And clicking on “Settings“ in that screen presents only these options. Nothing about quality.

If you’re willing to have an extra app or open to a new web browser, Dolphin browser works for controlling quality (the cog wheel to switch to 720p functions, and if you set it to auto it will stay at 720p assuming you’re on wifi). A bonus I’ve just found out is you can play audio in the background by going to home screen, then swiping up on control center and hitting play (the audio will resume). Dunno how long til they fix that glitch, but it’s currently there and it’s a beauty.

Dolphin Web Browser for iPad by MoboTap Inc.

Edit: copy pasting app store links isn’t working, sorry, but it’s there

  • @Lady_App_titude All right. It seems Safari was launching the Youtube app and that is why there is so much difference in our experiences. But now that I have it open in Safari, I can access the correct cog wheel and it lets me choose 720p. Auto is 360p. So it seems I am having more luck than you, but at least you now know that something is up and you aren't necessarily stuck with just 360p because of some Google shenanigans. Let me know if you would like me to test/check anything else for you. B)

  • I actually think YouTube app is way better than YT accessed via Safari. Smoother, quicker and everything is easy to find. Not sure whether app has gotten better or safari went pear shape...but that is my two pence on the subject

Thx @CracklePot ! Useful information. Several things have been wonky since I did the iOS 11 update. Unfortunately I can’t redo the install and I can’t think of anything else to try.

OK, I figured out it is my ad blocking app (1Blocker ) that is causing the problem. Safari is unbearable without ad blocking, so turning it off is not an option. Hopefully it will be fixed in the next 1Blocker update. In the meantime I can use Firefox.

And, yes, certain things are better in the YouTube app, but lack of ad blocking is why I can’t/won’t use it.

  • The YouTube app is deeply crap. Working one moment, then goes to the Black and white half and half blank. The only thing that fixes that is to disable wireless for about 20 seconds, then re-enable it and wait another 20 seconds,

  • No problem in the app iPad Air 2 iOS 11 selecting Quality or even Playback Speed when touching the 3 dots top right on the video itself. You need to touch the video so the items appear at the top on the video.

Is it just me, or has watching vids on YouTube become a real faff recently?

A few weeks back I’d tap the video once anywhere on the playing area, and it’d bring up the controls to play, pause or scroll. Easy.

Now it doesn’t - it pauses the video on the first tap, so I now have to get my first tap exactly on the bottom centimetre of the screen. But that doesn’t always work, and if I’m a couple of millimetres out and hit the scroll bar, it does that instead and zooms off halfway through the vid.

Scrolling itself is a nightmare - I either end up bringing up the settings, or pausing the video, or nothing.

Sometimes the onscreen controls fade after a few seconds, occasionally they either don’t appear or stay on screen the whole time.

I used to love using the iPad to watch YouTube vids, now it’s just horrible. Can’t work out if this is an iOS/safari thing or YouTube have ‘improved’ their website

I’ve noticed this too. Technology is spoiling my buzz, man.
