@skiphunt if you're willing to look past iOS only, Go grab the excellent VCVrack. It's opensource and at the excellent price of FREE.
People are converting tons of actual hardware modules and the current count is at 140+...

A demo of what it can do:-

It actually stopped me from buying more synths during Black Friday. Was surprised myself D:

There's hundreds of videos out at this point with songs people are creating using only it. Myself I've actually routed it into ableton to basically turn it in a modular monster. I'm having a blast :)

I 2nd this. VCV rack is incredible and probably the best gateway to modular.

As far as zMors goes, I think it’s more engaging and... dare I say it... interesting than Audulus. It’s incredibly well thought out and probably worth more than the regular price tag.

Yes, VCVrack was a great suggestion for me. I’m completely lost at the moment, and no where near as knowledgeable as @gonekrazy3000 but the visual interface looks 1-to-1 the same as the hardware versions. And there are tons of videos about how to set up and patch hardware. So, it’ll be a great entry into that realm without having to drop any cash until I learn more.

Already set up an account and loaded a few modules to patch, but haven’t generated anything yet.

I did also buy zMors Mod and am liking the interface better already. It doesn’t seem to like loading IAAs much, slows to a crawl and can’t even scroll, but it handles AUs just fine. Will investigate later.

Thanks again to @gonekrazy3000 for the VCVrack tip. That’s exactly what I was really looking for. Sweet! :)

i highly recommend some of the free modules. specially the Vult plugin pack. his oscillators and filters are fantastic. i actually helped him make his oscillator by feeding him samples from my 0-coast :D the end result is nothing like my physical synth but its a monster in its own right :)

We should likely go private message with this I'm guessing, since this is getting really off topic now. ;) lol

I've installed the latest rack, created an account, installed the plugins it comes with. Installed a 3rd party plugin from the list you gave me, and just installed the Vult pack. I know how to add the plugins to the rack and how to patch one to another. But if you could be so kind just to tell me the very basic, primal beginnings of what you add to first generate signal, and what you add to hear that signal. I know... I'm an extreme beginner here... but, baby steps. :)

Please keep it public. :) I am enjoying following this thread and am learning a lot, as well as being exposed to the VCVrack, which is all new info to me.

I'm super excited about this. This is perfect for what I've been looking for in the last few weeks or so... a way to play and learn about this stuff without having to spend the money before I know what I'm doing. And, an enviroment with visual representation of what the real stuff looks like. I'm thinking after I figure some of this stuff out from the VCVrack interface, the iOS modular apps will start making more sense too. I'm more of a visual learner and this is going to be perfect for me. Yes!!! Thanks again @gonekrazy3000 :)

I learn most from deconstructing others peoples' wonderful patches at the moment: https://patchstorage.com/platform/vcv-rack/

Oh wow! I missed this patches collection. Thanks!

Glad I got zMors Modular, but I'm not that wild about the interface. Some things I like better than Audulus 3 and some things in Audulus 3 are better. Kind of a toss-up, but I'm actually now getting a bit further along in both due to the VCVrack platform and the links @gonekrazy3000 turned me on to.

Curious, this forum isn't likely the place to discuss the VCVrack stuff, but is there another forum anyone recommends that's more specifically about VCVrack stuff? I like the https://llllllll.co forums for a lot of stuff, and see VCVrack mentioned there some as well, but is there one good forum that's devoted entirely to VCVrack discussion?

Once I get a better understanding, I plan on revisiting the Audulus 3 forums, because I also dig that platform too. I just haven't been able to get over the initial learning curve with Audulus 3, but VCVrack is jiving better... at least so far it is. :)

To be honest. The only place they really have is the vcv Facebook group. I'd much rather discuss it here. Maybe we should make an OT: VCVRack discussion thread

Man I just opened up Audulus today for the first time in a while...I just don’t get along with version 3, the different commands, and especially the module browser. I learned a boatload from version 2 but I have no desire to open 3 again. Even all the included patches seem esoteric.

I'm in the same boat, i wanna commit to one platform though, and it's a tough choice. Audulus is a genius concept, a much better interface and an actual platform to develop your own modules/ideas from visual building blocks. iCloud Sync is awesome as well. I'd say i've gotten behind the concept, and am having great fun building synths/presets.

It kinda gives me the same rush that lemur template programming gave me, to actually be able to implement your own ideas. Also i'm feeling i'm enjoying the tremendous advantages that software can have, instead of "just" emulating existing hardware.

But VCV is so awesome as well, especially at the free price. You can already tell, that this is gonna have a big impact, so very hard to just neglect it...

    Amazing problems to have!

DO IT DO IT DO IT!

  • I joined the VCVrack Facebook group immediately after finishing that first beginners video. However, I'm trying to make a conscious effort to drastically limit my time on Facebook in general. I like poking in every now and then to see what family and friends are up to, as well as making contact with people I've met traveling over the years... but there's a lot of the Facebook that I find culturally damaging. Nor, am I wild about being "tracked" for marketing purposes, etc. I'll just leave it at that.

I've only been lurking over on that other forum I mentioned https://llllllll.co and it seems like it's more related to modular discussions than anything else. Mostly hardware though. Their podcast is pretty good too: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-process/id1112057891?mt=2

Seems kinda weird to have a topic devoted to VCVrack on a forum mostly targeted at iOS mobile sound apps. Seems REALLY off-topic lol ;) but, I'm not opposed. Just not sure how many of us who are interested there are here. And, it would be difficult keeping it anything close to organized in one thread.

I personally am VERY green with this stuff and wouldn't feel all that comfortable asking such beginner questions to those like @gonekrazy3000 and others here who may have already evolved to expert knowledge of coding modules, or building elaborate hardware. That's why I was wondering if a dedicated forum existed so that maybe I could meander in the shallow end for a bit until I feel like I can swim. :)

  • Another quick off-topic question related to VCVrack... if I'm sending VCVrack to core audio, but want to also record core audio into Logic Pro without recording the built-in mic too, is there a way to do that? I'm guessing I'd need to use Soundflower, but maybe there's a way to do with with an Aggregate? I've tried the Aggregate route, but so far no luck. Could be I've set it up wrong though.

to be honest since i'm on windows i'm not sure about the coreaudio question. in windows i'm actually using jack to route the audio between ableton and vcv rack. and i'm using my ica4+ to route audio from ios into either app.

Don't worry too much about asking me stuff. I started with no knowledge whatsoever in terms of modular but decided to just see if could port some of my more complex midi experiments in Zmors. ended up actually learning how modular's work as a result.
just experiment and play around. you'll get the gist of it eventually :)

I'm actually trying to modify the audio interface module to allow upto 16 channels in and out for VCVrack. i ain't a coder at all but with some help from the other plugin devs i have a vague idea what i need to change. if i succeed i'll be making a 32 In/Out module for my more insane needs :D (i'm basically trying to see if i can completely replace all synths and effect modules inside ableton purely with VCVrack.)

  • yeah you need to use soundflower

  • edited November 2017

Actually got help almost immediately after asking the question on the VCV Rack facebook group. It was indeed Soundflower I needed to use. I thought so, but I was having trouble getting Soundflower set up with High Sierra and wanted to make sure that's what I needed before troubleshooting. Evidently the 1.6 Soundflower version isn't compatible with High Sierra, you have to use the new v2.2 beta version.

Got it all working now, and feeding into Logic for recording. Sweet! :)

Also, evidently some of the 3rd party plugins also come with a WAV recorder as well. Haven't found or tried yet though. Might be cool to not even need to use Logic, set up a cool patch, record within the rack with a WAV recorder, then bump that over to the iPad to play with further.

I'm currently breaking my head getting 16channels to work. Have to rewrite parts of the app @,@. If I manage it I'll probably post it on the Facebook group :)

Hey @gonekrazy3000 I've temporarily deactivated my facebook account... can't look a political stuff at the moment... most of the recent stuff just infuriates me, so I decided to at least temporarily deactivate it.

In the meantime, the VCV Rack stuff is catching on over at the Lines https://llllllll.co forum I mentioned before. Lots a hardware modular artists/geeks there. Fresh VCV Rack thread here: https://llllllll.co/t/vcvrack-virtual-modular-synthesizer/10351

I’d say so as it can host AUv3s as modules.
