Funny thing: on macrumors, the next article below that is about how iOS 7 is now on 73% of devices.

Well, it's on my device too, but I'm not using it and I did not ask for it!

No hard feelings CEO Tim, thanks for all the music making fun on my iPad 2. And please take back your iOS 7. I don't need it.

If you go to software update in settings, it should show you that iOS 7 is "ready to install".

There is no way to delete the file (for non-jailbroken devices at least).

Actually, in that case it most likely has downloaded, but can't be installed (because it needs more free space to temporarily extract the installation files from the download).

  • Download and Install. Two different things. BTW iOS 7 is great. Far better than iOS 6.

  • @synthandson No I was just making a general comment as some people don't know whether iOS 7 has been INSTALLED onto their iDevices. The main thing here is Apple pushed iOS 7 onto iDevices as opposed to installing it. I had 7.1 sitting on my iPad and I only installed it when I was ready. iOS 7 is a new OS so I don't blame for Apple pushing it out to its customers (think security and all that) but obviously people still had the final choice as to whether to install it or not. So people can sue Apple for this but they will be wasting their precious time.

  • This was mentioned all in another thread here yes. When you are connected to Wi-Fi and the power supply (or you are over 50% of battery) it will download automatic. We all agree to this in the small prints! It really sucks for me too but we agreed to this "feature"!

  • @synthandson Terms and conditions, well said. You only have to look at the alternatives to realise that Apple are looking after their customers even if sometimes it doesn't appear so. Android users don't complain about OSes because for them it is just wash and go until the next new phone. A slight exaggeration but something like that.

But other companies let you go back where apple will lock you to such a beta software like iOS 7. There are always bugs after major updates but iOS 7 is really bad in this point (+ a lot hardware issues too).

  • @galaxyexplorer - " But other companies let you go back" hence why such companies are beset with so many more complicated problems in the mobile space meaning all their resources are dedicated to fixing problems and less time dedicated to improving software and hardware integration. If you say iOS 7 is beta then think about android OSes which end up being perpetually beta software so the users settle for the OS they are on until the end of their contracts. I know which option I'd rather be on. No hardware problems for my iPhone and iPad here. My work colleague had a problem with his iPhone 5 after he had used it for about 9 months and Apple gave him a brand new one just this week. He had gone skiing and faffing around (dropped it numerous times) with his phone but he still ended up with a brand new iPhone. IMini next for him in the coming days he says. That's how Apple works, not perfect but better than the rest.

I have used (and using again) iOS and Android. All i can say is that from my personal experience that with iOS 7 i had/have more problems as with Android. And i also had never hardware issues on another device... just with my iPhone 5s! In the past i agreed but this time is over yet.
Even windows 8rt is better and has "real" multitasking etc. IOS is still the best for music production.... that's all and for me there is a step back with iOS 7!

Apple keeps things so locked down and proprietary, this is good and bad; you don't have the freedom, but you don't run into as many problems and they have full control. For me, I'll always have an Android phone because I can do way more on it than I can an iPhone. Things like a proper filing system, customization, access to more settings and etc. The problem I see with the Android platform is this, and don't get me wrong I love that it's open-source, I can make a cell phone in my basement out of whatever supplies I have put the Android OS on it and sell it. Most people when debating between an iPhone or Android, if they pick Android, they get a basic cheap Android phone instead of a higher up one (Motorola or Samsung mostly) that is in line with an iPhone. They run into problems because they bought a low-end phone and switch to Apple. Apple, because they are so locked down, don't have this issue because they have a limited amount of products to cover versus tons of Android phones. Android OS itself was designed to be able to run on anything not just phones and tablets. App-wise most major names are released simultaneously on each store now or close to each other. Apple still remains the standard for mobile music making by a mile, but better watch because it looks like Microsoft is making some moves....

    Just my $0.02

  • @galaxyexplorer - why not return the 5s and get something else. Like JMSexton says there's comparable android phones. You probably need to try another platform rather than being unhappy with your 5s. Windows? Late to the party and who is making apps for them? I don't know if window's phones suffer from latency but if they do they are DOA. I know everyone has their take on things but I am more productive on iOS 7 now as the look and feel makes me think it is all new and I'm pushing things to the limit. Maybe it is because iOS is just part of my music making Mac rig so I can bypass it if I wanted to.

  • I still have returned my 5s and my 5 was also sold. I'm waiting for Nexus 5 with Android 4.4 while i'm using an "old" iPhone 4 at the moment.... too slow :(

I totally agree with that lawsuit.

If I was depending on an app that didn't work on iOS 7 and there was no way to delete the iOS 7 update files from the device that means my iDevice is now less capable than before (lacking a significant amount of storage space).

Same goes for people who don't want to update to the new OS (like older people who have just gotten used to how things work in iOS 6).

  • It would be no problem for me if there is a way to go back or delete it before updating... but no way. I bet a lot people would downgrade (like me) if they could. It was possible in the first days after iOS release but then apple stoped it.... mhhh.... they want to tell that everybody updates as usual. They just gone the wrong way this time. The feedback i got from family and friends and what i saw in the net is similar to my experiences and i hope it does not work for apple this time (but sadly it will) because the only thing which could change something are we users. So i really really hope that a lot people try to change like me. Not because i don't like them but because nothing will change and next time we get an automatic download AND update eh'! I just think there was too many downgrades in the first days and then they try to lock the others! Apple... i like the devices but the way is wrong.

  • Please don't take it as an offense but i'm seriously asking myself why you didn't just wait a little with upgrading your phone and/or iOS then? It's not that nobody warned the (music)user to upgrade the iOS...

  • edited October 2013

@Crabman: It's very simple... because my fault was to trust still apple a bit that they let me downgrade which was always possible in the past. I was suprised myself that they stop this way too. So there was always a way back in the past that was the reason i wanted to "test" it.... damn.... no way back yet! The iPhone 4 i'm using now was still updated to iOS 7 too :( And how i said it was possible in the first few days after iOS 7 release. So why should they stop it now?...... Think about it......
Especially on older devices it's terrible in my opinion. Design is also crap but that's just my flavour. For sure i would never do that again now. I see bad times for iOS 8......

  • edited October 2013

only half true.Afair you could downgrade (from 6 to iOS 5 for example)only for a very limited time (unti apple stops signing the old iOS).And - again - as far as i know,it was the same with iOS 7.Maybe the timeframe was shorter now? Can't remember...

I'm sorry but i have not the deepest feelings for people who dive into a new OS and even buying the latest iDevice on it's release day and starting all this rants then.Apple is not god,it's a company.Companies make mistakes.Unfortunately Apple as well.I don't like the evolution of Apple the last years.Every year a new OSX,ITunes,More bugs on all their platforms than in the past (it seems) and so on...In this case i totally agree with you but in your special situation...you just can't blame apple for that now.It was obvious that waiting for iOS 7.1 would be better for people who rely on a (more or less)rock solid iOS.You just should have waited for some user feedback or trusted all the warnings from serious websites.Again,no offense, just my opinion.seems not fair to say"apple is doomed"now.I'm sure they will fix most things, that's what updates for...

By the way,i definitely agree with the lawsuit as well.

  • Apple has done this (automatic update downloaded and ready to install) with OS X for years but of course the HDD size makes it much less of an issue. I'm surprised they wouldn't have the foresight to see the problems this would cause with the limited storage space available on iOS devices, especially 16gb devices.

I wonder if there is any legitimate reason for Apple not providing a way to simply delete it for users who don't wish to update, outside of silly "Apple is trying to force us all to live in iTunes hell for all of eternity" style answers?

I understand (though don't fully agree with) their motive of providing the automatic download as a way to encourage adoption conveniently, but why not allow users to delete it?

Also, I can't remember but didn't this happen with the transition to iOS 6 as well? Why no outrage then?

  • However, i'm not trying to flame apple here and i will stop such disscussions from my side here about this. I really wish they listen more to users and solve their issues soon. I really liked my iPhone etc. but.......
Yeah, let's hope they make no "shit" with the next iPads which seems to be the most important tool for the most iOS musicians here. Good luck!

  • For the record, no outrage here. Kinda sucks if you're almost out of space though. I think they should have at least considered the % of available space it would take before downloading: if it would take more than 50% of available space, don't!

Ultimately, I reckon it made a much much better upgrade experience for the majority of their customers.

Somewhat interestingly, I read somewhere recently that io6 was adopted faster than ios7.

  • @syrupcore - "For the record, no outrage here. Kinda sucks if you're almost out of space though. I think they should have at least considered the % of available space it would take before downloading: if it would take more than 50% of available space, don't!"

Totally agree, if they had an option like they do for OS X this would not be such a debacle.

@Simon - "Is that correct? I thought OSX monitored if there updates available online, but didn't actually download it to your Mac until you ok'd it."

Yes. The option is in Software Update in System Preferences, and is ON by default. "Download newly available updates in the background. You will be notified when the updates are ready to be installed."

Few people think about it because it rarely causes storage capacity problems due to much larger drives on Macs. It actually is convenient, when you choose to update you don't need to wait for a large download before proceeding. That's kind of the whole idea with Apple and their products "just working" and technology being "invisible".

Alternatively, if you don't want automatic downloads, just uncheck the option. If they had simply provided this option in iOS and/or the ability to remove the unwanted download after the fact I don't think anyone would be talking about this. Seems it should have been very obvious that with low storage capacity devices this option would only make even MORE sense on iOS. Dumb move on Apple's part if you ask me.

What's interesting to me is that I believe iOS 6 was also automatically downloaded to devices. I don't remember this kind of anger though, maybe due to the fact that it was a smaller download and not as radical of a change from 5 to 6. When there's not as much new stuff to learn there tends to be significantly less numbers of angry/frustrated users.

  • And if Apple opened up external storage options on iOS, it would be even more of a non-issue. I realize that would impact sales, but maybe they would see a surge from non-iOS owners taking a new interest.

  • How much there is to learn isn't a factor if you haven't installed it, it's just the wasted space.
