Battery efficient loop playback apps?

Most of my music making is using iOs apps to make loops of all sorts. It's just so easy to get a good groove going and then I'm happy to listen to the same loop for hours while I work.

Now that I have an iPhone as well as an iPad, I'd like to playback my loops when I'm away from plug in power. Does anyone have any info which apps might be particularly battery efficient for playing back recorded .wav loops? (I'm assuming playing back a recorded loop is usually going to be less of a battery drain than running multiple sample based apps or midi/synth combos - but correct me if that's wrong, please.)

Thanks for any help!

  • Well, without any hard facts to back me up, I am going to agree with your assumption about battery drain. More apps, plus synths and whatnot, is going to tax your battery harder.
As for a light loop playback app, I would suggest AUM. You can load multiple File players and set them to loop or not, plus your can control the levels of the different loops easily with the mixer. You can even offset when a particular file player starts if you want to offset some loops from starting all together.
Anyway, hope this helps you. :)

Oh, that's clever! I never considered playing back multiple loops at the same time in AUM. And mixing them with some of Brambos's CPU sparing AU plugins is going to make this very interesting. Oh! And being able to record the new output mix as well and keep things all organized in AudioShare. Thank you - very helpful!

Yes, all this! And it'll be even easier once @j_liljedahl gets to the quantized FX insert mute/unmute in AUM. It'll make it much easier to count in/out loops. Good times are coming to iOS music making!

  • There's also Loopy and Launchpad. Loopy allows for up to 12 with dedicated outputs if you need them. And time stretching. Works great on iPhone. AUM is awesome but if you want to have a few loops playing on the iPhone there will be a lot of swiping whereas you can see all 12 on one loopy screen.

FWIW, I find Loopy to be the most battery efficient looper app of the bunch.

  • I wasn't in love with Loopy on the iPad, but wow - it really is something special on an iPhone. Time to rekindle that friendship! Thanks for the info.
