Allen & Heath Zedi USB

I recently got a ZEDi 10 but I'm too stupid to get the USB input (from the iPad) into the main mix (or anywhere) on the mixer. I'm currently looking to get drums from the iPad into the mixer to jam along with my hardware synths. My ultimate goal is to record hardware synths and guitar into Auria while being able to hear softsynth/drum machines/other recorded tracks from Auria.

I have been able to get sound from the synths to Auria and record them, but not sound from the iPad to the mixer. I have gotten AUM to indicate (the meter dots) it was making sound with apps at the app/input meter and the output/hardware meter, but no sound at the mixer. I've tried a million and six button/knob combinations at the mixer with no success. And I've had less success with Auria. I made a post in Auria about this but haven't gotten any responses.

Does anybody here use a ZEDi mixer? And could you help a simpleton like me?

Thanks.

Uh, ...thanks. I got that far. From the mixer to the iPad is working fine, I just can't hear anything from the iPad at the mixer. The manual is kind of vague, or I'm kind of dense, about how it works.

Thanks, I appreciate your taking the time, but that isn't the problem. I don't have anything plugged into the ST-2 or ST-3 jacks. Right now I only have my Eurorack modular plugged into (mono) Input 3.

If nothing is plugged in to those, then you should be good to go, those inputs also function for the USB Audio signal, there’s a block diagram on their site that shows the routings..I’m guessing ST 2 is for USB 1/2, and 3 for 3/4. SO you prolly need to record enable, then adjust the output gain along that signal path. GL!

  • So your set up is like this
    Modular to mixer
    iPad to/from mixer via usb
    Mixer to speakers

    (Stupid question)the volumes are there?

Yes, ST-2 is for USB 1/2 and ST-3 is for USB 3/4 (ZEDi 10). In Auria I have record enabled. The channel meters are indicating both the modular input and the app (Seekbeat right now) and the master is also showing both the modular and the app (Seekbeats). Still nothing. I admit that I am often confused about the input/output matrices in Auria, so perhaps the problem is there. I am using headphones instead of proper monitors and the problem may lie there at the mixer end.

Your chain is correct except it is mixer to phones at the end (no proper monitors). I have the volumes set.

  • Are you monitoring the recording? Sounds like you don’t have the monitoring right in auria. How is seekbeats connected? If you record and play back, do you hear sound from auria then? I don’t know the mixer at all but input monitoring is often the cause of something like this.

  • I just looked at the pdf manual, is the xlr=mons button pushed? And does the monitoring source have headphones selected? The headphones don’t mirror the main out unless that xlr=mons button is pressed according to manual.

Also, in section 3 on usb interface, check the st1 and 2 to aux and st1 and 2 mix knobs, those allow you to hear playback of usb through phones, monitors, etc.

So look at section 1.3 and section 3 of your manual, try those things, and post if they worked or not.

First, thanks for taking the time to look into this for me. I can't get any sound out of the iPad and into the mixer during recording, playback, or any other time.

There is a good chance I may have something set wrong in Auria because the matrices have always befuddled me but, putting aside Auria, I can't get it to work with AUM either. With AUM things seem more clear cut. I set it up with DrumJam running in the top input. At the bottom I select Hardware -> USB 3+4 out. Using the meter at the top I can see a strong level from the app and a strong level at the output. But I don't hear anything at the mixer.

I've tried both settings at the "monitor source". Nothing. I believe these switches tells the monitors what to play, not the phones.

I tried the xlr=mons button. No good. I believe this has to do with the output at the main outs (xlr). I check the ST3 mix and aux knobs. Both are cranked

I have tried every combination of buttons in the "phones select" section below the phones volume knob. No go. I've tried the little PFL button below the ST3 mix knob in various combinations with other buttons. Nada.

I'll call Sweetwater tomorrow and ask them what's up.

Did you find the problem? Having an identical issue here -- works fine from Windows but no sound being returned to the Mixer from my iOS devices.

An addition -- the same problem is also present on Linux.

I've also discovered the cause of the problem but not the solution. Every time I disconnect the interface from USB and reconnect it, the 'Output' master fader (accessible in Windows driver software but not accessible in Linux or iOS) is reset to -89db. The issue can be fixed in Windows using the driver software but there's no method available to do this with a different OS, and the fader seems to be reset on each disconnection/reconnection of the USB interface.

I've confirmed this diagnosis by turning up to extreme volume settings on the desk USB inputs and master fader, and audio from the iPad is then audible (still incredibly quiet, but clearly present).

Would love to figure out how to solve this! I've emailed Allen&Heath and I'll post the solution if they can help (or if I find it myself) for future troubleshooters to track down.

  • To provide resolution for anyone else who finds this thread through Google search troubleshooting in the future:

The solution is blindingly simple and easy to miss. This mixer requires iOS system volume to be turned up for audio to be received at the desk. Very easy to miss because (at least in my experience) it's rare for iOS compatible audio interfaces to act like this. Works perfectly once system volume is turned up though.

Good to see a resolution. I've always heard good things about Allen&Heath. The Zedis look like great small solutions.

I own a Zedi and it just happened to me, couldn’t hear anything and after pressing every single button and 2 restarts it was the iPad volume... again. Can’t get used to it.

I don't think there's anything that does such a good job at what it does than the ZEDi10-fx in the price range (I feel that the FX is worth the extra £50 because the onboard FX can sum with the USB ST2 in, while an external FX loop can't). The only viable desk of similar quality and functionality I found was the Soundcraft Signature series (was considering the 12). The USB on the soundcraft doesn't have as many/as flexible inputs although it does have some other benefits. The ZEDi is perfect for my purposes though.

Yeah it feels very weird to me after using a bunch of other iOS interfaces that don't act this way. Took me a whole week to finally figure it out!
