  • There's something about this app that simply doesn't 'click' with me :(
Maybe it's because I'm already so used to PPG WaveGenerator and Nave?!

  • I tried to like it, but it’s up against the PPG 4 - the PPG apps have now become super hero status to myself :p I’m so into spending time with them that I even like the file system now!

Nave is just loverly except not being an AU!

Poseidon is cool as well in third place, but still a bloody great app.

Scythe just feels like a lovely interface with little under the surface to myself (shrugs) - maybe it’s great for some uses that I just don’t do?

After spending the last few days making 40 Atmospheric and FXy presets in WaveMapper, with its inventive structure, I just can’t get any enthusiasm for the simplicity of Scythe.

  • I like it for ambient, or evil insane type sounds at $5! If you compare to infinite thats pretty hard to beat. This is a more evil sounding digital beast perhaps.

I had the same thoughts, & it’s not easy for a compulsive person like me to keep my finger off the buy button.
However... this app has something hanging over it that i don’t like. I think someone mentioned the developer in a negative way, in another thread. Can’t remember where. Maybe someone can clearify.

It is interesting that you and others have come to the same conclusion as me. The app looks like quite a lot of work has been put into it, and the sale price had my finger over the buy button. But then being of diminished resources at this time, I asked myself if I’d really use it...and the answer was no.

Even Doug’s review didn’t persuade me. All I could hear was an app for making the soundtrack to a remake of The Invaders. ;) No doubt others better versed in this type of app will enjoy it and work digital alchemy.

Instead, I bought QuatroMod with the last few quid on a gifted iTunes card.

What a great idea - ‘soundtrack to a remake of the invaders’! If they ever do it send them my way! I have a growing bank of ‘invaders’ sounds :)

Despite being a weird noise fan, and liking the look of it, I haven’t been tempted either. It all sounds a bit samey in the vids I’ve watched, though I’ll have a look at Doug’s later and see if it knocks me off the fence.

  • At the sale price I feel it is worth it and I’m looking forward to updates in the offing. It’s easy to use - no menu diving. I really like the Lfo animations as well. Obviously not as deep as Nave or PPG stuff. As someone else mentioned, it could use a good a good filter.

  • On every single review I have watched for this app, the sounds are pretty much the same. It doesn't feel like very varied in what it can do. So I personally don't see any point in buying when you have a moog 15 or an ivcs3.

Agreed, but if you really play with the Lfos, you can get more than the typical tissue paper rumbles.

  • I find the app very useful when you use its strengths which is the ability to use an lfo to sweep a wavetable. If the sounds aren’t varied enough for your needs, you can import whatever sounds you want via AudioShare and turn them into wavetables. Using the app as a polyphonic drone with evolving textures is great. You can drag the lfo link to whatever control you want. The app isn’t for everyone though to be fair Doug’s video barely scratched the surface of what it can do.

I picked on that, due to having started watching ‘The Invaders’ from the start. For David Vincent, the nightmare has begun.

If I ever won the Euro lotto, after doing good deeds, etc, I’d LOVE to get the rights to remake the show. So many ideas for how it could be done as something that would give people the willies.

Loved it when I was younger and the sound was a big part of that love

With all respect, Doug can still learn a lot about synthesis. Sometimes he only plays presets - without nearly understanding the app he is presenting. I like his older videos much more, sorry. It is unclear to me if Doug is willing to learn now, if he is able to do. Health can be such a bitch.

To be clear, Scythe is limited (no filter etc.) and needs a lot of "user work" to get unique results, especially if you don't like its standard "harsh droney electrified" sound it usually produces. Which i like. User wavetables (of instruments sounds or even better: spoken words, soundscapes) help a lot to get more variation. But, there is more in it - i got some really nice and warm (!!) pad sounds out of it. It is possible to use only a small part of the wavetable - and then combine it with a complete different wavetable, which can lead to asthonishing results.

It is great to produce a "alien"-like athmosphere from nearly every sound source you have (best fit, imho: words from Theresa May or Donald Trump). It is special - and exact this is, what i like.

I still miss included filters which would help a lot.

It didn't have midi when it launched, but that's all I'm aware of. I like it. Everything's on one screen and very easy to work with.

  • Obviously not for the first few of you, but some of us are diggin' it plenty :)

Here's a good write up on this app on Synth Anatomy : http://www.synthanatomy.com/2017/10/scythe-by-bitmask-studio-is-a-new-powerful-wavetable-synthesizer-for-ipad.html

This video was from the launch version of the app and it's now had several updates, but if you're like some of us who are loving this app, here's a video that shows it off a bit better:

Admittedly, I am a WT ignoramus, but I also thought importing your own waves would give you as much sound variety as you cared to load into it. And since this app is pretty fresh out the gates, don't you think filters are probably an update or two away? Anyway, $5, 8 updates since release a month ago, and AudioShare importing make this a winner in my opinion. If I was already a PPG veteran, I would most likely think otherwise.

I have to say, I do love the on the main screen representation of the wave tables. Hope the dev does develop the app further :)

  • Personally I like it. I have PPG Infinite and Nave but find this much easier to navigate. Could it uses some filters, ya I guess. Do I have filters that I can drop in to make it sound awesome, sure. Would I use those filters anyway, probably. Does this app have everything your looking for in a wavetable synth, I doubt any of them do. But it is a very solid start by a more than competent and enthusiastic developer, yes. Worth the money, well that's for you to decide. It has provided me a good amount of entertainment and inspiration for the money I have spent. I have spent more and have gotten much less on other apps.

I know, this was a grammar and punctuation nightmare, thanks for playing along.

  • Another update just now. This dev is on a roll! B)

  • I have made a small demo to show some usages for drone sounds. I added a small percentage of Crystalline. Enjoy!

Sounds awesome. I jsut downloaded the app. I think it’s great. I need to build some patches of my own to see what it can really do :). The UI looks great and modern.

Here is a stupidity quick little something that shows Scythe is not always all Droney.

  • It's always the same kind of sounds. I am not convinced. No versatility so far.

  • edited November 2017

Some new Demosounds, here with Rhythmical variations using the LFO section.

I don't think they are always "same kind of sound". Yes, there is a special character with Scythe. Your work as a sound designer decides about your sounds. There is much more variation possible - i have scratched the surface yet. Maybe i should do a new demo with focus on sound variation?

Oh, and please: Tell me an app which can create this kind of otherwordly spacey sound. I know a lot of good and more than good other iOS synths. But nothing with this sound.

I think there is a lot of use for it. Oh, i forgot the link:

How do you think about it?
