic State does merely hardware synths and Doug merely iOS synths. So they could complement each other well.

This current social worker here in the state sort of agrees, depending on the situation. Depends if you mean social workers (I'm an LCSW) or social service workers, which would be the bureaucracy, big difference. Im all for less bureaucracy, and the situation Doug describes happens here a lot to people as well.

I don't want to sidetracked too much, but @MonzoPro, I'm sorry to hear about your son's school situation, that's plain wrong and I hope there is a resolution. That's the area I work in with social work, but with adults, and I am not a big fan of schools' usual approach.

Great idea. There are so many official rip-offs, and false flag charity organisations here in the UK and in the US.

Ordinary people, as shown in the recent hurricanes hitting the US, can be really great and help each other out. Race, social standing, political leaning, none of it mattered.

I feel sure that our little community will rally round, with people doing what they can according to their means, so that Doug, Jo and Watson the Wonder Dog will end the year better off, and looking forward to 2018.

Sure, but the other lot would do nothing to improve things, especially for guys like Doug. All politicians today are scum, and lie constantly. Changing government is pointless when the system is broken by design, as Fruitbat says.

Nasty as the Tories have always been, I recall a Labour government policy which meant my terminally ill mum definitely qualified for a grant to make her bathroom safe for her use. Trouble was, the committee to approve such grants met once a year, then took 6 months to release grants. I asked if I paid in the mean time - via bank loan, had little cash at the time - could I claim it back. No sir, they said, because if I paid the bill I was deemed able to afford it, and my mum’s claim would be tossed. So, we have an example of a ‘caring Labour’ policy clearly designed to stall the claimant, with the intention of as many people as possible dying before they could get a payout.

The same bastards, on both sides, are even more creative these days, unless you are from an approved minority, etc. Doug, as a white man of a certain age, is fucked by the system whatever he tries to do.

Yep, that's why I shared my experience. I had a similar range of income streams to Doug, and over the course of a few months they all dried up. I was actually getting more hits and click-throughs, but Google, the affiliates and a few others decided I was making too much money, and used a range of excuses to stop paying me. And there was nothing I could do about it.

Obviously we can all help out in the short term here, but more ways to monetise the good work Doug does would have a long term benefit, and provide a safety net in case YouTube or the affiliates start mucking him about.

Just to add another perspective here (and as everyone seems to be focusing on unemployment benefits sob stories where reality this is related with the self employment system).

The Working Tax Credit system for self-employed people in the UK is really good!! There are many exceptionally well designed and implemented funding schemes and grants to help all kinds of people launch and develop small businesses of every variety!

I’ve now run a business in the UK and in the Republic Of Ireland, and I can tell that ya that in the UK is a whoooole lot easier to set up and maintain a business.

You receive a good deal of Tax-Credit money if your income is pretty low and your main occupation is self employment, and you’re also entitled to housing benefit and tax reduction! You get audited now and then and if you submit your records and it’s all honest, no problem!

So basically you get a nice income supplement and your overheads are significantly reduced. It’s very easy after that to build up a portfolio of related ventures (“diversify to specialise”) which will alongside the supplement, be a very stable and sustainable income. You’ll get to do all sorts of interesting things centred around your core practice and you’ll be able to take life at your own pace!

In Ireland, guess what.. you get squat, you fend for yourself and you pay your rent from your own pocket. Rent is more than double than in the UK, and for that you’ll get half what you’d get in the UK. I’m not saying that’s bad (well the rent thing is a bit fucked) — there’s also wild opportunity here for those who want to take it. Motivation, positivity and energy levels are extremely high in the workforce here.

In the UK, through my freelance work I knew a lot of self employed people. I can tell you right now that the work ethic there comes from a different universe. There are some reeeeally hard working people of course (actually, most of the hardest working musicians I knew didn’t collect Working Tax Credit) but there were also a whooole lot of people who were just happy to keep expenses low, live a relaxed and flexible life, do a bit of what they’re good at here and there and call themselves a professional [insert trade here] on their tax reports.

I’m not suggesting that everyone should be a fanatic entrepreneur, but I am articulating that self employed people in the UK are extremely lucky to have the opportunity and system in place to facilitate such a flexible and favourable lifestyle while maintaining a high level of self respect and respect in their community. There aren’t many places in this universe where that is possible..

This post isn’t addressing anyone specific, I’m just sharing a bit of perspective, personal experience and an interpretation of the other side of the coin.

  • Yes, that is true, I get some Working Tax Credit to help and also a some Housing Benefit, but that is quiet low and no Council Tax reduction. These are benefits available to everyone in very low income, and it’s a huge help.

If I was not self employed I would get no Tax Credit at all, the Patreon has increased massively over the last day, so with that and You Tube Ad Revenue and the Affiliate token, this is now becoming a very workable business.

The support has been amazing and I can now concentrate on making videos again without as much worry, which is the whole point of what I do.

Just for context I’ll also add this:
I’m also experiencing a related life situation to what a few other people have described — after moving to Ireland with my wife (non EU national, we met on tour and a freelance salary isn’t enough to support a UK spouse visa - so we’re out!), in order to make rent I pushed myself too hard. I took on too many gigs on Upright Bass (there was more demand for it than electric), was playing for hours a day to rent a tiny room outside the city and I developed a tendon injury in my left forearm — it’s been over a year that I can’t play the instrument of my profession and it’s a long way from healing. That’s actually the reason I threw myself so strongly into iOS music — so that I can keep gigging. Here’s a link to a shot that recently went up from one of our more high profile concerts this year!:

We’re doing ok now, ‘slightly’ nicer place (small and cold but private at least and walkable to the city) and we’re surviving. I’m currently reskilling as a Data Scientist (remember that wild opportunity I mentioned..) which is taking 10 hours a day, is fantastically interesting and also brain melting. Believe me, I’m as surprised as you are that a Music Performance MA was considered to be a highly respectable qualification for that field!! We acted quickly to change our direction when I couldn’t play, and because of it our life is becoming slowly more stable — on the up! I’ll work in tech for a while (Google ‘Silicon docks’) then my arm eventually heals I’ll be the most data driven freelance music professional in the world!

    Here’s my desk this morning:

Big difference from what it would have contained this time last year!
The sewing stuff is my wife’s ;)

There are are tax breaks, grants and a weekly payment for anybody currently unemployed starting a 'pre-approved' business in Ireland. The weekly allowance is reduced during the second year to 75% of regular unemployment allowance, you keep any rent supplements, medical card, heating allowances that you already qualify for.

Unfortunately like the back to education schemes, you have to spend a fairly long time (9 months at the moment) unemployed before you can get access. There is a cut down version of this scheme you can use immediately once you become officially unemployed but the payments are for less than a year and there are no tax breaks or grants. Once you have been operating for 2 years and can show a reasonably consistent income there are some other harder to find grants and micro financing you become eligible for.

If your business is related to audio/music, there are a few state and EU funded projects and opportunities that are not advertised very openly. Send me a message if you're interested in more information.

Rent is crazy at the moment and showing no signs of improvement until our next property bubble economic meltdown. Shouldn't be long to wait since Irish politicians are highly skilled at making bad situations worse!

  • @OscarSouth thank you for sharing your experiences of trying to be an independent business person and musician in the context of the UK versus Ireland. The ability to respond to a changing environment seems to be vital. I hope your arm fully recovers so you can play the bass again.

  • Looks like this thread has helped Doug on patreon, I can spare a few euros tomorrow. Is it a monthly subscription (iTunes is destroying me with these) or can I just donate if I have some extra coins?

    Haha, too true.
Now that we’re over the initial steps of getting here and surviving long enough to establish residency and a stabilised base of life, we’re considering our next steps regarding our freelance work. To be honest, I’m hoping to just save some money through working with data and self-fund our next big push I’m planning something big!), but I’ve saved your text and will get in touch at a later date if I decide to go a different route. Thanks again!

We’re actually getting connected with the Arts Office & related cultural programmes a bit already too — Saydyy will be hosting an event at the Dublin Russian Culture Festival on her native Siberian Culture in the new year!

I know what you meant by it.
I have a few people in a group chat that are from UK. Its unbelievable the stuff they tell me from over there. I don't understand some of these policies. I go to Canada at least every other month and the amount of help they offer over there is crazy. If Doug lived there he probably wouldn't have this kinda problem. Even over here in the states, I know many people on disability, yeah they get enough but they get it and its a quicker process than UK.

  • Hey Doug, just sent a few beans your way.

I'd like to see you do this more like an unabashed quarterly pledge drive for your work.

You are clearly self-employed, and are providing value. This is known as the "value for value" donation model.

Anyone complaining wouldn't support you anyway.

Ramp it up and don't feel guilty about it!

  • Doug does a great service for all of us who use music apps. If we want him to continue we ought to support him with what we feel it’s worth to us.

This is a real eye opener for someone from the US who also works in a health profession. I am shocked at what I am seeing from the UK. I feel like I am reading a modern day Charles Dickens novel from what has been written on this forum. Insufficient medical care for chronic illness, brutal disability programs, lack of opportunity, etc...

While we have overlapping problems here, and plenty of cases of hard times from illness, it is almost unheard to hear of the kind of hardship that Doug describes, that Monzo describes, and Fruitbat and others from the causes they talk about.

I hope everything works out. Doug you have many supporters and you have proven yourself to be quite the innovator over the years.

OK, now i feel informed enough to make up my mind. Thank you for your openess and for opening my eyes a bit. In exchange i have two (hopefully good) ideas for you:

    First idea:

Maybe it would be a good idea if you would host (here and with your Youtube channel) an overview about the black friday deals, combined with your affiliate links.

It could work as a small kick start for your business - and help your situation. Oh, and it also would offer the "elephant in the room" a good opportunity to help you, too.

    :D

    Second idea:

Write an email to redaktion“a-t“amazona.de (that is: Peter Grandl and a website with lots of clicks in Germany) if he would do a black friday iOS special - with your affiliate links. I think: He would - i am quite sure.
