a list of battery saving tips for iOS 11:

edited December 2017 in General App Discussion

I though I would gather advice from various threads here, from an internet article or two, and from my own experiences, and post all the tips in one place.

saving battery on ios 11: (optional choices are settngs that will visibly change the way your phone responds and don’t save much battery life)

settings>wi-fi>is now turned off from here, not from the control center
settings>bluetooth>is now turned off from here, not from the control center

settings>cellular or cellular data>wi-fi assist>on (scroll down to find this)
settings>notifications>can be turned off or adjusted for many apps (keep it on for phone, text messages, email)
settings>general>accessibility>display accomodations>auto brightness>off (optional)

settings>general>accessibility>background app refresh>can be turned off for most apps (keep it on for dropbox etc., email, maps, weather)
settings>display and brightness>adjust your brightness level
settings>display and brightness>raise to wake>off (iPhone)

if you don’t use siri: (these features use up a lot of battery power)
settings>siri and search>listen for siri, press home for siri, allow siri when locked, suggestions in search, suggestions in lookup>off, click on every app and turn off “search and siri suggestions” and “show app”

settings>battery>low power mode can be turned on (if other power saving tips aren’t implemented)
settings>battery>battery percentage>on
settings>battery>enable auto-lock>set to a short interval
settings>privacy>location services>set to "while using the app" (weather, maps set to “always”)
settings>privacy>check through app list to see which apps are requesting access
settings>privacy>analytics>share iphone analytics>off
settings>privacy>analytics>share icloud analytics>off
settings>privacy>advertising>limit ad tracking>on
settings>privacy>reset advertising identifier>click to clear
settings>itunes and app store>automatic downloads>off for apps and updates
settings>itunes and app store>in-app ratings and reviews>off
settings>accounts and passwords>fetch new data set to "manually"

also:
settings>camera>formats>set to "most compatible" to shoot jpgs

safari>search>search engine suggestions, safari suggestions, pre-load top hit>off (optional)
safari>general>block pop-ups>on
safari>privacy and security>prevent cross-site tracking, ask websites not to track me, fraudulent website warning>on
safari>privacy and security>camera and microphone access>off
safari>clear history and website data>click this regularly

hold the power button until the “slide to power off” screen appears, let go and hold the home button until the home screen reappears (just a few seconds)

reboot

  • Thanks for that. Checked battery usage and spending roughly the same amount of time on each app today, FM Player used 52% vs. 3% for MicroTERA.

  • Yeah, heck yeah.. Thanks!!

  • Nice work and thanks, but Apple for the love, give us the ability to save these settings in profiles, it's the 21st Century.

  • Wow, just what the doctor ordered.

    They kind of do.
It’s called low power mode and can be added to control centre.
It automatically sets pretty much all of the above on and off with one button.

Thanks, I'll check it out, with every update on iOS lately the settings are altered so going through the process of resetting manually gets irritating. So anything that helps is well helpful.

Nothing here on Pro 10.5, could just be for the iPhone to save battery power.

Ah I’ve just noticed low power mode isn’t available on iPad for some reason. Only iPhone.

    Thanks, I'll note that.

  • Updated with a few more privacy tweaks.

  • Hey, but if you disable share the analytics button then Apple will be in the dark on any issues. For them the creative niche users will have no issues whatsoever!

  • @pfrf didn't see your list before; appreciate your effort.

  • Thank you Johnny!
I've updated my iphone 7 to iOS 11. So far everything is running well, no battery issues. Next I'll update my Air 2, fingers crossed.

  • I've turned on most of these, we'll see how well it does! I was burning through battery on my relatively new iPad 2017 and couldn't figure out why.

  • Is it advisable to use the iPad whilst it’s charging - keeping it at 100%? Does this save the battery or harm it in some way?

  • I do it all the time. I think it not like the old early lithium batteries that needed to be flexed or else.

Any of these device have X amount of full discharge and charge counts.
    Roughly around 1000.
So - keep it charged as much as poss.
My Laptop batteries - same approach, and they stay healthy too.

I've been doing this for years on my iPads and Iphones - batteries are still going strong.
(whereas my partner does not do this and her iPhone batteries deteriorate )

  • If it goes below 100%- to say 98%- before you get it plugged in again- does that still count as a cycle?

    No, it’s cumulative. 2% is 1/50th of a cycle.

  • Thanks- so there is no downside to doing this on a regular basis?

That's the general concensus, but I'm far from a scientific expert on the matter :)

  • I’ve owned 4 iPads and 2 iPhones. Besides very obvious things (like forgetting the gps app that is actively running in your pocket) and some automated stuff (like background activity for certain apps), just use the iPad without thinking about how or when to charge it. Besides keeping the battery in somewhat normal temperatures (don’t leave it in a hot car, keep it out of direct sun light when u be working the tan on ur beer belly), there’s really not much one can do to keep the battery in shape longer. Heat will permanently destroy the battery, but not necessarily all of it. Cold temps will also have an adverse effect on the battery, but it won’t get any permanent damages from it.

Basically, stop thinking about the battery and it’ll last longer, is my experience:-)
