Black Friday Etude: A 42-second demo track
Here is a quickie clip made up of ONLY new apps that I picked up on Black Friday.
Backstory:
I picked up a variety of both iOS and desktop apps on Black Friday, including: Neo Soul Keys Studio, Embertone Sensual Sax, Waves Bass Slapper, Addictive Drums 2 Custom, and AIR Music Technology’s Hybrid 3 (which could be had for the Black Friday madness price of only $1).
I started to explore the thousands of presets in Hybrid 3, and quickly hit upon one that generated an idea. From there I added Neo Soul Keys, Bass Slapper, Addictive Drums, Sensual Sax, and some more Hybrid.
This was basically a study to learn my way around these new apps, but thought I’d share the result, FWIW. Enjoy!

I have no problem with anyone posting their music, and I'm not trying to be the forum police, but would you do some of us the kindness and cluing us in via thread title or category as to what we'll be getting by clicking through?
BTW, glad you're finding Hybrid inspiring. I've had it for a couple of years, and like it a lot.
Hmm. Not sure I totally feel you on this, but ...
Does that help?
Hybrid 3 — not really sure what it is about yet, but certainly worth $1. The other apps used were probably more inspiring, but Hybrid did provide the initial spark. I just thought people might be interested in the order in which the tracks were laid down.
Wonderfully groovy track, nicely done!
@Lady_App_titude YOU ARE GEORGE BENSON AND I CLAIM MY FIVE POUNDS!
Toe tapping goodness!
Thanks, Keenan!
Yea, groovy - that's what it is.
Nicely done
Lady — I thought I was on the beach for 42 Seconds. More please!!!
And yeah, it should be under the “Creations” folder because we’re all totally ADSR around here, no I mean ADHD, or something like that.
Haha! Thanks! But with no guitar I’m thinking it’s more like ersatz Ronnie Laws or Grover Washington or something.
I will say that Sensual Sax is a beast to tame. Took every trick in the book to coax out something useable, even with a passage this short.
In fairness to me, I requested "or." The original thread title was just "Black Friday Etude," which I thought was going to be a thread about people feeling entitled to cheap apps or something.
Yeah Grover Jr for sure, but the satin-shirt-balmy-breezy-Saturday-night-and-look-here's-my-special-pink-car is pure George...of course he does have seven children so I hope he's still breezin'.....
Gotcha, and you’re right...still I thought I made a good joke there, and it was accidental, I tried to type ADD but it first come out as ADSR...
:-)
No worries, mate. I've "released" it, and let it go. Onto the next transient...
Nicely done!
Ha! That is SO funny. And here I thought I could not have been more descriptive. An etude is a study, a piece of music written for some didactic purpose. This is literally a piece of music written as a study of apps bought on Black Friday.
But I like your concept of an “e-tude” — like people coppin’ ‘tudes about E-commerce.
I’m just glad I didn’t call it a nocturne or a pastorale. “Buncha privileged bargain-hunters who think that they’re entitled to a free ‘pass for all’, sheesh!” :-s
Sounds great; love that slap bass. Groovy.
Thanks so much!
Yes, Waves Bass Slapper is brilliant! Unfortunately, it’s strictly slap and pull. No regular picked or fingered bass. I imagine that could be coming in a future instrument. But for slap bass, definitely one of the best I’ve tried. And I believe you can still grab it on sale.
Thx, Toz! You know how many times do we buy these apps and then half of them end up unused and forgotten... Sometimes it’s because there is a learning curve. I wanted to force myself to dig into these apps, several of which took some effort to grok. So I tried to focus mostly on the apps and their features, keeping the music as brief as possible.
I was hoping this might inspire others ... What apps did you guys pick up on black/cyber week? How much use are you getting out of them? Maybe put together a 1-min example using only new apps you bought on Black Friday. It’s a great way to force yourself to maximize your investment and jump start ideas!
She's right.
I'd like to see more of this, too.
As for me, I mainly purchased FX on Black Friday. The list includes:
Audio Damage FX
AudioEffX
BIAS FX
Brusfri
Cubasis 2 FX2
Shaper
I doubt anyone is interested in an effects demo, but I'm open to it, and willing to take requests.
Oh boy, I’m almost ashamed to admit but...no new apps! I did get a couple of IAPs for iSymphonic though.
@Lady_App_titude This sounds great. May I ask how you played / sequenced the saxaphone part?
Embertone Sensual Saxophone, which is a brilliant app.
It has this “Sensuality” feature, which adds little bends and slurs. But it’s somewhat unpredictable and really is better suited to slower music, so it was a bit of a struggle to make work on this kind of piece.
I used to play saxophone and have a natural tendency to compose melodies by spontaneous improvisation. This app tends to have a mind of its own that doesn’t always easily let you instantly play what your inner ear is telling you. So this had to be assembled in pieces with a lot of switching between articulations and turning things on and off ... staccato, legato, pitch bend ... pretty much every trick I could throw at it. The “sensuality “ seems to round robin between various phrases, so at one point I had to record 3 takes of the same sequence and then take the best of each, phrase by phrase, comped together. Not a very satisfying process, but pretty satisfying results in the end. Maybe it gets easier with more practice.
Moving this to the Creations forum, @Lady_App_titude
So good, @Lady_App_titude
Obrigado, senhorlampada.
Enjoyed this a lot! Very good and funky! Brava!
Thank you, @theconnactic!
I realize I have so many apps I've never used. (For example, I haven't spent more than a few minutes with Moog Model 15, which I bought months ago! Dozens of other examples.) I should force myself to do a short 1-min. track with every app I've neglected!
Nice to hear about this through SonicTalk.
