any decent AUv3 amp sim around?

while JamUp sounds good it's a constant pita over here (together with Cubasis). most of the time it goes belly up while loading. so is there already a decent AUv3 option available?

  • I think Tonebridge is the only one that's AU. But it is sort of a black box where you pretty much just load presets for tones. You don't get to create your own setup like Tone Stack, Bias, and the others. I still think it's pretty cool though. Sounded pretty good to me.

It’s fun to reminisce to all the old blink-182 songs and tones and other hits of my jr. high years. They did a pretty good job with it for what it is

  • If you combine them with a good polymetric EQ and fine-tune the wet/dry effect signal, many Tonebridge presets can turn out quite convincing.

Most presets allow you to demo the tone. If you compare their demo tone with your own guitar’s tone, you can get an idea of how you need to adjust your guitar’s signal to more closely approximate what the pedal is going for. Of course, in many cases, you’ll still need to further tweak your tone to get the end result even closer to the original song’s tone.

Some of their tones are really just spot-on. It even does a pretty decent job getting your single-coil sounding more like a humbucker or vise versa, if your guitar collection is limited. (Of course, it’s always better to use the appropriate pickup configuration if you have it at your disposal.)

This is a surprisingly powerful app, especially given that it’s 100% free with no strings attached.

Yes if you follow their little guitar setup tip for the preset you are using it helps tremendously.

  • This thread needs an update! I haven’t massively kept up but clearly there has been a bit of an AUv3 explosion. My patchy attempt at a round-up;

    • Overloud THU
    • Klevgrand Stark
    • Nembrini BST100
    • Mammoth (bass only)
    • Blue Mangoo Gain Stage (not sure this ever got released?)
    • Tonebridge (preset player, not maintained)

What have I missed? I know you can string together your own chain of apps; Nembrini does quite a few and I see MagicDeathEye, Reamp and Thafknar mentioned a fair amount.

Sadly Tonestack and BIAS never got the AUv3 treatment but hey, cue the rise of the next generation B)

The Blue Mangoo Gain Stage Vintage Clean AUv3 sounds absolutely amazing! Might be my favorite guitar clean tone on iOS.

Nembrini amps sound incredible with a real full analog tone and none of the fake processing associated with digital guitar. The amps are tops in my book and AUv3, but actually their PSA1000 preamp might be the best on iOS especially for bass guitar.

For some reason I didn’t vibe with Stark and Reamp, just doesn’t sound right to me. Big fan of the dev though.

Overloud THU with AUv3 and complete midi control integration could be the big game changer for iOS guitarists. If their Full Pack went on any sort of sale I’d get it yesterday.

Mammoth for metal and industrial bass sure. It’s a pretty fun UI.

Saturn 2 of course, many of the FF/TB plugins super great for guitar sculpting. I also really like the FAC plugins for guitar, just great quality sound. Plenty to get excited about for guitarists!

  • Nembrini have several iOS amp sims in addition to the BST100 (a Soldano sim):

    MRH810 (Marshall)
    Cali Reverb (Mesa),
    Soundmaster (Fender)
    8180 (Peavey High Gain)
    Crunck (free)

Does Gain Stage have another screen of controls beside the base one with presets? The base screen appears to only have controls for eq (I'm guessing) plus input/output levels.

Also, can you save your own presets — or are you limited to the five or so that come with the app?

I would prefer to have options for gain, and presence at least. Also, does it include reverb?

Gain Stage has the one screen and it’s concise but functional. There are 6 presets from clean to crunch and they’re all fantastic. You can definitely adjust the presets and then save them both in the plugin or in AUM for example. There is Reverb but it’s called “room size” and it’s 4 settings small to large so not knob adjustable. There’s on/off for peak limiter, mono/stereo input, mono to stereo cab emulation, and oversampling choice, none of them are knobs. The only knobs you get are the 5 band input EQ and 5 band output EQ. So you can adjust and sculpt the presets in all these ways but I don’t think you can create a tone from scratch, or add sudden gain beyond what the EQs can do. I think of this AUv3 as a preamp that gets me a perfect clean guitar tone or light vintage crunch tone with some adjustments if I want. It just sounds great. I can’t claim it’s a full fledged guitar amp though, closer to a preamp or saturator with 6 specific presets. Maybe they will add more presets and also midi switching but a the price point I love it for what it is, great tone and quality.

  • 👍🏻

  • or, what would Chuck Berry use on iOS

  • Don’t forget Guitar Rack by TC Helicon - you only need to buy hardware to unlock everything! 🙃

    • Tonebridge (preset player, not maintained)

Tonebridge has the Workshop where you can create your own presets.

Gain Stage Clean is amazing once you get the hang of how the various EQs work. Definitely the best Vox tones I’ve come across so far in iOS and the room reverb sounds really good.
If clean to crunchy Fender, Vox and Marshall tones are your thing then you could make do with this and nothing else IMO. Tremendous value.

Yeah, which is defo cool, but I don’t think you have access to that functionality when using as an Audio Unit

Indeed and that is one big fail. Unless they were trying to emulate actual workshop at the bottom of the garden where you have to get the keys and walk there to work on your tone.

It’s a bit like telling a guitarist: you can plug your guitar into this amp but don’t touch any of the controls at the gig, you do that when you’re back home.

Nobody will withstand this level of torture in the long run.
