BM3 tutorial question [SOLVED - user idiocy]
Hi,
in the tutorial videos at:
https://intua.net/forums/discussion/5868/using-au-midi-videos-11-12-17
Ole @5pinlink sets out how to trigger a synth Poison from the Rozetta Bassline MIDI plugin in Beatmaker 3.
I get as far as the bit where the pads are assigned (watching at .25 playback speed) but on trying to set the MIDI input for the synth (I'm using Zeeon because I don't have Poison) the video has Rozetta Bassline as a MIDI input option. On mine it only has the generic inputs.
Any idea what I am doing wrong, is there some arcane chant that I have to perform first?
Comments
Can you show some screen shots as I can get baseline to Zeeon ok
Also I would recommend using a separate bank for the baseline to be honest. I’ve had far less trouble setting things up this way
Are you on iOS11 ?
So, follow the first video at the link above. When I go into MIDI Setup >> MINI Input, port it shows options as in the attached pic.
On the video, the Rozeta plugin is in that list.
Yup 11.0
I usually do it by doing a long-press on the B1 (in this example) bank tab - and select the MIDI Input Port from there.
I guess it is too early for me.
With no words, I am looking at things and wondering myself what exactly I am looking at and why.
I wish someone verbally explained things those vids because they look like they provide some good info.
Just don't have patience at this point to figure out what I am looking at during each moment. (hint)
I listen and read directions well, watching is sort of my least favorite way. I actually will listen to most "tutorial" vids and that is all. Just glancing to see what they explained. That is my process anyway for learning.
Gonna have to watch these a few more times.
What is going on?
He is loading the AU Sequencing app in 1 pad per app it will trigger.
So, for 2 diff apps being triggered by 2 diff versions of Odessa - that would be 4 pads total used?
Is there a grid / piano roll per pad as well?
This whole thing looks super valuable hopefully someone will do an in depth tutorial explaining the reasoning a little more. Otherwise, mimicking the video will work but understanding the whys and whats more will really enlighten me on to best use the process.
Ok, so I tried with Rozetta on the first bank, Zeeon on the second, long press on the B1, click on port and I get the same options , and Network Session 1.
There must be something else I need to do?
Are you sure you have updated BM3 to the latest version? I don't need to do anything else...
I am getting the options. I know it a pain, but try deleting the bank and start again.
I had the same problem until I realized I hadn't updated BM3!
Yep, that was it. Update wasn't showing in my App Store despite several visits. Thanks All!
Here’s mine I’m receiving the midi on two synths

Go directly to jail, do not pass go, do not collect £200

Since the app store and updates issues have been happening, I now refresh the updates list (drag down) whenever I visit
Lol it’s always something mind bendingly simple and annoying
Thanks @AndyPlankton @Fruitbat1919
I would purchase your apps as a thank you. But I don't think you have any so I'm off to the store to buy something else from @brambos
I have to now open apps that have new updates available first, then go back to the Store and refresh my update list and a whole bunch then turn up. If I don't open the app first then the refresh does nothing.
None of my updates appear automatically now, they all have to be dug out manually like this.
Good to know, well in the sense that this may be necessary, not from the point of view that it is needed in the first place.
Cheers Fella
Well @brambos did ultimately ask the vital question
Yeah I tried running a couple of Brambos AU's in a single bank last night, but I don't think it can be done (at least I don't think so) as the bank uses the overall MIDI settings.
I think that's where changing the MIDI in port for the pad comes in. Was able to run Bassline, Particles and two Zeeons in the same bank now that it is working.
Yeah it works, but I’ve found it far more reliable keeping them separate and if you want to record them to a midi track later, it makes more sense. I keep them as separate, then record what I’ve done. Then disable the AU Midi ones I’ve recorded.
Not sure I’m explaining it well, but having them all on separate banks is just so much easier IMO.
No @Fruitbat1919 that makes perfect sense. I have only just got this working for me so am open to any hints and tips that might make progress smoother.
Using banks is what is causing most of my grief with the MIDI input from external devices....bank per sample was the recommendation I was given for the same reasons....it works and having track per sample, which kinda takes away the benefit of having banks in the first place.
Yeah, it does to some degree, but using each bank as a kind of multisampled instrument works well enough. I wouldn’t use any multiples in one bank that need separate midi channels though. Not saying it can’t be done, it’s just not wise to overly complicate matters with this already complex seeming midi system
I'm sure there is a simple key to unlock this seemingly difficult grasp.
The only time you need to worry about working in one bank is when you want to trigger multiple pads from the AU MIDI, with Rozeta that would be XOX or Rhythm.
This is because there is no MIDI filter in Beatmaker and no option to send each hit per channel in XOX or Rhythm.
When XOX or Rhythm are sending all their notes out to MIDI channel 10, any pad you send it to will play all those notes (No MIDI filtering)
If this is a sampler, then it will transpose each hit loaded in to that sampler, unless the sample is mapped only to that key.
If it is a drum plugin and there is a template from Brambos for that drum plugin, it may well not matter at all.
If you look at the AU MIDI videos linked above
AU MIDI to Pad (Drumkit) shows this sample mapping as MIDI filtering technique.
Note that in that video he maps all the samples on one pad, you do not need to do this, and i will ask him to do an extra video to cover that.
Sending XOX and Rhythm to a second bank bypasses the need to map the samples per key, because you can set the bank itself to be MIDI note to same numbered pad (Single channel mode)
AU MIDI to Bank (Drumkit) shows this technique.
Both techniques are applicable to XOX and Rhythm.
It is also handy to use Rozeta to a second bank for layering up synths and having them all bussed to the bank outs too, very powerful set up.
(I would love to say that i just knew all that, but Win was sat here next to me and gave me this info
)
Here's a question that's [NOT SOLVED] for me, but is certainly user idiocy. Haven't tried before to import a midi file into BM3. Am on a track and in the piano roll (where I can nicely play in notes etc, all good), but how/where can I import an existing midi file. I HAVE got it IN the program, it's in the 'imports' as it's supposed to be, but how do I get it into a track OR import/open a track with it in it? Forgive my simplicity, haven't tried it before, but am attempting to make something non-dancey etc and would really like to use this file I developed elsewhere....
Thanks.
You can drag the midi-file to a bank track on the time-line.
Each midi-channel in the file will end up on a separate pad so you can easily assign sounds to them.
Thank you Samu-san. I will invest some of my Sunday afternoon trying this
