@Seangarland try downloading reaper, see if it works in there. It's free to try, and definitely hosts au instruments. Just make sure you have monitoring on for the track so you hear what you're playing. I haven't used GB enough on my Mac to know about hosting au synths but it's possible that it doesn't?
Also, there are 2 libraries, one for the machine across all users and one for the user, so it's possible that you were looking in the wrong one.
So I guess the obvious question, and where I may be making a mistake, is whether there is a specific location/folder that I’m supppsed to download these plugins to when I first downloaded them?
I think by default it goes into the Downloads folder, and then I run the .dmg file.
Like I said, I’m learning as I go ...
Yes open the DMG and inside is usually a package or installer then run that. If the DMG has the component in it you can drop that into the components folder. You will probably get prompted to enter the computer password sometimes you have to restart.
The Micro DAW I mentioned earlier is worth trying because of the known issues with GB.
I grabbed this deal (including all expansions) for $9 and change. Unfortunately it FAILED TO PASS AU EXAMINATION in Digital Performer. I have hundreds of plugins, including freeware and small developer/bedroom products, and this is the only one that has ever failed. Lame, lame, lame. Fortunately, DP also supports VST, so I was able to get it working that way. Doesn't inspire confidence for me in AIR Music Technology, but It was eventually a fun way to spend my Thursday exploring 1000s of new synth sounds.
AIR Music Technology and SONiVOX are owned by inMusic, which also owns AKAI, Alesis, M-Audio, Marantz, Denon, and other companies. SONiVOX and AIR are theonly companies are the only ones I know that release versions of their expensive software for $1 or even free. And while they are selling for $1 somewhere, they are selling for $129 somewhere else. Very weird. And they also put all or most of their products together for sale for $60 at the same time that they sell an individual synth for more than that. I bought all the AIR stuff last year, and to tell you the truth, my favorite thing was Hybrid, and I feel pretty dumb now.
Now... it seems like they are focusing more on their crazy marketing rather than updating their software. For example, SONiVOX's Big Bang Cinematic Percussion crashes on nearly all DAWS running Windows 10. SONiVOX admitted a year ago that it was a bug. But they continue to sell it everywhere for as much as $70 (lists for $199 haha) . Right now it's $11.80 at Plugin Boutique and there is a fix for it that can be found online. But the word is that a lot of the more expensive stuff from the company crashes on Windows 10. Their cheap libraries (Singles) work fine. I really love Silk Road Percussion and Atsia Percussion and they are both available for $3 each now. But SONiVOX does provide fully functional temporary demos on all their products, so you can check their stuff before you buy. Let the buyer beware.
All of which is a very long-winded way of saying that maybe there are problems with some of the AIR stuff too, as they are owned by the same company. I haven't had any issues, but you and I use different DAWs. Maybe inMusic's policy is just to run out the clock by pretending to sell these products for big money most of the time and then getting people to pounce when the go for ten or twenty bucks. Meanwhile they haven't come out with anything new in years.
But they have come out with two new expansions for Hybrid since I bought a year ago. But they don't work up a sweat paying programmers to create them, maybe even in exchange for getting their name and face on the package.
If anybody buys a reasonable amount of stuff at Plugin Boutique, you get "tokens" in addition to a small amount of cashback. These can be exchanged for loops, synth presets, etc. Currently for one token you can buy another AIR Synth, Vacuum, for $1.
So, one problem solved. A simple reboot of the Mac has now enabled GarageBand to see the plug-ins. But, I am getting the same message as many, saying that "Audio Unit plug-in can't be used".
This error is happening with Hybrid 3, Crystal Synth, and Rough Rider EFX plug-in as well, so it doesn't seem to be specific to Hybrid 3.
Best $1 I ever spent!
In DP there is an option to load and use AU plugins that have failed validation despite the warning. It warns you that it could cause problems, but you can choose to ignore the warning and load it anyway. Sometimes it's not a serious issue, just some programmer who didn't conform to some spec. I know of one DP user who reports he ignored the AU warning and Hybrid is running fine.
Don't know if GB allows this, but it might be worth a shot. If you get lots of crashes w/ Hybrid 3, you'll know it , and then you can just disable it.
