AUM - can’t set sample rate on iPhone 8

It seems to be locked at 48k. I’d like to set it at 44.1. Doesn’t work even if I’ve closed all apps, hard reset, cleared the memory and started a new blank AUM session.

No attached hardware. Same problem with headphones plugged in via dongle or unplugged.

Any ideas? 96k and 88.2k don’t work either.

  • Did you launch another app previously?

  • At first yes, and that’s what I thought it would be, but after taking all the steps listed above and then opening AUM, making sure it was the only app open, I’m still experiencing the problem.

  • All the new iPhones have their internal audio interface locked at 48kHz. The sample rate setting in AUM reflects the actual hardware sample rate, and those iPhones does not allow to change it. You can connect an external audio interface that supports other rates.

I'll consider adding options to at least resample when recording, in case a user wants to record 44.1kHz files even if the hardware runs at 48kHz.

  • Oh, actually the hardware does support 44.1kHz with headphones (lightning) plugged in. So I guess the issue is that only the internal speaker and/or mic is fixed at 48k. That makes it less of an issue, as far as I can see!

We can expect the same 'chaos' as with the 6S iPhones where the default sample rate is changed when jumping between speakers and head-phones causing some apps to flip out :) (That is unless Apple has made sure CoreAudio's sample-rate conversion is improved and we can avoid nasty pops and static noise).

I think part of the reason why Apple chose 48K as the 'default' has to do with video recording.
If that's the case the iPhone 8 also default to 48K 24-Bit instead of 44.1K 16-Bit.
(Video with 44.1K 16-bit audio is a bit of an odd-ball).

  • I'm so confused about this. I just got an iPhone X in part to use to make videos and the sample rate on the video's audio it actually locked at 44.1KHZ. I don't know how this can be. The standard sample rate for movie audio is 48KHZ.

No matter whether I use an external mic or not, or what format I shoot in, the video get exported into Final Cut Pro as 44.1
