iPad 1
I’ve read on here before that some people are still using their iPad 1 (not air 1, original iPad) to run a synth or 2, anyone have any ideas? Someone wants to give me one free, could it be an alchemy machine or something? If you do use one as essentially "hardware" now what do you run on it?

Many older apps will work fine, probably a good idea to use it as a dedicated midi controller or AB remote device.
Yes. If I signed into that iPad with my iTunes account, can I download alchemy and the iaps that I had purchased way back when? I’m not dying for alchemy but if the iPad is free and could run it as “hardware “ why not? I have a griffin studio connect that’s not really doing much these days. I also have a 30 pin tascam mic that could make it a dedicated giant stereo digital recorder...for really big pockets.
@mrufino1 I think you can download alchemy and the banks at the moment but this ability doesn't always work so might be best to do it sooner than later. Pretty sure things like lemur, Bebot, thumbjam and many other useful but vintage apps will work fine on that device.
Cool. My friend had gotten the iPad 1 when it was pretty new, but didn’t use it much. He uses a mini 2 when doing sound, but thought he had one stolen by the janitor in the school where he teaches, who had been found to be stealing other things. Today, he went to throw out the loveseat from his living room to make room for the new couch delivery, and he said they cut open the cushions and he found his missing mini 2! That’s good because the one he’s been using for sound, which replaced this one, has a broken screen.
I need a couch that has free iPads inside!
AB Remote would be cool too if that works on an ipad1.
Any idea if duet would work on it? It could find as a second monitor. I think air display will do that on it but I already own duet...

I forgot about many of these apps, they’ll make a nice pairing with my behringer midi controller and the griffin studio connect so it can charge. Thankfully the behringer has regular midi out, not just usb. I think I still have my 30 pin cck too.
Maybe this is the excuse the finally buy Ims-20 so I can learn it and use the hardware one when I go to Maine...
Woah,, I didn't think the ipad1 that I got from my brother was useful at all. That above their thread is a goldmine of useful apps! Cool beans.....
I also forgot about silly things like world of goo (great game) , jailbreaking, and of course, how could I forget that this can run nanostudio? That still might be my all time favorite app. The iPad 1 would be useful just to run that. Now I’m excited!

I use my iPad 1 as a dedicated Samplr instrument. Works great!
AB remote won’t run on an Ipad 1, I think it needs to be either a 3 or newer, because of the Bluetooth. I remember it didn’t work on my IPad 2 when it came out. I ended getting an Air2 so I could use AB remote from to phone to control AB. I use my IPad 2 pretty much as an external hardware synth but tbh, I don’t use it much

A lot of people keep older iPads for awhile, and they can absolutely work for music if you delegate them to running a specific instrument. What I would not do with them is any kind of multitasking or trying to use them as a DAW. But one of the less complicated synth apps with a MIDI keyboard plugged in...sure, it can handle that.
Another thing they are good at is simple MIDI sequencing - either to another iOS device or to external gear. It's not CPU-intensive to send simple MIDI commands if that's all the device is doing.
I think the key is not to over-upgrade. This is a tough balance because if you are 2 or 3 versions of iOS behind the curve, there will be a good number of apps that cannot be downloaded for your device. But if you already had that app on the device, it's not like it ceases to work just because the iOS world moves on around it.
Awesome ideas! Totally forgot about samplr too.... keep the thread going, I guess it’s worth having an updated list as “outdated” iPads will be more and more plentiful.
Just tried: iKaosilator ,Sector, Glitchbreaks, DM1, TC-11,Oscillator, Soundprism,...........these were already on my device, and working great, along with Animoog, ims20, iMini, iSem, Magellan, Sunrizer,& Adictive Synth.......all great apps....

I use iPad 1 to sequence a Creamware Scope system, using Genome or Modstep (the iPad I have is on iOS 5x...) both of the sequencers run on 5...
I also have BM2 on the device and sequence it internally via Genome or Modstep, and send the audio into the Creamware system. (Creamware doesn't have an mpc style sampler)

Yes, maybe a slight exaggeration, .........the presets are a bit slow loading, & the polyphony has to be turned down on complicated patches , but if your using patches/presets that you are familiar with, it runs quite nicely. Of course TC-11 has evolved a lot over the years, so the iPad 1 is running a legacy version that will run on 5.1.1 (last ios ). Put through a mixer and some effects, it's still makes for a pretty impressive app/synth/instrument/weird sci fi machine. Well worth £50.00 for an old iPad just to run this i reckon.......or even better if it's a Freebie!!!
I got alchemy installed to the ipad1 but it crashes when I try to restore purchases, does anyone have any ideas? Loopy, Sunrizer, and animoog installed with no problem.
Lots of use left, so long as you only run one app at a time. I mostly use mine as a dedicated sound module for my 88 key running SampleTank.
I do exactly the same thing, but with iGrand.
