Guitar lead to 3.5mm TRS in usb audio device
How best is is to wire a TS guitar lead to a 3.5mm TRS plug in a usb audio device (mono mic input)
At the moment I have both rings to the tip and sleeve to sleeve, is this correct?

Are you shure it's a 3.5 TRS and not a TRRS (for headsets) input ?
Afaik there are no mini-stereo microphone inputs - they usually have that additional ring at the upmost part of the shaft for mic input.
You may use that IF your guitar has an active circuitry (Batterie), otherwise the 'sound' of the guitar is degraded because the input impedance doesn't match.
For proper matching you need a DI box, which can be expensive if it's a quality device.
Those headset inputs rarely have quality converters anyway, so an interface might be more appropriate. Keep in mind that a guitar amp simulation will add a lot of gain that makes any flaws of signal very (!) obvious, in particular noise.
